Vatican forgives John Lennon

Image
ashcatash
A Vatican newspaper has forgiven the late English singer John Lennon for saying four decades ago that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus.

In an article praising The Beatles, L'Osservatore Romano said Lennon had just been showing off.

Lennon told a British newspaper in 1966 - at the height of Beatlemania - that he did not know which would die out first, Christianity or rock and roll.

At the time, the comparison sparked controversy in the US.

The semi-official Vatican newspaper marked the 40th anniversary of The Beatles' "White Album" with an article praising Lennon and the Fab Four from Liverpool.

The paper dismissed Lennon's much-criticised remark that the Beatles were more famous than Jesus Christ as a youthful joke.

The paper described the remark as "showing off, bragging by a young English working-class musician who had grown up in the age of Elvis Presley and rock and roll and had enjoyed unexpected success".

L'Osservatore Romano recently got a new editor and now - apart from chronicling the Pope's daily doings and printing the texts of papal speeches - it sometimes runs articles on entertainment on inside pages, together with extensive reporting on world affairs.

In a half-page illustrated article, the paper praised The Beatles for what it called their "unique and strange alchemy of sounds and words".

The newspaper said The Beatles's songs had shown an extraordinary capacity for survival and the White Album album remained a "magical musical anthology".

In another article on the same page entitled "Twilight of the gods" the newspaper lamented the passing of the golden days of Hollywood and said the mysterious fascination of the star system of Hollywood in the 1950s had been superseded by the cult of so-called celebrities.

Although Pope Benedict has criticised many aspects of modern pop culture, he now allows the newspaper of the tiny independent Vatican state to reflect the reality of the world outside in a way that would have been unthinkable in the days of Pope Paul VI who reigned during heyday of The Beatles.

    • What I noticed: FOUR DECADES?! The chain of events here went something like this, he said it, people got upset, people got over it, people forgot it, he died, people were sad, people got over it, he's forgiven by Pope. >_>'

    • i'm sure if john lennon was alive, he would have more important things to worry about, than what the pope thinks of him. aren't we suppost to seek forgiveness from our god, not some guy in a dress?

    • Really? To my knowledge, and within the context of the statement in question being so clear, other than the fact that I can't seem to sleep at the moment, this is such a non-issue, it deserves its own category. Perhaps Mr. Lennon is the Vaticans contemporary lazarus brought back from the dead so as to demonstrate just how much forgiveness can be resurected after forty years of contemplative reflection. Does this really mean anything at all, and why now?

    • Tell the Pope to sell all the jewels, live in a humble house like Mother Teresa, get rid of all the servants, give away his "more money than God", and then we can take what he says seriously.

exactly . the vatican appears to have shown some kind of vague generosity that you can't quite pin down exactly , and at first you're inclined to think "well, i may not even like the pope ( etc. ) but this sounds like a nice gesture anyhow " . propaganda is fun .

    • John Lennon never once needed forgiveness from the catholics....nor does he need it now.
He lived an uncompromising life with fantastic ideals...
I have more respect for John than any pope!

How many years did it take for them to follow those simple tenants...?

Nice to hear in any case, though.

    • John Lennon needs no forgiveness. The catholic church is a foul, corrupt body led by a former member of the HItler Youth. Lennon would mock such forgiveness. As for god - god is a concept by which we measure our pain.

    • Dear Pope in ivory tower - Thanks for pointing out the obvious 40 years later when an innocent comment was taken out of context by bible thumpers several months after the actual interview. It's no wonder The Beatles never toured again after this debacle resulted in death threats & exactly the bullshit that took the fun out of it, while your sick priests were busy molesting children & then hiding behind any story that challenged the almighty church.

Putting 40+ years in perspective for you, The Beatles ARE more popular than Jesus as their popularity continues to grow with each new generation, selling more albums than you have sheep in your flock, while bringing more people across the world together with their simple message of peace & love after only 8 short years of recording some wonderful music together.

But I guess you'd be out of the salvation selling business if you stopped preaching that your god is the only one or the best one, continuing to divide people further by demanding blind faith - & money - for over 2000 years, if you haven’t closed their church, sold off the assets & kept the proceeds. Remember, ”Religion is but one tree with many branches” ~ Mahatma Gandhi.

    • Under the churches ideals, Lennon should have been canonized for ushering in an era of free unprotected sex. On a side note, you also you gotta love the churches new version of Entertainment Tonight. I wonder if this vicious media source would grill Palin.

