Kung Fu Hustle (Chinese: 功夫; pinyin: Gōngfu) is a 2004 Hong Kong martial arts comedy film co-written, co-produced, directed by and starring Stephen Chow. The film is a humorous parody and a homage to the wuxia genre, and contains most of the characteristics of a typical wuxia movie with exaggerations, serious situations and comic plots. Set in 1930s Shanghai, it is a tale of redemption for the central character, portrayed by Chow, a petty criminal who is trying to join the city's most powerful gang.[1]

The use of visual effects has been widely acclaimed and the cartoon style of the movie accompanied by traditional Chinese music is its most striking feature.[2][3] Although the film features the return of a number of retired 1970s actors of Hong Kong action cinema, it is in stark contrast to recent martial arts films that have made an impact in the West, such as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero.[4]

The film was released on 23 December 2004 after two years of production and received positive reviews from critics. It went on to become the highest grossing film in the history of Hong Kong,[5] and the highest grossing foreign language film in the United States in 2005.[6]

    • Our Nit Piky Wannbe Samurai that my statement has fallacies in it. Let me correct it for the record. " I believe that this little Chinese comedy is one of the best pictures ever made" But who I am I? I have watch Chinese Kung Fu movies for over 35 years. I have watched American movies for 43 years. This move is an entanglement of the good things both genres. It's the good ,bad, and Ugly of the orient. For you nit picky lil bastards I don't mean literally. Any way rent it and enjoy.

    • In my opinion Dave, and only mine. Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder? I said it was old because 5 years is a quarter of some posters life. Have you seen it? Or are you just looking to argue?

just pointing out some of the fallacies of your statements. I'm a movie buff and saying a movie that's less than 5 years old is old and one of the greats is pushing it. Had you just said this is great movie worth checking out or that it's underrated, I wouldn't have quibbled - though I still would have wondered if you worked for blockbuster.

    • Are you working for blockbuster?

2004 is considered old for a movie? Does that make the first Matrix movie from the silent movie era? Anyway, while it may be good saying it's one of the greats considering it's only been out 4 years is kind of stretching it. Legends need time to grow, grasshopper...

    • For all those of you who haven't seen this movie, please go rent it, pay attention to it, and enjoy it. It is really good. I don't know why I posted this, I guess I just wanted you guys to feel like I did last night when I watched it again. It has something American films have lost.
