Skin whitener advertisements labeled racist

retro_Syl
Cosmetic advertisements in Asia are targeting men with blunt campaigns aimed at skin color that one lawmaker labels racist.

"Basically if you need a job you have to have white skin. If you want a good partner, a companion you need white skin and you always seem to get it once you've used the fairness cream. Basically I think it's completely racist and highly objectionable," says Brinda Karat.

Karat is a member of India's Parliament who has made formal complaints about the advertisements to Indian authorities. She says the ads are simply playing on a social stigma that already exists in India.

*Apparently, the evolutionary benefits of having darker skin in that region hasn't occured to the consumers of these products; although, "skin lightening" lotion does help even out the skin tone by decreasing the appearance of scars. What do you guys think? I find it overtly superficial and an ode to the failure of science education around the world.

    • So, some people prefer to paint themselves orange for a night out, and some people prefer to smear chemicals onto their face to try to rid themselves of the amount of melanin they were born with?

      Interesting.

    • Wow. The responses here are kinda funny.
The point isn't that there is a market for the merchandise, the point is the marketing campaign. The fact that most people are gonna always want to be what they're not is fine. To sell them the idea that can't be succesful because they're not someone/thing else should be criminal (whether it's racist or not).

    • well they've been advertising that stuff for women for a long time.
There wasn't a bigger uproar about that. because
many prefferred lighter skin on a woman.(it was accepted that it was ok for men to be darker) only a few people spoke up.(they even have same type of ads for women saying fair is better but its daunting that this type of ad on a man is bringing hyped up attention. because whether woman or man promoting skin lightning is not so good.)

i work part time at an indian store during summer & when women came to ask for the fair creams, i would ask why & detoured them away, i would go into a speech about conditioning but some would buy the fair cream anyway(many were young women before their wedding). the owner told me to keep my politics out of his store, as products were there to be sold. (he didn't fire me because I am the offspring of
his distant relative and family is imporant in south asian culture.)
many younger generations of east indians growing up in America has different attitudes about skin color.

i know that in south asian(indian sub continent) regions, even darker skinned people think that light skin is better, and discriminate other darker skinned people- wierd.
sometimes its subtle. its conditioning from colonialism
i think. some are not even aware of it. also the caste
system plays a part in it.

also a lot of north indians are fair in color, many migrated from eastern euro or mid eastern parts,
some mongolian ancestry(u have to read up the history) where they have lighter skin naturally, those more to the south have darker complexion, there should be nothing wrong with it.
(thats why it pisses me off at times many Indians in the west who have caucasian features passed as caucasians, and were accepted true to their Indo European heritage but those who r a bit darker with prominent ethnic features fell by the wayside. Now many of them claim to be east indian when supposedly east indians are supposed to be dusky exotic brown colored)

as the guy in the video says about making his skin fair-what is wrong with wanting to be beautiful?-
they are conditioned to believe that only light skin is beautiful & that is wrong.
(also notice in the ad that the fair guy seem to be someone who is naturally fair in color-can tell by his features)

i think there is lot of movement toward euro-centric looks or a bleneded looks where many countries want to cross out the line of racial diversity.
they want all to blend in & have a uniform look like
genetic modifications on food(seems society wants to
wipe out diversity & have one standard model popping out to the world.

there is nothing wrong with being fair colored if u are naturally that way, but to say they want a person to be or should be fair because dark is ugly is not cool

    • guys, it's not just in india. it's everywhere!

whitening products are a huge business in korea and i've seen tons of commercials for them. One smoothie company's tagline is (i shit you not) "be white"

It's a problem in jamaica too, where the products are illegal so they buy and use homemade shit that's basically bleach.

basically we (western culture) have sold our ideal of beauty effectively to other cultures which already placed a higher value on lighter skin (see india, korea, japan, etc). the real problem is that there is truth that if you aren't white enough you can't succeed economically. if you're too dark (as a woman) in korea it's common wisdom that you won't be able to marry a good man.

the world is a ridiculous god damn place.

    • So is it racist if someone goes tanning in a tanning bed or if society puts a stigma on being young in California and having tan skin? Just a point...it is a bit racist to say that only certain successes will happen to you based on your skin color....

I was only kidding about the tannning beds...it is India after all

    • it's anything but racist. racist would be, a cream that makes you African, or Chinese. this is the same as tanning, just in the other direction.

there isn't really a demands for these creams you speak of. there isn't the demand. in any society around the world.

imo, what is racist is the conditioning behind the demand for the skin whiteners.

I strongly feel that its not the same thing as tanning.

    • It's everyone's own preference what skin color they want to be. There isn't a "right" or "wrong" color. Whatever you want to make your skin is your own choice.

i was just gonna say that...my girlfriend who is pasty white always wants to be darker...i happen to like her paleness myself tho:-)...so on the other side of the world i dont see the big problem with people wanting to be lighter?...its just different especially coming from our american point of view..but from closer observation we see its not so different..just the other side of the coin...

sir u may be being rhetorical--wanted to put a few sleepy thoughts out there.
melanin determines skin color, many born with different pigmentation as u already know.

for the fair skinned, usually tanning happened naturally. with the sun.
      sun trigger production of melanin.

can stay covered up and stay out of the sun to keep the fair.

but using man made creams to change yr appearance & lighten -why go to all that trouble?
      not so natural. chemical.

as the saying is in society tanning is good for
caucasian people, but tanning is not
so good for the brownified ethnic people
      with prominent ethnic features.

      imho,
of course now they have made "spray" tans
but no ads to say be darker because fair is ugly.
even if a fair person tans. its to bring out a glow, its
to create shadows & conture body parts of mainstream award show attendees & shows up
better on tv as lighting won't wash u out.:-)

with anything moderation, and conditioning about
one color is better is not that good.

but some people in the west always advocate sun block, to cover up, stay fair, protect, keep the fair skin(for health reasons as well & to keep fairness).

why can most people say fair or white skin is better or more beautiful than brown skin, but never brown is more beautiful than white skin (its always oh but brown is beautiful too, or oh but black skin is beautiful too)it cannot be said without a qualifier the same way.
      it isn't said.

    • Sounds like a Queen Elizabeth fetish to me, or maybe Micheal Jackson.

Why is it just the opposite in the US? With tanning salons and artificial skin darkeners.

Both are purely superficial. Consumerism at it's worst.
