PETA's New "Save The Whales" Billboard Takes Aim At Fat Women

PETA's new billboard campaign in Florida is raising eyebrows and ire among women and health groups. A drawing on billboards in Jacksonville depicts an obese woman with the phrase, "Save The Whales, Lose The Blubber: Go Vegetarian."

In a press release, PETA stated:

A new PETA billboard campaign that was just launched in Jacksonville reminds people who are struggling to lose weight -- and who want to have enough energy to chase a beach ball -- that going vegetarian can be an effective way to shed those extra pounds that keep them from looking good in a bikini. [....]

Anyone wishing to achieve a hot "beach bod" is reminded that studies show that vegetarians are, on average, about 10 to 20 pounds lighter than meat-eaters. [...]

"Trying to hide your thunder thighs and balloon belly is no day at the beach," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "PETA has a free 'Vegetarian Starter Kit' for people who want to lose pounds while eating as much as they like.

    • Let's see this add with a woman of color and see how many people continue to laugh. Is this ad really OK or is it OK because it is a white woman????? Having said this, grow a thicker skin and ignore PETA like most of us do.

    • It is very irresponsible of PETA pushing there beliefs by degrading us. I for one lost 35lbs in a year just by exercising, i eat the same but less and cut off the fast food but the main thing was to getting my butt off the coach. Peta has no right to bring people's self esteem down. that is why we have so many young girls that become Anorexia by groups like this. Your organization is the worst if people worry about animals then they should donate to there neares SPCA but drop you. You hurt people in every way you can your group is a communist group its your way or nothing.

    • At the very least, they should have included a man in this ad. Tacky advertising? Of course, but it got you to talk about the issue. Going vegetarian allows you to lose pounds? Yeah, it doesn't guarantee it, but it does help. I'm against PETA for a variety of reasons, on the other hand I can appreciate that there's someone trying to get the word out. Should that word be forced onto others? No. It's all about informing. I'm vegetarian because of how inhumanely the animals are treated. Plus, I just never really liked meat to begin with. Do I force my way of life onto other people? No, of course not. However, I should expect that others can respect my decision and not rub it in my face (ex. "I'm gunna go shoot Bambi and eat him for dinner...blah blah blah").

    • I am not surprised but I am a little sickened by this. Anorexia and bulimia are major problems in the US. Billboards like this don't help. How many young women will give into the urge to skip a meal or binge and purge because PETA decided to play into negative stereotypes of fat women in order to promote their message of ethical treatment of animals? Not every fat person is fat because of a poor diet. Thyroid conditions and certain medications can make it very difficult for some people to lose weight no matter how much they control their calories and exercise. Some ethnic groups are also naturally large while others are naturally lean. And how come the billboard only has a fat woman on it? Are fat men exempt from being called whales? PETA is just adding to the already unbelievable pressure on American women to be thin and helping to promote the stereotype that only thin women are beautiful, fat women are disgusting.

This is just another stunt that will just turn more people off rather than win them over. They are always tossing red paint on old women in fur coats. How come they never try that with bikers in leather jackets?

    • They're still calling overweight people "Whales".
Why try to insult people? Why not just tell people that going vegetarian can help you lose weight?

Seriously, people just have a hard-on for shock-and-awe advertisements these days.

    • Eating vegetarian does not guarantee weight loss. Sugar and carbs add to body weight. This is not a way to help people with weight problems! We all need positive reinforcement-not words that are negative towards those who have weight problems!

    • Do they really think this is going to convert obese people to vegetarianism? There's a slim chance that it might, but I highly doubt it.

This Ad just seems like a crappy way to get the point across.

    • Boo Hoo. I'm so sick of people tip-toeing around obese people. If they're not already offended by themselves and medical bills, then they should be. It's not a vanity issue; it's a health issue. We're the fattest country in the world and we all pay for it as a result.

Obesity costs taxpayers almost $100 billion a year. So if you're not going to lose weight for your health, then do it for the rest of us so we can save some money.

    • i think the ad is pretty good. maybe some people will lose some weight because they follow its advice.

the whole PETA kills animals so they're evil spiel is bogus. they don't kill those animals because they want to they do it because they can give these animals a much less painful death than whatever pound they happen to be held in that green lighted euthanizing them in the first place. they're doing a more compassionate thing for these animals in their final hours than many of the people that argue against PETA will ever do in their entire lives.

