They paid for cage fight, got gay love

Image

Sacha Baron-Cohen of "Borat" fame, may have been responsible for a hoax played on a stadium full of Arkansas wrestling fans. Audience members thought they were going to a "cage fight" style wrestling match, but instead of wrestling, the two actors stripped each other down to their underwear and started kissing.

Audience members threw beers at the actors. Local officials were visually outraged. Everyone entering the stadium signed wavers explaining they were being filmed. There were posters throughout the stadium also announcing the cameras.

"An elaborate array of mounted and handheld video cameras caught the crowd of 1,600's reaction as the two men "went right up to the line" of the city's morality laws, Holland said. The two men stripped down to their underwear, kissed and rubbed on each other, the sergeant said."

Cohen has a film coming out next year featuring "Bruno", the gay Austrian fashion reporter created for "the Ali G Show." "Baron Cohen, in the guise of Bruno, often interviewed hapless subjects in the South."

Representatives for Cohen refused to comment on the stunt.

    • I didn't like Borat- I thought it was annoying and sucked really- totally overrated.
But this, is hilarious. I don't want to like it, but I do.

    • I wonder whose bigotry was truly exposed? The crowd who was lied to about what they were to see or the cohen fan boys who miss the point of his message by throwing out disparaging generalizations and showing an intolerance to other people's opinions.

Thats a really good question, maybe the Cohen fan boys may have been wrong, but I dont think so. America is such a mess currently because some people are just like those fans. I dont agree with Homosexuality but that doesn't mean I'm gonna throw stuff at a gay person when I see them. I really dont care, a persons sexual orientation has nothing to do with me!

    • If they weren't smart enough to read between the lines then, well they deserved to see the Super Gay Action.
And who cares if two guys were kissing?? If your son or daughter were gay would you throw a beer at them??

    • Sorry Samurai Dave, I couldn't understand you very well with all the self-righteous sniffing and turning up of your nose. You sound as if you are one of those educated elites to whom you so disparagingly refer. Being bigoted and ignorant has less to do with a college education and more to do with a general lack of character; just look at the current administration for clear examples that college education does little to change narrow minds.
Bottom line is, Baron-Cohen is balls-out funny at times, and he knows how to get people to reveal their ignorance with very little encouragement required on his part.

    • What I love is when Sacha Boren-Cohen does nothing more than put a microphone in front of these morons and let them hang themselves with their own idiocy and ignorance. Anyone with more than three firing synapses could figure out that they are being had, yet these guys are so indoctrinated into parroting what they have read that they don't have the intelligence to see they are being led on. Keep it up, Sacha, you are one of the best satirists in popular culture today!

    • although cohen might come off as an elitist-
i think he is doing what many good comedians have done in the past.

Cohen is showing us how fucked up our culture is.
to watch the youtube clip of the guy threatening to kick his ass if he calls him gay, the spring breaker turning very angry over being on gay tv...

he is showing us how ridiculous these stereo types are and how our fear in the world is what perpetuates it.
its really not cohen that is funny- its our culture we have created.

    • Baron-Cohen is a douchebag. I love almost everything he does (as far as Da Ali G Show is concerned), but he's still a douchebag. Most celebrities are!

I think it's hilarious as hell about the hoax, and wish I could have seen the reaction, but I do agree with those that say they'd be pissed if they had been duped (but not necessarily because it was two people of the same sex kissing, moreso about not being able to take advantage of the $1 beer).

For example had I been told I was going to see a free Erasure concert and there would be $1 Imports, only to be subjected to Toby Keith in concert with $1 Keystone Light, I would have had a bad reaction too. Not because Keith is straight & a douchebag or even the country music, moreso because there's nothing better than drinking $1 imports and dancing to Erasure as you lip synch (and Keystone Light reeks!).

      P.S.
Those of you "defending" the South as though it were the Confederacy and this were Civil War times, get over it. I usually consider anything in the South that is to the West of Central Texas as "redneck". I only do because usually your told where the ghetto "black" or "latino" neighborhoods are so you stay away from them. When you travel through the South, you're told which rural routes and streets to stay off of if you're
"colored" because you might "run into trouble" with the "local folk". That's pretty damn "redneck" to me.

I don't think anyone is defending the south as the Confederacy or Civil Wars - just the opposite. The South has changed alot especially in the last 30-40 years and only those stuck with old stereotypes refuse to see that.

I agree with how one would be pissed off.

The South has changed. It's far cheaper to live here than the North, that's for sure. Plus the Economy slam affects some Southern cities far less than those in the North....especially job loss (if I'm not mistaken).

