Burger King Slammed For 'Whopper' Of Insult

"The taste of Texas with a little spicy Mexican," a narrator's voice says.
The taller cowboy boosts the wrestler up to reach high shelves and helps clean tall windows, while the Mexican helps the cowboy open a jar.
Mexico's ambassador to Spain said Monday he has written a letter to Burger King's offices in that nation objecting to the ad and asking that it be removed. Jorge Zermeno told Radio Formula that the ads "improperly use the stereotyped image of a Mexican."

Issues that must be addressed---
the main problem here is that while they make fun of both Americans and Mexicans,
the mexican portrayal is showing
a small mexican man who is round,
[round Mexican men hold little appeal]while there is a tall American man.
[cowboys are ALL tall and kewl and heroic american men who smokers admire]Also, the size of the mexican individual isn't flattering.
[but in the case of small round Mexican GURLS,....]And let's cut the BS, what American is insulted by a cowboy?
[ NONE SHOULD BE,...at least not REAL MEN!]We aren't really known for that any more, the wild wild west days are long gone, or at least they are in the entertainment world.
[ small round Mexican women can bring the "WILD WILD WEST" to any real cowboy! (and thats what I call the "entertainment world"!)]"what American is insulted by a cowboy?"
[AGAIN, none SHOULD BE; cowboys are KEWL! but I repeat myself.]Just because the stereotype may be favorable to some it should be perpetuated?
[yadayadayada;addressed that,YOU BET! All real American men wish they were COWBOYS!!!]The last thing I personally want is for Americans to be identified as "cowboys"..
[YOU ARE DUM!].we had enough of that during the Bush Admin and look where that got us!
[ thats Exactly what IS GOOD for America, and SMOKERS, and COWBOYS; "bush" administration.---NAILED IT----

i guess it really depends on your target audience.. i can only speak for myself as a cultured (as in i've traveled to every u.s. state except alaska, and also to a half dozen other countries) texan - i happen to think it's fairly clever. if you're target audience isn't going to get the same feeling then you might not want to show it. there is a reason this same commercial isn't ran everywhere. i'm sure if we took almost every commercial ran in the u.s. and showed it to many other countries: (a) they wouldn't get it, or (b) they would be offended. it's kind of like traveling to europe and seeing what commercials they have. i usually don't get the point or laugh at them. cultures and values differ, so you can expect the marketing that is appealing to those values to change.
but in all honestly, lets get off the racism thing.

Can't have it either way, either you need to rail against all racist ads or just let free speech run its course. Don't get choosy. When you say, "take a joke," and then get your feelings all hurt when someone touches on your soft spot, you come across like a emotional basket case. Any decent joke can be funny to someone, but hurt someone as well. We Mexicans get bagged a lot, and if the same joke came down on blacks or others, there would be outrage. So get off your soap box on most other issues, unless your ready to fight across the line.

AswegoAsdego asked me why I'm not as outraged over this as I was about both the watermelon whitehouse and chimp cartoon scandal.
In regards to the watermelon one, the senator would have us believe he was unaware that watermelons were a stereotype about black people. That's obviously bullshit or else there is no joke in the email he was passing around. That's where most of my "outrage" was on that- first of all that he's a SENATOR and should have better judgement, secondly that he would bullshit the public.
When it comes to the monkey cartoon, as you quoted me, "Calling black people "monkeys" and implying they are less than human has been in the racist's repertoire for ages now." Perhaps if this ad came near that level of inappropriate I would be just as outraged, and again, it was published in a newspaper- I personally put politicians and that type of publication above Burger King when it comes to the judgment they should have.
As someone else pointed out, Americans are being stereotyped along with Mexicans in this ad (I guess...) - are all people from Texas 7 ft tall and wear cowboy gear? Where's all the "outrage" over that?
The real question is can we ever depict these types of "cultural" images- cowboys, luchadors, gangsters, asian guys who are good at math, etc, withOUT it being called a stereotype? Where is the line drawn?

Absolute in Mexico printed an add of "the way things should be" showing all of the US as being part of mexico. You know what i did? i didn't cry about it "oh no my feelings are hurt" wah wah... NO, i just refuse to buy absolute vodka anymore and told my friends to do the same. Loss of profits is a FAR stronger message than sounding like a whiny bench (if you know what i mean). Wow. Some of these comments were not what I expected from Current users at all. Just because you have been brainwashed to except certain racial stereotypes or have had to deal with them yourself does not in any way make it right. Stereotypes and in some cases racism are perpetuated because companies like Burger King who can spend millions of dollars on advertising and have the luxury of having their product seen by millions of people.

