Bud Browne, who pioneered the surf film genre in the 1950s, has passed away at his home in San Luis Obispo, California. He was 96.

Bud and his 16mm camera captured a simpler and beautiful era of surfing, and will always be remembered.

    • One of the greatest things about the sport of surfing is that you need only three things: your body, a surf-board, and a wave.

Well in Bud's case it was often a camera. Here's to a true pioneer and an icon! May he rest in peace. And may his family and friends find closure in his passing.

    • How many other directors and surfers did Bud Browne inspire?

We can thank him for putting a positive spin on our culture.

    • I remember when "The Endless Summer" came out I always loved that movie. I'm surprised you didn't include that one.

It was one of the things that inspired me to learn to surf when Iived in Santa Cruz

Well "Endless Summer" was directed by Bruce Brown, no relation to Bud. He was definitely inspired by Bud though, and I think he contributed some footage to "Endless Summer."
