Iraq gets itself a beer festival

The party took place in a beer hall and included an oom-pah band, dirndl-wearing waitresses and frothy pints of beer. The hall's owner, German-born Gunter Voelker says he wants to dispel the notion that Iraq isn't a holiday destination and insists beer promotes harmony: "The war stays away from here — we can have the festival in peace."

I agree the beer fest is probably for foreign contractors. but Muslims are freaks just like Christians are so, yeah, "shotgun" western beerdoms down their throat whether they like it or not.

I agree with eddycree8. Another example of Western lifestyles being forced on a native culture. If they don't adapt, we'll tie them to a chair and shotgun the beer down their throats. A BeerFest in a Muslim country is not something I would be proud of endorsing. Come to think of it... Who are the tourists? Who in their right mind, taking into account current events, would travel to Iraq as a tourist destination? I am sure this was much more of an R&R thing for carpetbaggers and foreign contractors who have volunteered to risk their lives and reputation for a few extra bucks.

The post starts out "dozens of tourists" - I don't think the local Muslims have changed their religion to drink beer and listen to oompah bands. It was just another 'great' example of Western culture to them...

Hell Yeah! Good to see other cultures inter mingling. Even better to see the Iraqis hang loose and have a good time.

This sounds like something straight out of an episode of family guy. I'm not sure one passionate German guy with a lot of beer is going to convince people that Iraq is a great holiday destination at the minute.

Conjures up an incredibly surreal image. I'm a but unsure aboiut hte 'beer promotes harmony' idea though - just look at some of the neds in my neighbourhood on a saturday night and you'd swear you were in a war zone..
