    • The concept of a multiverse was a mainstay of DC Comics since 1961 and was used to account for the differences between several of the "Silver Age" superheroes like Green Lantern, Flash, and the Atom from their "Golden Age" counterparts from the 30's and 40's. (Note: the first use of the multiverse was Wonder Woman #59 in 1953 but it wasn't used as regular concept until "The Flash of Two Worlds".)

DC Comics has tried several times to eliminate the Multiverse. The first time was "Crisis on Infinite Earths". The second was "Zero Hour". Unfortunately they continued to develop alternate universe stories for their mainstay characters ("Dark Knight Returns", "Superman - Red Son", and "Kingdom Come") and then justified their storylines as being part of "Elseworlds" or "Hypertime". Then they bought out Wildstorm Comics and they incorporated their multiverse ("The Bleed") into the mix.

Yes it is confusing. And some folks are hoping that "Final Crisis" will end it once and for all... but I seriously have my doubts.

Oh, and, yes, somewhere along the mess of "Infinite Crisis" were worlds for TV heroes and movies. One of them was Earth-462, home of the "Wonder Woman" TV series.

I hate this stuff. I liked Elseworlds, and it was just that, a fantasy outside of the "regular" realm. It had no bearing on anything. Even LOTDK was usually recognized as "outside" of the regular Batman / Detective Comics "world", and it was fine, just like the movies, and the animated series. No one had to say it was another Earth or whatever that had to have a crisis with this one.

    • why does it have to be multi universe? thats ridiculous, is it so hard for people to concieve of multiple takes on one story? I really doubt that dc themselves ever claimed of any multi universe crap. There are 2 different takes on batman in cinema, are you going to tie that together with some lame multi universe theory bs too? shut up.

    • Superheros never die.

As others pointed out, DC has a multiverse thing going on that allows them to do whatever they want without having to stick to one storyline. Marvel does that too. That way comic writers have the freedom to do what they want with the characters without it all of the other comics.

    • It's really Earth 51 and 3/4ths, the universe that was supposed to be and then got reset and then restarted... it's otherwise known as Morrisonverse, and it was created just for Bat-Mite so he could help out his favorite comic book character.

Don't worry, if you don't like it DC can always have the pre-Crisis Superboy of Earth-Prime punch the walls of reality again and everything will change.

Oh, and it should be pointed out that THIS is really not the END of Batman. That gets played out in the pages of "Final Crisis".

    • Technically this batman is from another dimension, and the first batman actually died back in the 1950s and this Bruce Wayne came to our universe to take his place.
When i finished this issue I was really confused, and nothing has changed yet. I don't think he is dead though.

    • They kill off major superheroes quite often, only to have them pop up again in the real dimension - oh wait, yeah, that was a parallel dimension he died in, didn't you know?

Buy those issues! Bite your nails!

    • Like I said on another Current post about this:

All I can say is that if he really does die in the comic world then I hope he really does. I get so confused with ElseWorld and World 2. I hope to enjoy Batman regardless. I wonder which Robin does battle it out. Not sure if I see Tim Drake capable of being a traitor.

    • I think the missing body allows DC comics to bring him back at a later time.

i believe he will come back a darker batman. without the limitations that bruce wayne was imposing.

Batman a full time Dark Knight

    • It seems that the fact that Bruce Wayne's body 'disappears' rather than is found dead leaves the door open for him to return in future... maybe not as Batman though?
