Held in a private residence, Alexander McQueen’s final collection was a tranquel affair of white bandage and gold feathers. The show was meant to take place at Conciergerie one of the gloomiest of Marie-Antoinette’s prisons, however the 18th century manor which hosted the private showing seems almost as fitting. McQueen’s pieces are said to be inspired by 15th and 16th century painting. You can sense the Botticelli angel motifs in silk imprimés and the grotesques hellscapes of Bosch in certain dresses. McQueen, reportedly devastated by both the death of his mother and the 2007 suicide of close friend and mentor creates a hauntingly angelic and tortured final showing.
