PETA's veggie sex Super Bowl ad rejected by NBC

cheezynuts
NBC pulled the plug on a PETA pro-veggie commercial planned for the Super Bowl because it "depicts a level of sexuality exceeding our standards," according to NBC Universal's advertising standards executive, Victoria Morgan. The ad, which carries the tagline, "Studies Show Vegetarians Have Bet ter Sex," shows lingerie-clad stunners getting "intimate" with vegetables.

    • I have no respect for PETA whatsoever. However, does anyone remember the beer commercial with the two girls fighting in a fountain taking their clothes off? How is this any different unless the people behind the Super Bowl are really trying to clean up their act to make it more family friendly.

Like I said PETA has a long history of hypocrisy and Eco terrorism but to ban this commercial is just ridiculous.

eco-terrorism is right wing slander. PETA doesn't kill anyone/thing that's more than I can say for our own government. They don't even go as far as ALF/ELF, whom I support 100%. Just cause they're staining furs and releasing test animals they are terrorists? Your logic is fucked.

I look at Eco terrorism as sabotage in the name of saving animals or the environment. I really don't see how destroying property gets a point across. In fact, it just pushes people farther away from your cause.

I've been a vegetarian for a little under a year now and cannot rap my head around the tactics that PETA uses. The only way I've convinced my friends and family to pay attention to animal abuse and healthy eating is through my own actions, not standing up on the table and beginning to preach every night at dinner.

And krush, if you think PETA doesn't kill, you are sadly mistaken. http://www.newsweek.com/id/134549/ I'm not talking about releasing test animals or the lobsters at the grocery store. I'm saying that a lot of their actions are not commendable and are unreasonable. If you truly care about animals, you would support a smart group like the ASPCA. A group who doesn't resort to ridiculous measures to make a difference.

I totally understand what you're saying animalia and I also understand that "terrorism" is a rough word to throw around no matter the subject. I do agree that it is too loose of a term. However, when you're trying to state your opinion through damaging property, damaging lives, your voice can't be heard at all.

And as someone who's volunteered for the Humane Society especially during Hurricane Katrina when thousands of animals were displaced, I can tell you how they run their organization and it is not as a kill shelter. There are many local SPCA that may be privately owned or done by a city government that don't have the same standards and regulations as the ASPCA. They cannot be lumped into the ASPCA and their actions cannot be dictated by the ASPCA. Trust, I have my priorities right.

I do support the ASPCA and I do get what you're saying about big organizations. But with a big org comes these branches of an org that can run their personal chapter anyway they like. That is something I don't agree with and something that the ASPCA should look into if they care enough about their image among animal rights activists. It sucks that a local chapter cannot be held to the same standards.

But I thank you for an interesting discourse and sharing the No Kill Advocacy page with me. I think I have a new connection! :)

EDIT:Also, apologies. I realized I just intermixed the ASPCA and the Humane Society. I suppose that's what you meant in your response.

You're an idiot libero, fucking clueless.

NO KILL SHELTERS DO KILL, THEY JUST SEND THE ANIMAL TO BE KILLED SOMEWHERE ELSE.

God what a fucking tool you are. And a coward too. You'd rather animals go insane in their kennels and then HAVE to be put down somewhere else rather than admit that there is a huge overpopulation problem and that Americans should only get their pets from shelters.

Fuck you for not supporting the ASPCA you self-righteous cowardly prick. Seriously, you don't give a shit about animals. You just do this because it make you feel warm and fuzzy. If all shelters were no kill shelters, you'd have millions of animals who would go completely insane and live utterly miserable lives.

Regardless with who I agree with - what was the point in the verbal vomit there SAL. Aren't we all adult enough to agree or disagree without calling each other names?

I don't agree with much of what Krush has said, although I can respect their opinion on other topics. So I feel that PETA is destructive - I find their methods extreme and on some (not all, some) occassions unnecessary and many times have a negative affect on "the middle ground" as someone put it. But that doesnt make themo r myself any more or less intelligent for our POV.

      Chill out.

"The organization has practiced euthanasia for years. Since 1998 PETA has killed more than 17,000 animals, nearly 85 percent of all those it has rescued." (from the article)

    • i laughed my ass off. that's a great commercial. Hook, line, and sinker. If I saw that on TV I'd be well on my way to the website.

Oh the people in control of television.

"Push the middle away" as in alienating people who don't have much of an opinion either way... like me. I'm an omnivore and don't have much of an opinion on vegetarianism and when I see the crazy shit PETA does, it makes me think that vegetarians are a little crazy (not really, I'm just trying to prove a point).

I have to agree with Jenkins...I used to like PETA...quite a bit actually. But now they just come across as pushy and crazy. They are forceful and go for shock value rather than actually try to educate and make people aware.

Also why do we NEED more radical vegan organizations? I dont think anyone should push their diet/way of life on another, its just rude and pretentious to think that your way is the only right way. PETA is just as bad as the radical evangelical churches of the world. Being vegan is great, I applaud those who do it...I also applaud those who go raw, those who eat organic, those who go wheat free, those who grow their own food, etc...I just dont think any one of those is the right way for EVERYONE to live.

      agreed with jenkins.

vegan here. activism good. radical good. peta... bad.

it's about being insightful, clever, thought provoking, astute. getting people's attention is only half the battle. this seems to be all peta is concerned with. after that, they throw caution to the wind and really give the rest of us a bad name, offending and making a mockery of those who might otherwise acquire an interest in the cause.

eta: i must give credit where credit is due however. peta does have a wealth of resources for those already looking to change their way of life. great recipes and articles on nutrition throughout their many sister sites.

As a vegetarian I am ashamed of vegatarians that try and push the diet choice onto other people and sit on their soap box platforms saying "my way or the highway"

Im with jenkins. No need for Extremeist actions. Education = good, PETA = crazy

      @krush
"What the fuck are you talking about? We need more radical organizations like PETA. Your rather prude for a vegi..."

Name one thing PETA has accomplished. When people think of PETA, they think of a group that alienates people. Tell me what omnivore is going to look at that sea kitten proposal and think; "hmm, maybe they're right."

I'm all for vegetarian groups keeping slaughter housed accountable for their actions, but what gives PETA the idea that outlandish ideas are ever going to work?

I'm totally with you Jenkins. I've been a vegetarian almost my whole life, and I can't stand PETA or its followers. They believe that animal rights come before human rights, which is absurd.

PETA isn't really for animal rights. The only ones that truly care and understand animals are specialists out in the field helping animals such as abandoned seals grow up with little human contact so they can be released back into the wild. Those are real animal rights activists and I can tell you right now, most of them are not vegans.

    • Absurd!!!!!!!!!! I mean, most of the commercials aired during the superbowl have sexual aspects to them, and many of those are definately not appropriate for teenagers and children....but alot of things these days make no sense, so whats new right?
