Stewie Griffin promotes drug use for the US Government, or so says Venezuela

Image

Venezuelan state TV has been airing clips of Family Guy to show how the US Government promotes drug use. Does that sound crazy or what? The spat seems to have arisen after the US called out Venezuela for undermining U.S. efforts to combat the drug trade in neighboring Colombia.

Checkout the classic Family Guy clip which sparked all this trouble...

    • Even more disturbing, according to the Canadian Press, Venezuela authorities are imposing fines for the networks in that country if they air "Family Guy" (ouch)

    • Great so Chavez's government is trying to blame us for his country trafficing drugs. Last time I checked Hugo that's your job to control. Maybe if you weren't too busy with your image in the media and taking away rights maybe you could get shit done in your country. Sure we pick on Chavez a lot but the fool opens his mouth all the time he's perfect game.

    • Am I the only one who thinks the interior minister has a valid point?
Yes, this bit of information is just one gov't official's statement and it shouldn't be newsworthy, but here we are, talking about it.

He says that we, in America, are encouraged to smoke weed through shows like Family Guy. Uh....yeah....duh..
      Doesn' t that make sense?
Many TV shows and movies have destigmatized marijuana by showing it as it is, for the most part. You have stoners like Otto from The Simpsons, but there has come to be quite the variety, as demonstrated explicitly in Half Baked or implicitly in Dazed and Confused.
However, promoting drug use in general is another story. Most users of other drugs aren't treated so well on TV. Meth, crack, and heroin junkies are usually depicted as junkies, which makes sense.
Most of his points beyond "TV makes us want to smoke weed" are inane but his criticism of our role in this Drug War have quite a bit of legitimacy.

    • There are only a couple of comments worth reading. It's true : Current is often a waste of resources - just as trivial as beauty contests ( and they are more titillating ). Even the guy who's trying to be thoughtful doesn't 'get it'. Who made Venezuela an enemy of the US ? Have they tried to invade lately ? All I saw were news squibs of how they were helping Americans keep from 'freezing in the dark' when energy prices went nuts.
'Enemies' like that I could use more of.
Saying Prohibition is a US problem ? LEAP ( Law Enforcement Against Prohibition ) must be Venezuelan, I guess : they think the same thing.
Weed is a variety of tobacco ... and a weed. Prohibiting that - a medicinal drug and natural painkiller - is an execrcise in job security for drug companies and police.

    • I am from Venezuela, I can assure you that the majority of the people there understand the point and issues shown on that cool episode of the family guy .
Chavez is trying to close down all the radio and tv stations that say anything bad about him, also he is trying to stop freemdom of speech. People in Venezuela protest all the time in the streets.
Chavez is crazy the Venezuelan people don't want him there.

    • He didn't say the US government, just the US.

It's true. We have a culture that promotes drug use, and he cited the cartoon as an example of how it's not Venezuela's fault that the USA is fueling their drug trafficking.

It's the USA's demand that fuels it.

It's a game of "gotcha" politics. He's just trying to rebuke the US government's badmouthing of Venezuela.

And you're a narrow minded instrument of propaganda who is happy to keep this world in the petty state of 'he-said, she-said' rather than advance beyond it.

There is a lot of truth to the statement anyway, just like how shows like Gossip Girl and The Hills promote teenage promiscuity, drug and alcohol use, whilst the parents stand up and blame it all on the kids. It's like having your cake and eating it too. Btw, Chavez didn't say it, had nothing to do with it. And calling him a murderer (even though he isn't) when the US has far more blood on it's hands than any country in history is the pot calling the kettle black.

    • Clearly Chavez has a hard time understanding how things work in countries that don't control all forms of media. Freedom of expression is a long forgotten art in Venezuela.

I mention it b/c I find it fantastic how on this site, all the real problems (the dictatorships, the falsified elections, the human rights violations) of us allies gets ignored.

Simultaneoulsy stupid headlines about our enemies, or every mistake of our enemies is newsworthy, while there is absolutely no focus on what is actually going on in some of those countries. Venezuela is a fantastic example.

    • the irony of all of you is unbelievable.

