As you read his article, you will probably chuckle or even laugh out loud. But understand that these are facts and maybe it is not that funny. Actually, it's pretty sad...

It makes me mad that people think this way. (eg. "keep your gov't hands off my medicare!" and 18% of Americans believe the sun rotates around the Earth)
How can we inject some common sense into Americans?

Thanks to all the fox news contributors that like to blow things out of proportion. Your philosophy of criticizing. Our democracy to make it a better grand old party is working. I would rather have a sister working in a whore house than a brother that's a republican.

This is the greatest country, although not the smartest. The problem lies in our responsibilty as inhabitants of this nation to look a the issues in a matter that we say how it will benefit us or hurt us. Too many say screw the rest, I want mine. Many of those, not all, express this selfish atttitude towards the progression of society that regresses us. It's always two steps forward and ten steps back. Most of the trolls on both sides are rich and can afford the best. It's those that listen who are poor and need the help the most that need to know the facts and make educated decisions. Case in point the lady that yelled out at a town hall meeting "I don't want socialized medicine, and keep your hands off my Medicare!" WTF! Ignorance leads to the destruction of society.

Don't you remember how the furor got Bill Maher off TV right after 911. Boy how soon the right wingers forget how all decent was knocked down in the Bush Administration. I can't wait till someone does something about silencing some of the right wing nuts.

It is true that a portion of a television, radio, or internet audience only hear or read part of a topic and assume the entire message is received.

If it wasn't true , it wouldn't bother people . The truth stings a bit . It does have to be dealt with . "If ya ain't got the truth , ya ain't got nuthin' " I wonder what makes us so mentally frail that we cannot seem to face it ? I myself have had this problem . There must be a reason . Life too easy or too hard ? Crappy food ? Are we just mental infants ? To notice it is good , now lets go a bit deeper . The human ability to solve problems is unsurpassed .

I'm glad someone has finally said it. It SICKENS me sometimes at how much people feel like they need to debate all these political issues when they have no idea of what is going on.
Maybe Americans should channel their energy away from those trashy reality TV shows, tabloid magazines, and stuffing their faces with stuff that is going to kill them, and focus a little bit more on being aware of what is going on in the world, in their country, even in their own home.
Great Job America.

When people refer to us as the greatest country in the world, I think what is more correct is that we have the greatest potential for progressive change. But, as expected, the election of President Obama, has revealed just how deep our connection with our stained history goes. Ignorance, bigotry and inequality are all still traits that are associated with our country. And as much progress as we have made, their are still those that are actively trying to keep those values in the forefront of our shared culture. Personally, I love how all of this is revealing what we really are. Perhaps armed with the experience of reality, we, as a people, will take more responsibility in our personal every day lives, to turn this potential greatness of our country kinetic.

I don't know, the last time we had a really smart President, Bill Clinton, Rhodes scholar, we had balanced budgets, we reduced welfare rolls, we had a great economy, we seemed pretty smart then. Damn have we become gullible with our choices for President ever since though, wow. George Bush and Barack Obama, it is hard to believe a country could get that dumb that quick.

Ralph Nader's selfishness insured the election of Bush rather than Gore in 2000, which was a disaster.
Nader's vanity nearly ruined this country, his legacy is one of shame and ruin.

I agree Nader should have dropped out of the race(both times), but I think he holds a stronger legacy than that of shame. I've read he was responsible for giving us safer roads and vehicle standards. He has been a very dedicated congressman and spoke out against Bush on many occasions, but his mistake was letting the support he got from his followers blind him from knowing when to step down. I kno he'll redeem himself. Nader 2012! lol - 2 years ago

RaceBannon:
the facts show that nader had no effect on the election at all. Actually nader was pulling from "democrats" and "republicans". As hollow put it, he was pretty much responsible for seatbealts, food label warning, and variety of things you take for granted. He was actually working with democrats up until they became a corporate party. It was after he called out the democrats for being full of crap that he became this radical and the media did a good job of making the public believe this was the case.
See what I mean thats the kind of thinking thats bad, and heaven forbid anyone ever just "gives up". Imagine the american revolution if they just gave up when the british took new york. Clearly a revolutionary attitude in this country is very dead.

The general public is not at fault here, it is more of the media outlets, that provide the basis for the "beliefs" of what is going on in our country. There is one Cable News Outlet, in particular that, in my opinion, is the major cause of this. John Stewart did a wonderful job of showing how this particular media outlet "reports" it's news, and how inaccurate it actually is.

GodsnLiberals:
Why wouldn't a liberal crusader get "paid"? Does he have to be unemployed to not be a spineless talking head? Bill Maher isn't in hollywood because he says anything for money, but because he has a following with people who relate and enjoy conversations about his controversial ideas. I think Maher is articulate with his ideas, and for you to take discussion and call it "whining" only marginalizes you with the rest of the people who simply hate logical debate.
Just like having a smart president doesn't make us a smart country, having a liberal president does not make us a liberal country. Weed won't be legalized, Gays in the military are still taking shit for putting their lives on the line, and girls are still being taught that condoms are looked down upon by god.
This country has destroyed the concept of "common sense" because more than half of us are afraid to show a bit of humility, and I find that half to be the "bible thumpers" who KNOW because they BELEIVE God meant for this to be the greatest country in the world.
The other "liberal" half simply get thrown under the bus for asking too many questions and trying to expose the mistakes our country has made to try and make sure they don't happen again.

Once again you manage to provide no remote form of information on the subject at hand. I believe your lone goal on this website is to use the word "liberal" negatively as many times as you possibly can. Hopefully you will have something useful to say next time but I doubt it.

It's a great time to be a comedic journalist. So much material to work with. I think the GOP (Gullible Orchestrated Protesters) ought to attack police stations, fire departments, and public schools next. And once this country is conquered, they can go after the ~20 industrialized nations that have Nazi run health care (all of which rank higher than the US in quality by the WHO).

"He has repeatedly said that we live in the greatest country on earth..." Really? Because I seem to recall a stand up in which he said this is NOT the greatest country on earth and people who say that are speaking out of their ass and probably haven't ever been to any other countries.
Anyway, this is my favorite "Sarah Palin says she would never apologize for America. Even though a Gallup poll says 18% of Americans think the sun revolves around the earth. No, they're not stupid. They're interplanetary mavericks."
LOL. But really, 18% of people think the sun revolves around the earth? Were they educated in Texas? (Just kidding...kind of...)

G&L- Who's "you guys"?
biggranny - I wasn't really Texas bashing, just poking fun at their educational system which has a lot of problems when it comes to teaching sciences. A recent review showed that a large majority of Texas public schools were actually skipping over evolution because they thought it was too controversial and their public school system, along with a few other southern states like Kansas, have been the main pushers for creationism to be taught as a scientific alternative to evolution.
