According to research from Cambridge University (from a combilation of 150 editions of X Factor and Pop Idol), Finalists who perform at the start of the programme are likely to be booted out.
This comes as 4 out of 8 contestants from this years series who sang in the second or third act in were booted out in the results show and first singers are not the greatest advantage, but less likely to be booted out like the later contestants.

This doesnt surprise me in the slightest. What tickles me most is the judges preferences and bias even though which acts they get are drawn at random to start with. The judges are ficcle and so is the audience.

That's because there rubbish at the start. The producers tell them when to sing to get it over with.

I think it's like when a waiter lists all the specials and you forget all of them except the last few so just pitch for the nicest sounding one out of those.
