We live in a very different world than that of our grandparents. Americans are juggling jobs with the needs of children and aging parents. The time needed to tend a garden is not there for the majority of our citizens, certainly not a garden of sufficient productivity to supply much of a family's year-round food needs....
As you go about planning and planting the White House garden, we respectfully encourage you to recognize the role conventional agriculture plays in the U.S in feeding the ever-increasing population, contributing to the U.S. economy and providing a safe and economical food supply. America's farmers understand crop protection technologies are supported by sound scientific research and innovation....
Sophisticated Global Positioning Systems can be specifically designed for spraying pesticides. A weed detector equipped with infrared light identifies specific plants by the different rates of light they reflect and then sends a signal to a pump to spray a preset amount of herbicide onto the weed....
The CropLife Ambassador Network offers educational programs for elementary school educators at http://ambassador.maca.org covering the science behind crop protection products and their contribution to sustainable agriculture. You may find our programs America's Abundance, Farmers Stewards of the Land and War of the Weeds of particular interest. We thank you for recognizing the importance and value of America's current agricultural technologies in feeding our country and contributing to the U.S economy.

Oh yeah. Strawberries are small enough that you can easily grow them potted indoors or have them in a handing vine. I grew a specific type from the amazon that was a bit exotic and never really produced fruit though it had some killer blossoms. Your garden variety strawberries are quite good indoors as long as you make sure to give them steady temperature, light, and water they will thrive.

Speaking of ocanada, our frozen neighbors due north seem to have decided enough its enough.
You may find their resolve both interesting, and disturbing.

"Microscopic bugs, cornstarch and fungus. That's your new arsenal for grooming the perfect lawn.
The province's ban on all cosmetic pesticides locks into place today, banishing all the old chemical stalwarts such as Killex, Weedex and Grubout.
Hardware and garden stores across the province are removing the last vestiges of 245 banned products, containing some 80 outlawed chemicals, and stocking their shelves with natural alternatives and "biopesticides," bugs that kill weeds and pests."
They're going for it, while we twiddle our thumbs?

I used to garden. I am a terrible chef. Can't cook worth a darn, so it felt like the one good thing I was able to do with my family and to eat something I had helped put on the plate gave a great feeling of satisfaction. We never had any reason to use pesticides and we pulled weeds by hand. I have been inspired to do the same this year. In addition to our usual tomatoes and peppers I'm going to grow herbs indoors and strawberries so we'll have something fresh off the vine year round.

I'll pass on the DDT thank you. I'll take the time to grow my own nice and healthy even though a few nut cases think organic is not safe (LOL). probably to much DDT when they were kids.

Tear up your lawns and plant food ! You were gonna water it anyway , or someone was . Actually if you plant sweet peas and raspberries , skip breakfast and eat those , as you water and pick lunch veggies , lettuce and herbs , in stead of shopping . Eating becomes one, grounding event that invites health , instead of a truncated ,disconnected ordeal for tasteless trophies . Lettuce can grow indoors all year . Those tyrants practically dare you to defy them . Just think if we got rid of "lawns " we could really deal big AG a blow .

"American people cannot possibly have the time to grown their own food."
Yeah, who the hell has time to walk outside and water plants for 2 minutes? Doesn't Obama realize that I have Twittering to do followed by extensive reality television watching?
And ORGANIC? But all those icky bacteria will be all over my veggies, and in my busy schedule I simply can't squeeze in the minute and a half it takes to wash something with soap and water- better to cover it in chemicals designed to kill living things, that makes me feel safer in the 5 seconds I dedicate to thinking for myself before going back to "Rock of Love."
Sigh.

Looks like the Obama administration should be cracking down harder on these industries then instead of allowing them the same freedoms they had under Bush to continue poisoning us all. It seems kind of hypocritical that they should have a garden like this while these companies hold such sway over this very administration (FDA USDA) in continuing their deceptive advertising (Round Up). I hope this one garden isn't being used as a diversion to discussing the wider problems we now have with this in general. It isn't just one garden that needs defending.

We are greatful that you guys are discussing this issue. We are very much behind the curb in bringing this issue onto the for front of mainstream media reporting. Linktv debuted a very informative documentary concerning organic crop monopoly. Fusion Radio and the GlobalTalkRadioGroup found that Corporations have developed a very effective manufacturing campaign using organic science. It is to offset our near future food shortages. What do you think would be an effective solution?

The gall of a company transparently chiding heads of state for not including the company's product in a project is amazing. When did we let companies have so much clout as to order around our political leaders? Something is very upside down here.

Let me get something straight:The MACA sent a letter to the First lady, politely reprimanding her for growing a natural garden, and not condoning the use of the poisons they add to grow our food?
What is wrong with this picture!?
Even if pesticides help to produce what is deemed as "healthier" and more fruitful crops, it is STILL A POISON. And eating something organic is STILL healthier than that, no matter what they say. Has it ever occurred to anyone that a little bit of natural earth with your food is actually beneficial for your body? There are bacterias that are actually *good* for your you, and there are some living inside of you right now. Think about that.

Backyard gardening should be encouraged in every community, children should start gardens at their school. Being hands-on with the food they eat will make them appreciate it even more.
For more info on the actual White House garden, and to start your own- see http://www.FirstLadyGardens.com

Some people (myself included) like to hand pick weeds out of the garden, it is good to get fresh air and it makes me thankful I don't live in Vegas where everything dies. Maybe if more people took the time to garden there wouldn't be so many overweight and unhealthy people. Part of the joy in local farmers markets is taking my money and giving it to my neighbors and not Mid America CropLife Association.

i just love how these mega huge corporations that synthesize poisons and put them in our foods try to pose as innocent little small town Iowa farmers.

arrogant= condemnation before investigation.
like plants didn't survive millions of years before the pesticide was invented and people didn't have food to eat to nourish them. unbelieveable the foolishness some people take as truth. pesticides are POISON and anyone who thinks it's OK to eat poison must be already poisoned beyond repair...and to blame it on the hippies that there is organic food? WOW! what would my granddaddy say? FOOLS! helpless FOOLS!....the bread ye cast apon the waters always returns........that's what he would say...or he who diggeth a pit will fall in it. - 3 years ago

I think its a great idea but I was never strong on Organic Food in General Organic foods have repeatedly been found to harbor more illness-causing bacteria than conventionally grown foods.

It is interesting how our current ways of harvesting crop (i.e. through the use of herbicides, pesticides) is considered 'conventional' whereas growing something in your backyard, a la mother nature's way, is not.

There are pros and cons to both sides. There are ways to get rid of bacteria on your organic food- try, for example, washing it with some soap and water.
