Loved this pod! I'm one of those people who spends way to much time on the internet (I'm a StumbleUpon addict). If I had a phone that allowed me to have the internet always I would never get anything done.

Excellent tidbit here. a lesson that would benefit us all if we had any sense to heed it. I'd like to introduce a word no longer in the vocabularies of many in the modern world...Moderation. There you go friends, the key to happiness.

That's about the size of it, people who don't have social relationships tend to be suffering. I do find it kind of silly that he hadn't figured out how to take a decent shower. ^^; There's solar powered methods, there's heating water on a fire, there are baths... I'm surprised that he is so reliant on his utilities that he couldn't think out of the box. I wonder how many people are like that?
Bicycling wouldn't be an issue at all if there were better means to get around. There are too many roads that are car only around me, so it does limit where I can go in my auto-less lifestyle. So that sucks for me when I go off the grid entirely. ^^;

I just saw this pod on Current! Its the first one that has actually compelled me to get on my wireless laptop, log into Current.com, find this pod, and write a comment about it! And that is saying something.
...this is a great pod. Very eye-opening. It makes me want to try living without technology for a week.
Thanks for this! - 2 years ago

This is spectacular, I am filled with joy and inspiration at this pod. I have strongly believed that technology holds too profound a grip on the way we live. I have lived without cable for about 2 years, and aside from loosening my budget substantially, I have come to recognize an inevitable brainwashing commercial stream that becomes a white noise prying at your subconscious as you laugh with your friends between shows. Pardon my run-on. I have gone from a cell phone back to a land line and learned to truly enjoy my time away from home, and do it uninterrupted. I just think life is too short to spend so much time/money on media input and techno-upgrade garble. Spend your time and money resourcefully, and please dont text and drive.

Nice work Stuart! It is crazy how much we rely on technology these days.... I can’t remember or being to imagine the old days when we use to have no phones. What a different world. I would love to go back and re-live these times.

Huh. I don't have a cell, ride my bike everywhere because of lack of car, cook off gas, take cold showers, and a outdoor guide as a profession. I aspire to get a car, and get a cell phone, and get a higher paying job. Maybe not.
Maybe I just need a hot girlfriend.
I got my eagle scout though.

Good vid. But fish tacos? Personally, I would not be impressed. Anything with the word "taco" in it other than "taco chips" makes my digestive track shudder. :P

Certainly too much technology can tune you out to the real world and human relationships, but having zero technology can have the same effect. Technology (the internet in particular) has helped me to foster new friendships and strengthen relationships I already have. Without technology I would be missing out on some very rewarding human relationships that I have now. I still write letters, talk to people face to face, etc. so I've found happy medium. As long as technology and modern conveniences aren't the sole focus of your life, I don't see any problem with taking advantage of them.
Ultimately I don't think it matters if you do with or without. It's really about being able to recognize the difference between using something as a tool to enhance your life versus letting it take over and dictate your life.

Good pod. Ironic that in order to learn about his liberation from technology we had to watch it on our comps/tv.

as technology grows we face the problem with becoming controlled and reliant on it, so taking some time away from technology to get back to roughing it old school is some thing every one should do at some point in their life.

I once lived for 6 weeks with phones,no running water or electricity. We did have a car and a park 15 miles away for filling water jugs once a week.. It is possible to bathe quite thoroughly with one gallon, if you don't over soap. And it is also possible to feed a family of four with non perishable foods cooked over a small, gathered fall wood fire. One learns to appreciate the natural rhythms and music in nature, and the creative strength inside us all. I hope to do it again next summer.

Great pod. I'd love to cut off from all personal technology and go into the wilderness for a while (or even just hide in a cafe), though work and studies these days would never allow for it. I think it'd be interesting to see what would happen if someone just stopped using non-neccessary internet, social networking and maybe mobiles for a while though (taking out the stuff about cookers and electric showers). Would actually socially interract more or less?

Well considering that travel to other countries was slow and limited messages like post... cycle and walk etc... to others houses, less traffic = safer roads = more fun for kids to run around without getting hurt/killed.

this is great. It has a great conclusion to it. In our tech filled world its hard to leave and step away from our playstations, macs and mobiles, they feel like a necessity but after a few days (with a few bumps along the road..being late for work, loosing business etc) its all worth it and you will feel better about yourself. But when you get back into things its hard to stay in the area of 'simple' tech, like a phone that just phones and texts because theres something that much better in the shop window..like the new iphone 3G..
very nice work.