    • The way I look at the Vatican & Co', is they're just a cult of schitzo's, wearing dresses like a Molly, playing at being the middleman, or rather, Whore of Babylon, Hekah in a white virgin's dress between man and his conscience, doing deal's with every corrupted organisation that can afford a couple of nuke's or a hit man, and has a relatively large public database so that they can keep whitewashing their record's like they've been doing for the past 700 year's, invest publically dontated fund's into scientific research because they havn't got any Natural Faith of their own and have to use Science to fake it just like NASA, they've been involved in murder, rape, abuse's you wouldn't even have the gut's to swallow, are involved in missing children all over the world, and come only second to China in that league of abuse's, and yet no one's got the bollock's to put them in the severe psychiatric ward for Muchausen by Proxy, have such a severe case of a cracked up Psychotic impaired psyche, that all their religion just come's down to at the end of the day is Posession, and that's not religion to me, unless it's posession of your own Soul, because you can't steal anyone else's unless your physically dead yourself, so wtf is the Vatican doing operating their Schitzo psychotic dysfunctional super dick-id's operating in Public for anyway? Because they certainly don't have the intelligence to know their own conscience's, let alone everyone else's, and don't we shoot rabid dog's that bit children in an adult intelligent society anyway!

How many people here can associate themselve's with this much Vatican hipocritcrasy, because look what happend's every time the pot call's the kettle black!

    • How many remarks have any of us ever said that, taken out of context would look really bad.
As for John Lennon, he was a helluva an artist.
I doubt he paid much attention to the Vatican, who is steeped in centuries of dogma.

    • The amazing thing is that the Catholic church thinks that what John Lennon said needs to be forgiven. Old white men sitting around all day in robes, acting out their perceived supremacy/divinity will never cease to amaze me.

    • The comment oh soooo long ago was not meant to be forgiven. It was a comment, sarcastic, maybe taken out of context and just a comment. Alas, the Vatican did make a big deal out of this, and so Beatle Albums were being bulldozed and broken and burned by people; ahm, lemmings who
I guess really did not appreciate the music.
I’m guessing the Vatican “The Roman Catholic Church” wants back in. And what better way to do that is to dig deep into their robes and pull out the baby boomer generation card along with what they can find being contraversional that will not respond back and make good.
Guess what? It’s a new world and even though I would love to hear what John Lennon’s remark would be on this issue now, a whole generation (the ones who saved their records from the burn pile, because we had to use our allowance to by them) and more, can respond back!
Individually, on the web, on TV, anywhere and amazingly enough we can also listen too.
The Beatles music is and always will be classic and grows with time, gathering new listeners every day and maybe somehow the Vatican need to send out new messages and make up for their bad ones.
Hopefully, there are “positive changes” coming. Imagine

    • The Vatican still doesn't understand. He wasn't "showing off" he was simply saying wow millions are buying our albums while jesus is pretty much ignored. And thank god people were smart enough to listen to the beatles instead of believe in god. "Youthful joke"? The Vatican is a joke.

I'm with Motown too. Religion, as a whole seems to create more problems than it solves. Learn that we are all ONE and treat each other accordingly and peace will be not only a possibility, but a way of life. Amen!

Hey while everyone insults the catholic church lets all not forget that John Lennon was a horrible husband and father, forcing his first wife into drugs, berating/ignoring his first son and eventually cheating on his first wife with Yoko Ono which afterward he continued to berate his first son and wife until he effectively abandoned both of them.
Good songwriter who never rarely lived what he preached.

      but hey....imagine.

I would like to know where you get your facts from. John Lennon was not a perfect man, but in musical terms, he was a genius. In terms of knowledge and world issues he was very involved in a positive way. Did I mention he was also way smarter than you will ever be?

    • Years ago I saw the a clip of the comment he made. For the record it was said in an ironic manner. It was as if he himseff was chargrined over all the hype that surrounded the Beatles.

I'm sure John, wherever he is, has also found it in his heart to forgive the church for centuries of bigotry and hate.

Imagine if John Lennon has been sitting in heaven for these last 28 years. Wouldn’t that be a kick? He’s in heaven and the Vatican finally gives him their required forgiveness to make it legal.

John’s comment, regardless of his intent, probably had little or no significance as to his entrance through the “Pearly Gates.” I doubt God or Jesus took any great offense with regards to his comment. Even if they did, 28 years is a long time for either of them to hold a grudge for something so simple and harmless.

I believe John Lennon’s messages such as those in his song “Imagine” probably packs more weight with them! It actually sounds so much like the message of Jesus:
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEOkxRLzBf0

Organized religions as a rule tend to create just the opposite. They quite often create things such as division, racism, bigotry and any other little hate based differences they can find. John Lennon stood for none of these.
I wonder if making it to heaven requires any religious group’s forgiveness. Do they really have that power? I wonder. What if it is determined more on an individual basis between self and Maker.

What if God doesn’t acknowledge any religious group as having the empowerment to act in his name? I wonder how many millions of people are yet to be forgiven as God and Jesus continue to wait. Just imagine how much power religious groups actually have in this process.

How long must they wait so they can be granted passage to heaven? Good thing God and Jesus are so patient. Don’t you agree?

    • Yes maybe his comments were a little insensitive but you can't fool statistics. If more people say they like the Beatles than willingly go to church, and several polls support it, then that's science. Fact. Whether you like the result or not.

I have a feeling the Roman Catholic church is in for many positive changes. With it being such a broad sweeping church, this is revolutionary! He really does have an open mind about things that we face today, unlike popes before that were shielded from life due to their priestly duties.

      Go Pope Benedict!