Publicly funded tv in venezuela says things that the government agrees with, but also that the government disagrees with. It is like saying that the PBS is a mouthpiece for the government in the US, or CBC is a mouthpiece for the government in Canada.

You people are making fun of Chavez (who is not involved in the comment- the station is) while doing the exact same thing as the station, thinking that the station represents the words of the leadership.

I hope this is simple enough to explain your idiodicy. When will the people of the US develop decent critical thinkinking skills?

It was the Interior Minister who made the comment on state-controlled TV. He is representing the government whereas, as far as I know, Seth MacFarlane has no connection to the U.S. government.

Apparently the Venezuelan government isn't into too much freedom of speech.

well to be honest, the american government, isnt into freedom of speech that much either, its just the media is so large and varied that trying to implement a law agaisnt speaking out would be impossible, which is why they try to sneak it in through the patriot act and such, bleeding slowing your rights away, same in the uk too with the terrorism act.

You argued against my perspective that I recognize it as ironic that people are making fun of venezuela as thinking the family guy represents the us government. I recognize it was the interior minister but again the perspectives of the interior minister are not representative of Chavez, or Venezuela which was my point.

Your response to me was to send me an article of a few supporters of Chavez who were involved in riots in front of a private TV station. Again fantastic journalism because Chavez supporters = Chavez. By your logic obscure McCain supporters think persons who are homosexuals should be stoned or abortion doctors are murdering babies are synonomous with McCain. Chavez supporters were also apposed to the station because the station was actively involved in the military coup to unseat him.

In the same way all democrats don't speak for the president, and republican are fiercely divided on all sorts of issues.

The presentation of venezuela in current is absolutely atrotious, and biased. Their have been a few stations not granted their license renewals (after their terms have come up, stations who were more explicitly involved in the coup to unseat the democratically elected government--Similarly in the US their has been a bill in congress for the government to censor the internet during risks to national security.) and their has been a push for more community media which is publicly funded but is no more controlled by the government then the cbc in canada, and is at times quite critical of the government.

95% of the media in venezuela is incredibly hostile to the government (while about 65% of the population favors the government). The problem is as it is in the States is that media is funded and owned by a particular class interest.

That is why current was deemed as necessary. And that is Venezuela is experimenting with ways to help reform the media. However current instead of recognizing this conflict in it's nuances acts as a mouth piece for the us imperial interests.

Maybe some inclusion of the fact that unemployment has been halved, public debt halved, poverty cut in half and extreme poverty cut by 70%. Maybe some support for the growth in cooperatives from about 1500 to 200,000. Maybe some recognition of the community councils. And maybe some respect and coverage of the 65% of Venezuelans that support the government would present some balance on coverage on Venezuela.

      See http://www.zmag.org/znet/viewArticle/18250 (Which way Venezuela?)

      See also http://www.cepr.net/documents/publications/venezuela_2007_07.pdf

Cepr also has some documents on the real fight that is going on in Venezuelan media.

    • We're really past the point of legalization. What this shows is the influence that weed has in our culture, what it has become and people standing up and saying "We don't give a damn if it's not legal"

It's about time we just ignore this ridiculous law and do our own thing, we all know that weed is a great plant that harms nobody, so do what is right, and don't let anyone else tell you it's illegal to have a plant.

    • Before we start paying attention to what venezuela has to say let me tell you something about them..

They are too good to help any of their own neighbouring countries. They need the US currency because their own currency flopped years ago, and they're too snob to admit that they're ashamed of their own banking system.

So the people who have influence there want the locals to stop using the US dollar by slandering the US in the media....So what? our media needs to stop fighting and feeding into the media from other countries. The main problem with US media is that no one in that industry cares about the motives behind the actions taken, they just want to spew another story for their gain and let everyone else get lost in translation.

haha, i guess the venezuelan interior minister = venezuela

why do we make fun of the media in venezuela, while doing the same thing that venezuela did. ever heard something stupid come from the mouth of a member of a political party: does it then represent the party, the country, or the president.

this is only news because it was a stupid statement coming from one of the countries that has stood up to US imperialism and also happens to have oil.
