H for Hyde Park

pinkietessa
The history of Hyde Park as a jolly green space in London goes back even further than the Norman Conquest but then it was owned by the Monks of Westminster.

So imagined how annoyed them Monks were when Henry VIII decided to take it off them in 1534, as a result of the Act of Dissolution. I think you will find they weren't dissolute However, with the arrival of Charles I (the one who lost his head) everyone could be dissolute in a big way as it is he that we can thank for the access we treasure today. That's right even you, you blinking peasant! Horrah! for him then!

It wasn't until Queen Caroline (not the one of Brunswick) that we got really lucky and got two parks for the price of one.........Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Often hard to know which one is which right enough. But I think we'll live - eh?
