The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) posted numbers that make most countries economically envious. This eye-popping report laid it out like this: “The current economic expansion began when the government got control over the national oil company in the first quarter of 2003. Since then, real (inflation-adjusted) GDP has nearly doubled, growing by 94.7 percent in 5.25 years, or 13.5 percent annually.” What? 94.7%?
This is getting ridiculous. Well, we have Social Security…Uh, so do they. And guess what. Yup. Again, the CEPR drops a wake-up call bomb. “Among the entire population, this figure (Venezuelan Social Security) has risen from 1.7 percent receiving benefits to 4.4 percent. As is the case for other indicators, social security’s performance was slow at the beginning of Chávez’s term, actually fell slightly during the oil strike, and has grown very rapidly since 2003, when Venezuela recovered from the oil strike and the government gained control over the oil sector.” ______Sam Rhodes
So chide Hugo Chavez all you want. Go ahead, view him as a ruthless dictator; the Devil incarnate. But rhetoric aside, he has Venezuela going in the right economic direction. One we know nothing of in America lately. Up.

You can continue making all the assumtions you like about me, but I am not going to bother and continue this discussion with someone who thinks they know what goes on in an entire country because they've read about it - it's actually quite insulting to me and to my people.

Apparently you aren't one of the peons that are benefiting from the proceeds from the nationalized oil. I will admit not all the people that are middle class or above like him, but the majority do. Why don't you read what other countries have to say?

It's not what I've read; I've lived there and still have family living there and the situation is pretty dire. The US government is not the only one to spread propaganda.

He must be doing something right the people love him. Maybe it's because they are getting housing, schools, and clinics? You may want to do some research. Our government has tried at least twice to kill him and his people saved him. We spread propaganda about him and would like him dead for big oil.

Are you kidding me? Then why is more than 90% of the population bellow the poverty level? And why does it have one of the highest crime rates in the world?
Just because he was/is anti-Bush, does not make him a great leader. And those reports? Keep believing everything you read.

Chavez is just making sure that industry within Venezuela has some accountability for the welfare of the people in Venezuela.... wish I could get some actual value out of MY tax dollars from the government.

The problem with Chavez is that he won't let us steal their oil anymore. He has the quaint idea that improving the quality of life for the masses in Venezuela is a better idea. Silly guy, that's why we keep trying to kill him.
