WTF is going on in the NY Senate?

There has been a lot of global news lately, so perhaps people are unaware that the New York Senate has been acting like a buncha jerks! From the AP:

"It climaxed Tuesday with a surreal display of simultaneous sessions in the Senate chamber, the factions shouting over — and at — each other. Democrats stayed in their seats for the Pledge of Allegiance to spite Republicans who started the pledge. As a Democrat banged with one gavel at the podium, protected by the sergeant at arms, a Republican banged on a reporter's desk with another. One senator exclaimed, "Duh!"

WTF is going on? Again, from the AP:

"The coup began June 8 when Thomas Libous, R-Binghamton, presented what appeared to be a routine bill to the Senate's presiding officer at the time, Neil Breslin, D-Albany. Following the chamber's rules, Breslin started reading the bill.

The trap was set.

The motion called for replacing the Democrats' top two officers and turning over Senate control. Democrats hemmed and hawed, countered at every turn by Republicans.

"It's a coup!" uttered Sen. Ruben Diaz, D-the Bronx. On the Senate floor, Libous loudly told the stunned Democratic leadership, frantically whispering into phones about legal options, to act on his motion or step down.

"I move that we adjourn!" shouted Sen. Jeffrey Klein, D-the Bronx.

"Roll call! Roll call!" Libous shouted back, windmilling his hand to keep the parliamentary plotters moving.

The Democrats stormed out, cut the lights, TV and Internet feeds, and silenced the microphones.

In 26 minutes, 30 Republicans and two dissident Democrats from New York City had seized control."

After that, one of the senators went BACK to the Democratic Party, making the Senate 31-31 split. Since then, my state's Senate has been in total gridlock and resorted to childish antics including screaming at each other, locking the doors on one another and even HIDING bills that are supposed to be discussed. They don't even want to talk to each other- they are insisting on SEPARATE sessions to work this BS out. All of this happens while our Gay Marriage legislation is sitting in bill purgatory, waiting for them to get their shit together!

Governer Patterson has threatened many things, including not paying the senators until they do some actual work (what a novel idea!) - in fact, he is taking it to COURT! This whole mess has been happening for about 3 weeks.

All I have to say is, WTF New York, have some dignity, some pride and some f*cking work ethic! What do you think about this mess?

    • It would be fairly interesting if we allowed fights to the death in politics. At least then we'd have a regular switch of new people into the positions of power.

    • I actually think we need more of this kind of passion from politicians. I'm sick of boring civility and careful political posturing. I want rage and carnage.

    • Seriously!! I mean once a party gains a majority of seats in any Senate, they should just abolish all the other seats. Why do we even allow dissent from a minority party?!

    • I'm willing to bet one of the minor motivating reasons behind the republicans kicking up this fight is to supress that bill. But has the republican party been driven so far into the corner that they feel forced to resort to such BS tactics? and NY dem's, get your act together and put down an open rebbelion in your house of law!

    • The reason I'm particularly annoyed with this is, like I said, because our gay marriage legislation is just SITTING there waiting for our senators to get their shit together. It hasn't run into much controversy here and in my opinion, NY should have legalized gay marriage a long time ago. C'mon Senators, don't let the people down like this!

New York tends to vote Democrat and is the homestate of several Democratic presidents such as FDR. I guess the pubs must be really desperate to resort to such childish antics but the Dems arent doing much to put down their uprising. All this infighting is getting nothing done and its really pissing me off! If im not mistaken theres also a medical Marijuana bill in the Senate which i would LOVE to see get passed.

    • Sounds like politicians everywhere--since when have they ever done work--actually I grew up in upstate New York--nothing to do in Albany anyway.
