Zombies Are the New Vampires

"...It's not easy to put your finger on what's appealing about zombies. Vampires you can understand. They're good-looking and sophisticated and well dressed. They're immortal. Some of them have castles. You can imagine wanting to be a vampire or at least wanting to sleep with one. Nobody wants to sleep with zombies. They're hideous and mindless. They don't have superpowers. Their only assets are their infectiousness, single-minded perseverance and virtual unkillability. (See pictures of vampires' 90 years on screen.)

Nevertheless, they seem to be telling us something about the zeitgeist. Once you start looking, you see them everywhere. Who hasn't had a high school acquaintance come back from the dead as a Facebook friend or a follower on Twitter? And what monster could be better suited to our current level of ecological anxiety? Zombies are biodegradable, locally sourced and sustainable — they're made of 100% recycled human. And look out for those zombie banks, President Obama!..."

    • well actually zombies havent replaced the popularity of vampires (cough-twilight-cough), but zombies are dominating in video games. also vampires have experienced decreasing popularity with the male sex because of a certain book series.

    • Vampires want to suck my blood and in return I get to live forever, have beautiful women come to me with the merest glance, and I only have to clothes shop for one color.

      Zombies want to eat my brain, and in return I get to wear ragged clothes, look about as smart as that kid who boxes my groceries (sorry kid) and send beautiful women screaming in fear and loathing...

    • "Zyrate comes in a little glass vile" Life IS the leading cause of death! If half the world's population wasn't already zombies, then how the hell do you explain MTV or Twitter? Zombies are real now! I hang out with vampires & they are all pretty nice people for the most part,but zombies...Errr...Well...They aren't friendly they love taking over ANYTHING! & they just aren't too smart! Zombies in games these days,now those zombies are the type I most fear,they move fast! & that's creepy in a time when the human mind is rot! Zombie s everywhere! Who do you trust?     • I love Zombies but at the same time I hate 'em. I've seen every possible Zombie movie, whether it was the classics or some of the new ones like 28 weeks later, I love it all. The only part that freaks me out, is what if you woke up one day & everyone you knew was dead...well soon to be alive again yet you had to kill 'em.

      There is some book out there called, "The Zombie Survival Guide" & I'm pretty sure it will come in handy one day.

    • Zombies aren't the new vampire, Zombies are better than vamps!!! Zombies are so much more bad ass, especially after Twillight made Vampires look like a bunch of pussies. The vampire Genre is nothing but Romance fantasy's for 12 year olds and house wives.

      Right, not that Vampires are LIKE Zomibes in all ways, but that they would be a "form" of Zombie- kind of like all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are squares, or how whales, dolphins and porposies are all in the same family of "Cetacea".

      I see where you're going with this Delia, and I think you're correct. They are both reanimated corpses, they both require the ingestion of living human tissue or fluids to survive and they both make serious bank at theatres for their mass appeal.

      Zombies are like mopeds, cheap but fun and disposable. They may be fun but you wouldn't want your friends to know you drove one.

      Vampires are like the Aston Martin with their much higher level of performance, greater appeal to the higher social echelons and who would be embarrassed to be seen in an Aston Martin?

    • i have loved zombies my whole life. since i was a wee tike in 83. i have always loved horror stuff in general. and yes i think zombies are cooler than vampires- but i love them all.

    • I think this is because anyone can imgaine killing a zombie, there basically half retarted people that were allowed to dispose of. Vampires on the other hand require special weapons and are apparently borderline super hero because in the end humans like disposing of things that are not the same.

    • I've had discussions with my dad about Vampire movies vs zombie movies.

      My dad thinks castles and vamps are cool

      while I prefer a zombie flick riddled with anxiety and social commentery

    • i do beleive that zombies are the new vampires,and i enjoyed being alive to see the popularity switch over, but more people over time i think will still dress like vampires.~~regardless~....
      ZOMBIES ARE SO BAD ASS!
      i think that every one who loves to watch zombie movies, are all secretly waiting for a zombie invasion!!
      (myself included)
      we are all waiting for a reason to run through the streets and bash and shoot zombies!
      you cant do that with vampires.. too tough,...to scary...

      meanwhile werewolves are trying to make a comback, and probably wont make it to big untill michale J. fox is dead! (lycans r sweet!)
