MTV plan 'Generation Obama' reality shows

MTV have seen a 23% fourth-quarter drop in their core demo of 12- to 34-year-olds and they need something to boost their ratings. Instead of playing more music, MTV have decided to funnel their money into the creation of 16 new reality shows.

I guess reality shows got a bad name for themselves as they began to self parody, exploiting the weaker part of a person's character for the enjoyment of humankind's underlying enjoyment of social sadism seemed to be a working format. The new shows that MTV have planned are going to be different, so they say.

"Our new shows will feature themes of affirmation and accomplishment," says Brian Graden, prez of entertainment at MTV Networks music channels and president of Logo. "Our shows are going to focus less on loud and silly hooks and more on young people proving themselves. These are themes that are consistent with the Obama generation."

I like the idea that the "generation" of a president can determine the direction of television. Whereas the Bush years of reality TV shows will be remembered for their ruthlessness, cynicism and exploitation, maybe the Obama generation reality shows will have tag lines like, "You have $10,000 and three weeks to solve the world energy crisis ... can you and your pals do it?"

Life reflecting art or art reflecting life, the debate continues.
