with ignorant remarks such as these, it's no wonder the atheist population continues to grow. people are beginning to open their eyes and see the bullshit more clearly.
also, doesn't the bible say to not judge others? and do unto others as you would want done for you?
i think the pope might have missed out on that lesson in sunday school class

I would have to look at exactly what the pope said as proof of this.
Either way, the Christian/Catholic religion has many people interpreting the bible as dominating over animals/land, and using up as much resources as possible before the 'apocalypse'. People fight wars over religion.
I'm not saying every atheist is great either, but at least some atheists look at morality in a reasonable way, and not because it was in some book!

I voted this article down because I agree!! The article title is misleading. Man's Greed , no matter what religion (or lack of) would be the cause..
However as others have pointed out [ ie:* lucidstone] the Pope does imply those whom do not follow his God are to blame. No Most of Mankind is!The following analysis is from lucidstone
I reprint because I think could not better explain all the drama around this article.
LucidStone states:So what is he saying then? Let's take a look and analyze his words.
What he DOES say in the first sentence is that non-theism is the root cause for abuses against the planet/creation/natural resources.
"Is it not true that inconsiderate use of creation begins where god is marginalized or also where his existence is denied?"
-translation -> "Neglect/abuse of the environment begins with non-theism"detailed parse:
"Is it not true that [(inconsiderate use) = (neglect/abuse)] of [(creation) = (earth/natural resources)] begins [(where God is marginalized or also where his existence is denied) = (non-theism)]?"And then the Pope goes on to say that non-theism is also responsible for materialism and overconsumption.
"If the human creature's relationship with the Creator weakens, matter is reduced to egoistic possession, man becomes the 'final authority', and the objective of existence is reduced to a feverish race to possess the most possible."
-translation-> "If theism weakens, everyday life is reduced to materialism, and the point of life is reduced to overconsumption."detailed parse:
"If [(the human creature's relationship with the Creator) = (theism)] weakens, [(matter) = (everyday life)] is reduced to [(egoistic possession) = (materialism)], man becomes the ‘final authority,’ and the objective of existence is reduced to [(a feverish race to possess the most possible) = (gluttony/overconsumption)]."When you parse the Pope's poetry, he is quite literally saying that non-theism is the source of disregarding the environment and that non-theism is the source of materialism and gluttony/over-consumption.
In essence (according to the Pope):
non-theism (leads to)-> [(neglect/abuse of planet) + (materialism) + (overconsumption) which= (source causes of man made global warming)]So yes, saying that the "Pope blames atheists for global warming" DOES appear to be a bit sensationalist since he did not actually say those words . . .
However, in a very poetic and roundabout way, that is exactly what he is inferring since he IS very much saying that non-theism is the root cause for humans abusing the environment.[If your inclined to disagree, I invite you (or anyone) to review and critique my translation by citing where you might see a flaw . . . or by providing a translation of your own.]

As I sit here living my heathen life style, with my solar water heater, and green building material house, I would thank god, if I believed in a god, that that goof is not the spokes person for all humanity. At least blame the Jews or Protestants and get a religious debate going over the topic. All I can say as a nonbeliever is WTF over and over again in my sinners head.

I recall after hurricane Katrina hit, the Dalai Lama expressed that the disaster was the result of bad karma. This really upset a lot of people and he didn't really understand why.
The word Karma literally translates to "an action". There are good actions, and bad ones. Was the catastrophe the result of bad actions? Yes. As we know now, many people were aware that the levees would not hold, and that it was only a matter of time until something like this happened.
To most people (at least in this country) Karma means "I did something nice, so I will be rewarded for it", or "I was a jerk, and I will pay for that". In Buddhism there is no direct exchange.
We are quick to judge people like the Pope and the Dalai Lama for their "crazy claims", but we usually do so because we lack understanding.

Here's my beef, reposted from the other thread:
"What the pope is saying here hits on what I consider one of the deepest misunderstandings surrounding atheism- that without god, you are somehow disconnected with the earth and humanity. Many people feel this way; just a few days ago another Current user, in the nicest way they could, said they couldn't help thinking atheists are "incomplete". The pope is echoing that type of mentality as well as implying that without belief in god, we can't care about things other than ourselves. That is another atheist stereotype that I personally find offensive because I care a lot about humanity and the environment.
Billions of people listen to and are influenced by the Pope. That is why I care what he is saying- we don't need MORE misunderstanding and intolerance against atheists coming from religious leaders."

He didn't say global warming, but the entire speech was about how humans are ruining the planet. (Link to speech above)
He doesn't "claim atheists are responsible for the destruction of the environment." He suggested that those who are without religion only see resources as a source of personal gain, which is in itslef false.
The Bible clearly states that he made the planet's resources to "be subdued" by man. So saying that atheists are egging on the planet's destruction is the pot calling the kettle black.
Title and spin, bad. Pope's original comment, still bad.

Voted down for an inaccurate title. The excerpt from the speech that is in this articles reads:
“Is it not true that inconsiderate use of creation begins where God is marginalized or also where his existence is denied? If the human creature's relationship with the Creator weakens, matter is reduced to egoistic possession, man becomes the ‘final authority,’ and the objective of existence is reduced to a feverish race to possess the most possible.”
Nowhere does that mention global warming. Perhaps it would blame over-consumption and greed upon godlessness amongst humanity, but nowhere does anything mention global warming. I can't stand sensationalism of this nature.

Opinion pieces like this can't be posted as news--particularly when the title is an opinion, not a fact.
Where the hell does global warming fit in here!?
The author also takes a nice paragraph to just shit-talk the Pope and how "It is a hallmark of the successful Christian leader to live in luxury while preaching charity." You really will not garner any respect for atheists by shit-talking the pope and religious leaders.
I've got some pent up frustrations about Christianity, too, but I don't think I could go as far as to claim that "if blame is to be placed for the current global environmental crisis, it is to be placed squarely upon the Judeo-Christian tradition."
That's just bullshit. Global warming is the result of Christianity as much as hurricane Katrina was caused by homosexuality.
