'Welcome to the Matrix of Human Ecology. Where Image is No Longer Everything. What's Beyond the Surface, the Story Underlying?'
World's Easiest Catch is a philosophical comedy that traces the life cycle of the sustainably-caught rock crab of southern California from the ocean to the dinner table. WEC primarily attempts to re-connect the consumer with a final product in the grocery store by unraveling the colorful "story behind the surface." This connecting-the-dots adventure--from fisherman to distributor to marketman to restaurant owner to farmer's market to consumer, to even representative scientists and government officials--simultaneously ends up constructing a collective meditation of prismatic human perceptions, language systems, values, and interactions among diverse professions revolved around the "baton-tossing" of one common resource within a common, local environment.
This short introduction is a philosophical exploration within the grocery store that serves to set up the unraveling of a longer film, which is in the process of being created.
WEC introduction was filmed and edited during the pioneering Blue Horizons course at UC Santa Barbara during the summer of 2007, under the advisorship of Michael Hanrahan (President of Ocean Channel) and Dr. Constance Penley.