You have to take it in context. This commercial is meant to be funny. Yeah, there may be stereotypes being made but don't take it too seriously. Being Asian I've dealt with stuff like this from when I was in elementary school..
Other stereotypical comments or illustrations made by politicians or newspapers are more offensive because these people are suppose to be fair and unbiased. the only thing that ticks me off about stuff like this is that when that republican (i forgot who) said obama was going to grow watermelons at the whitehouse, people on current went fucking apeshit over it. So where is the outrage here? I mean really you let companies dictate cultural perceptions and then wonder why people are so fucked up.
examples:
Delia the artist:
"Grose claims he was "unaware of the stereotype that black people like watermelon," and didn't mean to "offend" African Americans."Bullshit. What the fuck did he think was funny if the cartoon was NOT playing off the stereotype of black people liking watermelon? He was just like "HAHAHA, watermelons are funny!" I don't think so.
and
I'm sorry but I can't believe some of you guys are saying this ISN'T racist. Even if it wasn't intended like that (and who are we to say what the intention was?) drawing a parallel between our black president and a chimp IS RACIST.
"It links the chimp to Obama, who signed his administration's economic stimulus plan on Tuesday." Calling black people "monkeys" and implying they are less than human has been in the racist's repertoire for ages now.
If you can honestly sit here and explain to me why this ISN'T racist I would appreciate it!

It is racist when obama is showcased as an ape because of the historical connotations of people calling blacks, monkeys.
It is not racist when people called bush a monkey, because the lack of past connotations. however it is NO LESS dehumanizing and insulting, so the bush camp would have equal right to be pissed off.I would love to see the day that racism is eradicated or becomes one big joke because it does not matter anymore, however when people get angry over one form of racism, it becomes ridiculous when they brush another form off.
Also the people whose cultures are being insulted have fair right to feel angry and insulted as within today's global economy and the practices of capitalism and the WTO many cultures are disappearing incredibly fast, and it is in their and the worlds best interests to get angry and defend themselves.

My outrage over the senator was that he was bullshitting everyone claiming that he had "no idea" what the stereotype was- here BK SAID "little spicy Mexican" in their ad and depicted it- they are not feigning ignorance.
To address the chimp cartoon, calling black people "monkeys" has been a way to degrade them for a very long time; implying that they are sub-human, which is how they were treated for a few hundred years. If this ad was portraying mexicans as being sub-human or playing off a particularly offensive stereotype, perhaps I would feel the same outrage.
Frankly I'm a little confused at what the stereotype is in this ad- as Jacques said "Are Mexicans stereotyped as being short and good at opening jars?"
However, if this is something that is hurtful to Mexicans, it is surely inappropriate. As I mentioned I've been weary of BK's advertising since the "Whopper Virgin" thing!

Because if we hold on to all the terrible things that have happened, and draw a line in the sand as to what is acceptable to do within one race and the same thing is totally unacceptable towards another, isn't that keeping racism alive? I honestly couldnt care less about the content in these situations, all i care about is the blind hypocrisy of those who do get upset.

I think what makes this particularly inappropriate has a great deal to do with how it is being used as well.
People may reserve the right to make racial comparisons between themselves or their races, comics employ racially contrived stereotypes and political satire may utilize stereotypes as well, but when a major corporation uses racially contrived stereotypes in the PUBLIC ARENA...to sell a product, that is just beyond ignorance on their part, and whether or not people take offense doesn't change the fact that this was a really stupid move on the part of Burger King.

Its funny. "a little mexican flavor" represented by a little mexican. Oh no's!!!! Poking fun at racist stereotypes is terrible!! Honestly, political correctness kinda kills things. Mexican is just as "racist" as Texan. Just because it happens to be a short brown person doesn't mean its racist......And if it is, the Texan depiction is just as racist so it balanced out haha.

You know what, yes it's a joke and yes, it may be funny....but a racist joke is still a racist joke no matter what.

People of short stature can more easily bench press more weight per body weight than a long armed person...
It's a matter of mechanics and leverage... - 3 years ago

I said per body weight...
I am 6'2" weigh 310 lbs...kinda fat but I can bench on a good day 460 lbs... One of the guys I lift with is about 5'4" weighs about 200 lbs... kinda fat and can bench 460 with ease. He's lifting over twice his body weight.
With his short arms and his barrel chest he doesn't have to lift very far to reach full extension... Built like a stump... but all of this is irrelevant to the post... - 3 years ago