However, Mississippi and Alabama (not so much Arkansas) are stuck in the past and can't seem to catch up. I would never step foot there because they just can't be present. There are cities that one should venture away from.

And if they did what they did in Cabot, ARK---I am pretty sure they would have been hunted down, skinned alive and hung in the main square. If they were brave and did their research and wanted real laughter from Arkansas persons...they would have done it there and got away with it. That would have won the hearts of many who live in Arkansas.

    • Mafioso:

How exactly are they stuck in the past, Jammer? Since the 60s with the exception of the Jenna 6 (which was really minor in comparison), there has been more racial tension and riots outside of the South - the LA riots being one big example.

Atlanta has a large black population and is the host city for Freakin' and is part of the 3rd Coast or Dirty Coast Hip Hop scene.

The KKK is more centered in the midwest these days with the neo-nazis than they are in the South. When they go to Pulasaki they come as visitors from afar not residents.

I just find it all rather amusingly hypocritical that people who assume that themselves are liberal use the same mindset to damn a whole group of people based on their own preconceived notions and prejudices.

    • I wonder if they got their $5 back? It seems a little unfair to make homophobes pay to see men make-out....

I think SBC is hilarious, and I generally love his shtick - especially when he takes on the powerful. There is no doubt that he's one of the most brilliant satirists of our time.

At the same time, I'm torn over acts like this, which magnify liberal scorn and inflame social conservatives. No one likes to be laughed at and ridiculed, and this won't do anything to change the minds of those who think homosexuality is a sin, at least in the short term. So what's the purpose? For us to laugh at the emotionally ignorant and feel better about our own enlightened views?

I do think the longer term impact of documenting this kind of groupthink and bigotry is important. I just wish there were more voices trying to bridge the gap.

Then again, I'm sure I'm taking this all too seriously. I was reading Team of Rivals right before coming here, so the divisive and unempathetic rhetoric from both North and South which ignited the civil war is on my mind. Luckily I don't think we're going to war over gay rights anytime soon.

    • In my opinion, if you expect to see a cage fight, that's what you want to see.
If it was 2 women or 2 men or a man and a woman, I would be pissed regardless.
All this does is confirm the Southern redneck/hick stereotype. Plus $1 beer. Hell yeah!

    • I think this was a very funny prank. The South needs to be exposed to the reality of the world somehow. Im not about pushing ones beliefs on others but when the beliefs of others include morality laws against two men kissing something needs to be done. These men did see some wrestling, tongue wrestling, and shouldn't complain. Sacha Baron Cohen is combining deeply rooted social constructions with in your face comedy that makes a lot of people uncomfortable. But as someone above noted, he is bringing light to "touchy" subjects. Way to go.

The South needs to be exposed to the reality of the world? I think a lot of places need to be even more so than the SOuth. This is just typical of people who know nothing of the South save old stereotypes which hypocritically represents a similar prejudiced mindset that people claim Southerners have!

I wonder how this would have gone down in the Middle East? Now that would have taken balls.

    • While funny, it just shows how much of an elitist asshole Cohen is. Picking on people who are basically working class and without college education is rather like intellectually bullying.

What would be more of a challenge would be fooling the educated elites into coming to an opera and instead have an actual cage match with wrestlers in opera costumes.

    • Living in Memphis, TN and having been to Fort Smith, AR, I can tell you now, the audience would have been humping the chairs in front of them had it been two chicks in the ring. However, Arkansas is actually not as "redneck" as you would expect. Deliverance was filmed in GA and TN people... Plus, Arkansas is the only state in the union that could survive on its own should something happen to the country. They have every natural resource a state (independent state) needs to survive on its own.-- of course, thats just a side note.

So true. I am from Arkansas, born in Little Rock, now live in Fayetteville.

It is really a mixed bag as far as how progressive folks are. My experience in Fort Smith is that many folks tend to be stuck in the mid to late 1800s. The mayor there is off his rocker (decided to declare English the official language of the city to improve communication and actually encouraged immigrant population to learn it as fast as they could!) and some women still refer to their husbands in public as Mr. . But, as with any place, there are great folks there and then there are the crazy homophobes.

I laugh at lots of things, but my opinions on those things I laugh at stay the same no matter how funny I might think something is.

ie racial jokes. There are some funny ones but I'll never be one to think how the jokes go as real or attribute them in such a manner to those that are part of that race. Each person has the same alloted time to prove whether or not I'll put up with them based on action and what they say.
