    • It takes two to tango. If the tribes didn't want to be filmed they could have stopped them. In many ways they brought it on themselves. Quite right the film crew should deny any responsibility. And anyway, if you look at the science, it should infact be the other way round. The western world is so fragile when it comes to health and disease that any contact with foreign bacteria or virus' and we've the sweats and runs for days. We're too clean. Ironic, that our pill for every ill mentality makes us more prone to catching something.

But maybe I'm wrong, maybe it's true that a London based film crew were the carriers of a deadly and fatal flu strain that managed to travel half way round the world before infecting anyone else. Yeah....maybe....Better watch out when they come home...ooooooo.

    • unfortunately , it's too easy for a well financed co. to do this kinda thing - the tragedy is that most peeps don't realize how easy it is .

    • It's fascinating that this type of thing is still happening. Tragic though. Seems like it might've been really simple to avoid.

    • yay ! the world will soon be homogenized - pretty soon there'll be pizza huts in the amazon , but only the loggers will be able to afford to eat there , while the former natives will be alcoholics stumbling around dumpster diving - yeah , i agree , just quit fighting for the rights of anyone , just let all of the human race be swallowed up by the "modernity" the global corporations want us to have - just let the "cohesive whole" unite us all in mutual spiritual deadness - yeah , why care - "modernize or die" - get "educated" so that you too can join the rest of humanity in it's quest to participate more fully in the wonderful thing which is the "global economy" - all of us people who have it in our power to advocate for the integrity of indigenous cultures ( and by their request ) should just get real jobs , like selling pharmaceuticals to disease ridden tribes . all indigenous peoples should have gov't subsidies to build casinos on their land ( if they can afford to hire lawyers willing to get their land back ) , that would be progress . yup- i'm sure the indiginies would want that , rather than subsisting on selling their native crafts while wandering around naked in the wilderness . the first thing i'm gonna do when i get stinking rich is go down to panama and take a few noble savages onboard my interplanetary spaceship and maybe we'll be lucky enough to get a good view of a paved over planet lit up by billboards - maybe we'll even colonize a new planet and start a braver , newer world .

    • This world is becoming a cohesive whole. Sooner or later these people were going to be reached by modernity, sadly a part of that is conditioning the autoimmune system to the rest of society.

We're heading into a near future of biological engineering, interplanetary travel, and flying cars. If the tribesmen are just left in the jungle un-touched in the name of 'allowing them to preserve their way of life' a greater injustice will take place, they wont be able to enjoy the beauty of education and the ability to be a part of the greater world around them. It is possible to modernize and hold onto your cultural identity.

    • we're talking about a TV show mate - not a proper field study conducted by anthropologists , or ethnographers , whom are usually sponsored by reputable academic or government institutions and take every precaution to prevent the spread of anything contagious , and practice real "documentation" - this show was created to make money - and that's it - it's "reality TV" , complete with commercials . additionally , this is not the only show on presently which exploits indigenous peoples with the formula of putting a couple of white blokes in the company of what the TV audience is supposed to think are amusing , backwards "primitives" , and see what hilarity ensues - it's deplorable - and if you had read the story you'd have noticed that an actual anthropologist ( if you're not sure of what an "anthropologist" is , wiki it ) warned the producers - the company is guilty of manslaughter , or negligent homicide - and this tribe wouldn't be needing "modern medicine " if the idiots involved in making this show didn't visit them in the first place .

    • im pretty sure they are not trying to make a quick buck, by interviewing and documenting them, its a good thing they are going to these tribes and documenting the only living versions of our cultures past. As for the diseases, are they to blame? DId they intentionally bring these diseases? ofcourse not, and modern medicine i do believe blows away 400 year old CC meds.

    • If you want to vilify anyone, get your history straight. These foolanos ain't got nada on Christopher Columbus - plus he wound up getting his own share of diseases back for all his disgusting behavior.

Regardless, neither he nor these tribesman can compare to the Native American Indian communities that were affected by the intentional spread of measles (by US soldiers) during America's western expansion.

If you are going to compare this behavior to anything compare it to the genocidal actions of our own government, and not some blown-up doll of a folk hero (that didn't even really discover anything ...)

    • I believe that Cicada Films is claiming the outbreak occurred in an area that they did not visit. Of course, someone they had contact with could have traveled there and spread the virus.

      It's just a shame.

Unlike the Europeans of past that intentionally spread disease to wipe out native populations, I think it is very unfair to compare this group of people to those genocidal events. There may have been carelessness involved here, but I doubt there was malicious intent.

    • Opinion; Civilization creates the ideas of corruption being organized. Have you ever seen a happy person that is honest and not showing a "FRONT". A fake expression, a sale call, a selfish behavior, lying to everyone and not true to them self.

Civilization has educated me to recognize this.

    • People don't think of prevention. Only to put a band aid to a permanent problem. Drugs from the pharmacies that get a permanent income, forever. RENT money!

    • Kinda sad that the production team were allegedly warned about such dangers before they embarked on their journey, but still proceeded...

    • yeah , the second season will involve missionaries coming in and providing basic health services in exchange for the eradication of these peeps' indigenous culture , and the audience will sit back and feel relieved that the genocide they helped create at least resulted in the salvation of the souls of those left standing .

    • It is said that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it- unfortunately this is all too true. We have been in situations like this too many times. TV shows like this feel that while they are making a cheap buck in a third world country, they are doing these people a service by bring international attention to the plight of the country they are in. If this is a true ( which I doubt) you should have at least equal concern for what your impact will have on the ecosystem where you are going. Why is it we are so concerned and get shots before we travel? Does no one think that people in other countries might need vaccinations against us? No... that would imply that we really care about people and not just money.

    • This is unfortunate, if true. But, I would be amazed if this tribe has been so absolutely isolated that Western diseases had not already decimated their numbers centuries ago like just about every other tribe in the hemisphere, especially if they had been in contact with the Incas.

    • i love small pox jokes, but its been a while since i heard a good one!

but seriously it takes a true master to understand their undeniable connection to the rest of the world without having to actually travel & pillage it...maybe the cicada people need to read the tao te ching instead of [inadvertently] killing their subjects...

way to keep that accidental oppression goin'!

[i think i need to lay off the irony pills i've been taking]

    • To quote Pink Flloyd "Hey! Leave those kids alone!"

I admit I watched a couple of these shows and wondered the same thing myself - what if the crew did to them what the Spanish did when they "Disocovered" the 'new world'.
