Taken from Jordan Brown's review at www.moviemuser.co.uk:
Unfortunately, while the movie plays out as a consistently entertaining vehicle that allows the lead to once again showcase his charm and ability, it frequently feels as though the hugely fascinating narrative is put on the back burner. It’s a situation that’s exacerbated by the fact that, despite the entire movie following a Nazi plot to kill Hitler, the conspirators aren’t even covering up the English dialogue with a German accent. As such, the whole thing loses the natural resonance that would come from a tale of good-guy Nazis. Instead it ends up as a bog standard Allied-versus-Axis espionage thriller that we’ve all seen a thousand times before. And with Singer so blatantly gearing the film towards the masses, it ends up reeking of a missed opportunity. However, if you have enough heart to forgive those major flaws, then you’ll be enjoy one of the most fun and engaging war films of the past few years. Racing along at breakneck speed, the film keeps you teetering on the edge of your sofa thanks to the dazzling visual spectacle and John Ottman’s haunting score.

MovieMuser:
I didn't make any mention of John Ottoman in my review, which is shocking, but I have to disagree with you about actors adopting accent.
I think many movies have been horribly tainted by talent throwing around inconsistent, or grating dialects- Daniel Craig in Defiance being a recent example. On the flip side Amadeus would have been rendered unwatchable if every actor had been throwing round german and Italian accents.
I feel the film is fast paced and absorbing enough and the fact that it is largely a 'ripping yarn', as opposed to a gritty drama, puts pay to the need for them.

It's a tough trick, when even the least erudite knowledge of WWII history should leave little surprise in the ending, but thanks to the skilled hand of Christopher McQuarrie (of Usual Suspects fame!), the elephant in the room is put to task, maintaining a razor sharp pace- as the hatched plot of this skillful supporting cast (Nighy, Branagh, Terence Stamp- Eddie Izzard??) falls apart step by step, the tempo rises ever higher, leading to an awesomely explosive conclusion.
Brian Singer’s direction follows the pace and tension of the storyline fantastically, with a wonderfully golden age stage quality.
But inevitably Cruise is the real star here emulating the tired-of-war-Colonel with huge professionalism; a jaw-jutting man of action, desperate to put things right. A fitting character for a star gone wrong, trying to set his career back on the right path.
All in all, a rip roaring storyline, with high drama, a great cast and bags of tension.

I'm still deciding if I want to watch this one.
Before watching the trailer, I hadn't heard much about it, other than it is a film based on the war.
These kind of films don't fill me with excitement and the only other film I've seen in the same genre is Pearl Harbour (and that was only really because Ben Affleck and Josh Hartnett are swoon-some).However, since watching the trailer I have changed my mind. The creative special effects, cleverly written plots and explosive soundtrack combine together to keep the viewer entertained.
Tom Cruise might have aged slightly since his earlier appearances in Top Gun and Cocktail, but he still has something about him that resembles Marmite. You either love him or you hate him.
I'm still to decide on this, so Valkyrie might help me! - 3 years ago

This is clearly not a timeless movie, its not going to go down as one of the best war movies ever, which is a shame because it could have done. However I did think movie was really good. I'm not usually a fan of war movies and I have to say the only reason I watched it was because I really liked the poster. Strange reason to watch a movie, i know. Luckily, despite being set in Germany no one has to try and pull off a German accent, this could have been catastrophic with it being an English American cast. What I think the movie is good at is pulling you in. Once they start planning the assassination attempt you really want to know if they will do it. The film is also brilliant at building tension, the film is full of corruption and treason, which gives huge opportunities for people to get caught or discovered and the film exploits this brilliantly. Where I would say the film falls short is the start and the end. It can in places be a little slow and I think goes on 10 minutes too long. I didn't know any of the historical background to this film before I watched it and went into it open minded and really enjoyed it. Defiantly worth the 2 hours.

I enjoyed this film even though i would have liked a bit more action in it. Tom cruise played his role really well and fiited well into the film. The story was great and really interesting. It combined action and history together which made it really enjoyable. 4/5

When they started promoting this film in the UK, the BBC aired a documentary about the few crucial hours in which Stauffenberg attempted to take Hitler and his friendly friends out. I don’t know if my history teacher covered this back in high school. If so, I must have been fast asleep. There are many suspenseful WW2 tales, this sure is the remarkable one I have ever heard. The idea of using an army that Hitler himself created to assassinate him fascinates me.
With a storyline of this calibre, it’s pretty hard for a director to f*ck it up. We know all along that Stauffenberg did not actually kill Hitler, but Singer opts to frame Valkyrie as a high concept wartime suspense thriller, inviting us to suspend our disbelief and go along for the ride – and that’s the bit I really enjoyed. In my opinion the film failed for the simple reason English the actors delivered their cringeworthy lines in English accents. The villainous Nazi is portrayed by a German actor who speaks English in a German accent. And then there’s Cruise himself, dishing his lines out in pureblood American. Many shithouse Hollywood films suffer the same fate and the only obvious answer to this is cast German actors to play German characters, subtitle it and bite the bullet when it comes to distribution (imagine mentioning that to the studio fat cats). Sh*thouse Hollywood can still get involved in the production, funding and execution. Look at ‘The Lives of Others’ for example, this was a joint effort from both sides of the pond and managed to sweep a number of awards and still make a huge amount of money.
Hitler one, Tom Cruise nil.

On paper Valkyrie looks awesome; The true story its based on for a start is compelling, the director has proved he is solid and the cast are amazing (apart from Cruise who makes my skin crawl a bit these days).
In reality it becomes tedious very quickly I don't if it's because you know all of their endeavors are doomed to fail or if its just a good story told badly. Also Cruise plays Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg in what has become his typical mirror kissing style.
Ultimately the film revolves around Cruise and not operation Valkyrie which spoils it basically.
