I'm High on Life!
Do artists do their best work before they get clean?
By Tom Shone

( an excerpt -

[ Even Charles Bukowski, briefly sober to battle tuberculosis, found himself composing a series of poems about his cats and one about the "little bluebird in my heart."

I say,
stay down, do you want to mess
me up?
you want to screw up the
works?
you want to blow my book sales in
Europe?

The headaches are biggest for the bad boys, whether bad-boy poets (Bukowski), bad-boy painters (Hirst), or bad-boy actors (Sheen). Theirs is the most humiliating of climb-downs. Dark sides tend to shrivel beneath the pitiless fluorescent glare of the rehab; nothing shrinks the gonads more than the prospect of drawing up an amends list to the bats whose heads you've bitten off. ]

Hendrix wasn't a martyr, he just made bad choices. Morrison wasn't a martyr he was a fatalist with a long spoken desire to "pass to the other side of the doors of perception). Cobain wasn't a martyr, he was simply weak and couldn't cope with how his words were reacted to. Joplin was killed by her own alcoholism... Martyrs they are not.

On the point of this post, I would have to say that it is extremely common for artists to loose some spark when they become "clean and sober" if thier early carreer was involved in any substance. There is something about the shift in perception you experience while under the influence of any substance that can show you ways to think that you never have (sometimes never should have) before. However there are the rare cases where the artist shows some marked improvement after thier "recovery", but I think the inverse is more frequent.
