Wendys says it best; a "wife" is a "value meal"( or a "daily special" or a staple, [ as a KID'S MEAL, is illegal in most states])....and it does gain weight. (heh)

Oh ...gay. I thought someone was selling the rights to marry them.
I was like, this is the ultimate case of freedom! Because the state would try to claim that as prostitution but it would be a religious act, so therefore it would fall under freedom of religion!!!
God why aren't people as clever as my demented mind.

Weddings and engagements are used in Western ads because they are common events, and their imagery is universally known to our culture.
Using this imagery to sell wedding related things (gowns, shoes, flowers, etc.) is very appropriate. However, many of these ads are a bit questionable, IMHO. Some are even way out of line. Using weddings to sell Botox or plastic surgery? You've got to be kidding me.
What most of these ads reflect is the importance people place on the wedding, rather than the marriage. Society makes a big deal about having the perfect wedding, no matter the cost. Once the "big day" is over, reality sets in. Maybe if people worried less about going into debt over a party, and more about compatibility, the divorce rate wouldn't be so high.

Exactly! I've never understood the whole mindset of wedding obsession or girls who have been planning their wedding day since they were five.
I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a celebration of an important milestone. But you can do that without going into debt or obsessing over things that don't matter.

So true about the anti-male sexism the article talks about. If women were treated that way in ads, it'd be called sexist!

Not only the ads, take a look at any newsstand and see how many bridal/wedding mags there are! Talk about making a profit.

thats because people obsess over getting married, even though they're probably gonna get divorced soon anyway, and advertisers know that so they use it to their advantage.
i have a friend who got divorced 2 years ago, and he's still paying off the debt from his wedding!
