First you have to want to quit drinking!
Drinking is sometimes self-medication. Maybe he needs to be assessed by a social worker and placed in some sort of program to figure out how he can function in society with out repeated jail time.
Some people feel the most secure in a lock down facility and will repeatedly commit acts to get back in.
Socially they are unable to function in an unstructured environment, the demands are too much pressure. In jail you are told what time everything happens and you get fed, clothed and a cot to sleep on. To some people that's better than what they can get on the outside.
Just a thought. - 2 years ago

Alcoholism is uncureable in a lot of cases. Many can disagree but groups classes and rehab cannot cure everyone.

ahhhh people. It's easy to look down your nose at this guy. Call him a bumb. Point out how much he's cost the taxpayers. My money says Paul would agree with you.
Really; only law enforcement, those that work with alcoholics in recovery, and the alcoholics themselves and I'm one of those too, have a clue how widespread this is. And how sad. We see the Paul's in the news. We see the wino's on the steeet.
What you don't see are the functioning alcoholics that haven't lost it yet. I've attended AA meetings that were wholly doctors and nurses. And even in AA you only find those that have come to recognize their problem or are honest enough with themselves to admit maybe they have a problem too. There are more that haven't arrived there yet than there are that have.
Did you know that alcoholism and drug addiction are treated exactly the same way? Same problems - same symptoms - and the same way to deal with it, if you can at all. Understand there is no cure for either one. It never goes away. never. You can abstain for 30 years and be right back into it in the blink of an eye; your tolerance included. Race, sex; no difference.
Understand also there's not a single alcoholic that wants to be one. Stopping isn't all that hard. Most alcoholics can do it. Staying in recovery long term is where the problem lies. "Okay, I've got a handle on this now" is real easy to fall into. Did you not accomplish 5 years of sobriety? Never works. Paul is screwed up and he knows it. He's not hiding or denying. But it seems to me like he's given up thinking he can win. And if that's true; then he can't. And that's a sad thing. Another kill for alcohol and another lost human who maybe didn't have to be.
Paul doesn't want you sympathy. Alcohol kills your brain, little by little. He may not have enough left to do him much good anymore. You say he did it to himself? true. I say he really can't help it - not by himself. Alcoholism is a daily struggle not to drink. Every single day for the rest of your life. It's hard.
Do you have this problem? Hey, you might. Want to know the truth about yourself? That's easy. You're either an alcoholic, or you're a social drinker, or you're between the two. A social drinker really doesn't care. No big deal. So quit. Make it a good test - don't be easy on yourself. Say a year. If this isn't easy to do, then you need to take a closer look. But remember this: the longer you wait the harder it gets. Ask Paul.

One year of tax payer expense for a $1.99 can of beer.
That means the people in his state, man, woman and child paid for that beer time and time again.
How STUPID is that!?
It wasn't the man who stole from people, it was the broken down judicial system.
Is this planet STUPID?

slarabee:
Hmmmm. I am absolutely sympathetic toward people paying the heavy, heavy toll that comes with addiction. As we have seen in recent celebrity stories (e.g., Mel Gibson, Robin Williams) it is just so INSIDIOUS! Months, years, even DECADES of sobriety does not render someone with a certain brain chemistry immune from possible disaster. Sucky with a capital SUCK.
But...sevenTEEN aliases and four phony social security numbers? I suppose he may have been SORRY on a few occasions, but I have a hard time believing that he has ever made much of an effort to try to overcome his addictions. Maybe...

really? you are sympathetic at this point? i am hugely sympathetic usually but NOT here. what happens when tomorrow this dude drives drunk and runs into your car killing your son or daughter. then will these many priors add up to ohhhh... i don't know... something that should have been paid attention to? i'm all for forgivness but good god- get this guy off the streets. he doesn't even want to be there. house arrest at least.

wow, some people just don't learn. from the article:
"
During previous court hearings, Portsmouth police said Baldwin's criminal record and interactions with police date back to 1984 and include 152 arrests, eight trespass orders, 75 citations, four different Social Security aliases and 17 different name aliases.
During an arraignment in May 2008 on theft charges, Baldwin repeatedly noted he didn't want a lawyer and told Judge Gardner: "I've been in this court more than you have."
"
... just wow.
