Sacha Baron Cohen's black Jesus to shock America

Image
brad2000
Sacha Baron Cohen, infamous for his satirical creations 'Ali G' and 'Borat' is back. This time Bruno, a gay Austrian fashion journalist, will be tearing through America's sensibilities once again in feature length form.

As well as the Jesus character, it is rumoured that Bruno and his boyfriend, Diesel, adopt an orphaned African baby boy called David and parade the child around fashion shows. It is thought the joke is aimed at Madonna, who adopted a Malawian baby called David Banda.

A source reported to have seen the film in a test screening told The Sun: "Sacha has really gone for the shock tactics this time. The characters were created deliberately to wind up certain sections of society and Jesus is one of them.

Baron Cohen is undoubtedly a genius, but upsetting religious American's isn't really that difficult.

What is it that makes Baron Cohen so popular?

Does anyone take exception to him getting laughs at other people's expense?

    • Did I just catch that someone compared him to Carlin? Be very ashamed! Sasha is as ignorant as those he entertains! Feel free to disagree...but that shows your IQ matches his. Stupid is as stupid does. All the good comedians looking for work and he hasnt been shot yet?!?

    • The Bruno character exposes our (US) homophobia (and perhaps more), much in the same way the Borat character exposed our xenophobia, religious intolerance, and international ignorance. I'm looking forward to the film.

It is sad when people think that a certain way of thinking only goes to one country.

We are all human. All thinking falls within all borders. Period.

There are NO smarter countries. That's a farce.

Good point, Jammer. As Borat was filmed almost exclusively within the US, I assumed it especially targeted the US and our vices. But, as you point out, our vices are especially unique. We were used (for a myriad of reasons) to make a greater point. Excellent response.

      Thanks.

Because if he did this in an African country it wouldn't nearly be as funny. Just like SNL can't make fun of African children starving. They have to make fun of the person that everyone knows. It's not that a starving child can't be funny...it's that it goes against their skewed idea of moral right to guide American's to vote like they think.

So using America as a 'joke' for this movie is to show that such thinking can be funny but it's a problem and people who see it and see the problem should laugh (that's the point) but also realize that the problem isn't just in America.

I like your response too....it's not picking on America as much as it is using America to get a point out about the world in general. Hopefully...it makes it less obnoxious in a way if that's it. Less middle schoolish. ha.

    • Ha.hahahahaha......

when he's old will he still be funny? When people get older they lose the funny....they become strict---guess he shouldn't have kids. Kids makes you not allow them to watch TV. You know who you are...MADONNA.

      Or you're not paying attention.

Humor is different when you get older. You joke about different things. What made him laugh when he was 17 would not make him laugh nearly as much before he died.

Some people find things funny that they won't after an event. Bad jokes like rape jokes could make one laugh until they are raped themselves and then they don't think they are funny any more.

George Carlin was also someone that could have been aborted because his mother wanted to do that. But that wouldn't make you think that abortion was wrong---losing the chance to laugh at this man that was a comic wonder.

People hold double standards for lots of things and I think comedians are the worst.

A change in what you find humorous and "losing your funny" are not the same. You don't lose something if you gain it elsewhere, and ceasing to find immature or insensitive things funny is a part of growing up(for some).

In addition, if Carlin was aborted then we wouldn't know of his humor to miss him. Fortunately, he wasn't however I doubt it would have changed my stance either way.

another interpretation would be that the fault does not rest with the public but the one making the objection.

have you been generation gapped and are now feeling passed by?

    • I think his comedy shows a reflection of his Jewish beliefs and the changing movement of less importance on religion in America. Genius.

    • He used to be funny, but because the yanks got so upset last time around, he's basically just trying to really wind them up...it's not comedy anymore, so what is it? 'Shock' reality tv?

    • I've said before, either everything is off limits or nothing is. The second you start making a special list then you might as well tear up freedom of speech for the pc society. Honestly, it may hurt for some people, but everyone really needs to grow a funny bone and get over themselves. I'm trying to figure out why a black Jesus would be offensive though. Hell, I'm still trying to figure out why the catholics have such a problem with a married Jesus. People are too sensitive and reactionary.

    • I really have a hard time understanding why some people care so much. Personally, I think he is super funny and has a pretty good point with this film.

Also, as much as we don't like to admit it, America is a very narrow-minded place sometimes and people need to remember that this is a FREE country.
Instead of criticizing right away, why don't we just listen for once?

    • As a Christian and the point where I fully tolerate, is that these guys can mock the people as much as they want. You have my support and I would help you for free! But mockery to things that cannot defend themselves like a Jesus sculpture or anything related, is fucked UP.

Mock as much -real- people as you want, IN THEIR FACE. Make us laugh and this type of things make people loosen and start to accept things.

    • HE is super-religious! No one ever talks about that fact! Sacha Baron Cohen is an EXTREMELY religious and pious person! He lived on a kibbutz. He even required that his girlfriend convert to Judaism before having his baby! And he makes fun of everyone equally, in a really smart and funny way.

Everyone always cheers South Park for mocking everyone equally. Sacha Baron Cohen does the same, only LIVE, and he's much braver and wittier than those idiots. It requires an inordinate amount of strength, talent, and creativity to do what he does. As an actor, I can't even IMAGINE how difficult it is to live inside an improv bubble the way he does. It's crazy.

    • Sacha Baron Cohen is super smart (he read history at Christ's College, Cambridge). I'm sure his shock tactics will have a point, and will go way beyond anything Jerry Springer could come up with as far as commentary on our society is concerned.

    • he's genius. typically, his comedy comes at the expense of those with hubris from being in power through money, influence, or ignorance. brilliant.

    • Yes please! The fascination of Borat's comedy situationism, his theatre of cruelty, is that its hero was deeply unsympathetic. Ali G had a kind of goofy charm, Borat was horrible, i cannot wait to see what Bruno has in stock.

Bring on another mocu-reality adventure through the US!

    • Mr_Costello:

I agree Bruno seeks to expose America's homophobia by creating an extreme exaggerated stereotypical homosexual. From a gay man's perspective I don't find this offensive at all. In fact he is playing a character , and he executes it so well.