(many places gas their animals in chambers packed with dozens of animals at once to euthanize them which can take about half an hour sometimes to actually kill them because they can't afford the more humane lethal injection drug)

I dont understand why they would kill them though. they're trying to say that animals are people. animals should be free and not kept as pets. well, animals that are free suffer from pain. you dont see me going around and euthanizing them.
i mean, i understand where you're coming from. completely. they really DO euthanize in a more human manner. but either way, they're acting like hypocrites here. even when they're right.

    • JEEZ could PETA have a worse marketing director? There are plenty of vegetarians that are overweight. Eating meat is not the only way to gain weight, you can cut out the meat but still eat french fries, pizza, just about anything thats deep fried and still high in carbs. This is a terrible ad, can you smell propaganda?

    • It's actually pretty clever as they've given a new meaning to an old AR slogan. It's a bit offensive, but I'm sure that's intentional. Because it works.

    • There's nothing wrong at all with going vegetarian, and there's nothing wrong with being conscious about what you eat. I was raised vegetarian, though I very much enjoy eating meat now.

That said, PETA is an effing asshole and hypocritical organization that "understands" the animal rights extremists and even supported a convicted and admitted firebomber . . . both financially and verbally by calling said firebomber, Rodney Coronado, a "fine young man".

But hey, watch it for yourself (4 parts to the Showtime episode on youtube . . . part 4 talks about how PETA themselves, at their headquarters in Virginia, kill the majority of the animals they take in. So you really want to watch it to the end if you support PETA):
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAt1z_TgPQ4&feature=related

[If Penn & Teller made "any" of this up, they (and possibly Showtime) would be facing a civil lawsuit for slander by PETA . . . so it's factually very much legit.]

      LOL...

"we have no intention of changing our tactics until every last animal on the planet is given more respect than women. (PETA)"

Funny, even though the Onion's satire bit predates this billboard campaign, they are right on the money.

    • Apparently this flew under the radar...

WASHINGTON DC – Today the nonprofit Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF) published documents online showing that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) killed 95 percent of the adoptable pets in its care during 2008. Despite years of public outrage over its euthanasia program, the animal rights group kills an average of 5.8 pets every day at its Norfolk, VA headquarters.

According to public records from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, PETA killed 2,124 pets last year and placed only seven in adoptive homes. Since 1998, a total of 21,339 dogs and cats have died at the hands of PETA workers.

Thats true. I knew a chick in WI who was vegetarian/vegan or something, a huge animal lover and no doubt member of PETA. She and her husband kept way too many pets in their home, always crammed into cages yapping their heads off. They seemed pretty miserable for having such a "good" home.

    • The PETA conflict is difficult: on one hand, they love animals and need to convince other humans to help save them. On the other hand, they hate humans. No wonder they're so shit at marketing themselves.

Now excuse me while I go eat a chicken just to piss off PETA.

    • If an overweight woman is legitimately offended by this billboard than this country is softer than I thought. Good lord everyone, have some self-awareness and a some more responsibility in your actions.
If you're mad at someone telling you that being overweight is a negative thing than something isn't right.

    • When I became vegan I lost 10lbs within two months. I don't think the weightloss was attributed solely to my veganism, but by the other health choices I made along with going veg. Once you're conscious of where your meat and/or animal products come from and how they effect you, you begin to wonder the same thing about everything you consume. I stopped drinking soda, oily foods, caffeine, etc., all of which are vegan friendly. I think that's what they're aiming for with "going veg": being conscious of your health.

Yeap, definitely agree that everyone is being too sensitive towards EVERYTHING and it's getting quite annoying. Especially when it comes to allergies. We have to ban every little thing in the office just because every other person has some kind of allergic reaction. And of course there can't be any losers

    • They're still propagating the idea that fat people are fat because they eat meat. Nonsense.

I knew a fat vegetarian in college. Sure he gave up meat, but take the meat away from a fatty and he'll find a way to get fat.

I've seen him eat. He'd fill up on the veggie burgers while consuming a large bag of potato chips, then he'd wash it down with a nice 32 ounce vegetarian Mountain Dew.

Vegetarian meals like that didn't make him skinny.

Take meat away from fat people and they're still going to get fat.

My dad went vegan and lost 40 pounds effortlessly. It isn't a guarantee, obviously, but it's beneficial, so long as the meat isn't being replaced with other junk.

I mean, giving up sugar is no guarantee either if you replace it with bagels or something. But generally speaking, reducing or eliminating one's meat consumption is a healthy choice.

      It's called marketing 101.

Drinking Bacardi rum, driving a certain type of car, or using Axe body spray (for example) doesn't guarantee you'll be surrounded by fabulous and beautiful people either; though that's the overtly obvious connection being put forth.
