STUDENT PUNISHED FOR SPAGHETTI BELIEFS

Image
AndreaKnoll
A student has been suspended from school in America for coming to class dressed as a pirate. But the disciplinary action has provoked controversy – because the student says that the ban violates his rights, as the pirate costume is part of his religion.

Bryan Killian says that he follows the Pastafarian religion, and that as a crucial part of his faith, he must wear ‘full pirate regalia’ as prescribed in the holy texts of Pastafarianism.
The school, however, say that his pirate garb was disruptive.

Pastafarians follow the Flying Spaghetti Monster (pictured), and believe that the world was created by the touch of his noodly appendage. Furthermore, they acknowledge pirates as being ‘absolute divine beings’, and stress that the worldwide decline in the number of pirates has directly led to global warming.

You're not still under the impression that "Pastafarians" really believe that there's a flying clump of spaghetti with meatballs that is governing our lives, right?

    • I'm a bit conflicted here. If it were a real religion I'd be on his side but it's obviously fake. The only people who "celebrate" it are anti-religious people. I don't see how you can have a religion based on the notion that there is no religion.

    • If THIS is the case...
Then, I submit my belief in the "Shirleytarian" church.
ALL loyal Shirleytarians MUST dress exactly like Shirley Temple: frilly dresses with frills and bows, frilly white anklets and black patent leather mary jane tap shoes! This "uniform" WILL be worn by BOTH SEXES ALL DAY--EVERY DAY--even while bathing AND swimming!
We curl our hair EVERY NIGHT before retiring for slumber...arise every morning and sing our official hymn "On The Good Ship Lollipop".
All loyal Shirleytarians MUST obey the rules set forth in the Sacred Gospel Of The Holy Lollipop!

      To answer your question--
      It Doesn't!
I posted that to demonstrate just how Stupid people can be.
If ANYONE is going to actually start an embacillic religion like Pastafarianism--and what more, get OTHER PEOPLE to buy into the stupidity--then it just shows how low our level of humanic intelligence has slumped!

Obviously this is all a joke, I was being facetious, but although I was joking, I was trying to make a point. Which was to exemplify the difference between A TRUE Functional SPIRITUAL SYSTEM like Buddhism and your (even if it was a joke) fictional Shirleytariansm as well as Pastafarianism. Spiritual Systems are real, and they work, This entire post proves nothing, except how disconnected people have become from the spiritual. I'm not endorsing any religion, but I am endorsing the reality of the human spirit and the authenticity of spiritual reformation which can be aided by spiritual systems with coherent techniques. Shirleytarianism could be made functional if you studied the human condition and created a system by which people could reform themselves, that's what separates applicable Systems from Fictional Systems like Pastafarianism and Shirleytarianism. Human intelligence has slumped along with spiritual awareness.

      Have a good day :)

If the issue is ongoing, and some folks are simply not even aware that the issue EXISTS, the "Issue" is current.
Also, most philosophical issues and religious discourse is always "current". Platonism is not WRONG, Christ has not been accepted as the universal savior, and PMS may or may not justify murder. Some things remain "in play" pretty much in perpetuity. Platonism I think should have "won" long ago. Just me these days I think though.

rem, I agree that the philosophy and questions this situation had raised are still relevant, but then why not have a post based around that? This "news" is from 2 years ago and I don't think most people realize that.

Rem, who said that Platonism is wrong? I agree with you, But Plato was a Universalist, and he preached that with reason we could engage with the divine, Jesus message was very similar, and yes theologically Jesus has been accepted as a ''universal savior'', and I have too.... Muslims accept this notion, Hindus believe that he is a Bodhisattva, one who enlightens. People have a very skewed understanding of pure Christianity, there is a distinction between the message of Christ and the religion known as ''Christianity'', the difference is, Christians propagate the message of Worship, yet Jesus never said to worship him, he said ''follow me''. I believe that both The Message of Plato with his doctrine of divine geometry and the oneness of all life can exist in harmony with the message of Christ and Salvation.

    • Pirates and Pasta! The freebooters choice!-

Pastafarianism gained wide attention when its key prophet, Bobby Henderson, wrote to the Kansas School Board during the height of the controversy over 'Intelligent Design' being taught in science classes. His letter, also published on his website, demanded equal time be given to the teachings of the Flying Spaghetti Monster as was given to ID and evolutionary theory.

Since then, the Flying Spaghetti Monster has gained countless followers worldwide, although there are those who remain spagnostic.

The school, in North Buncombe, North Carolina, remains adamant that their decision to suspend Killian for a day has nothing to do with his religion, and quite a lot to do with his repeated refusal to heed warnings against wearing pirate .

    • Pastafarians often take this sort of thing very seriously. although I and many of us take this as a comical thing.. the statement Pastafarians are making is very meaningful if you understand it. bless his noodley appendage.

    • That kid is rad, FSM will rain spaghetti sauce on all the non believers.

How is suspension even a punishment? He's probably gonna be home playing xbox just because his prick of a teacher doesn't have a sense of humor.

    • This just goes to show how All Religions are insanity. And that is the point of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

In a land where church and state are separate and people can choose to believe in whatever they want, even to take the rational view of non-belief; We sure do have a lack of respect for other peoples beliefs, especially when it doesn't agree with our own set of world beliefs.

      How typically hypocritical!

This kid should sue the school for discrimination. I'd bet he would win too!

No, it's not worth it. No matter how many non-religious or religious people defend religion, you shit heads are going to look down your lengthening noses at them and confidently deem them insane.

This kid should be expelled for being an asshole.

Insanity indeed. The kid should sue the school for discrimination! I'd bet he would win too. :)

Seriously, you all are taking this way too seriously LOL, I get the kids point, and it's a noble protest indeed. If you read my quote correctly you would have noticed that I said ''This'' Is Insanity'' Not ''He is Insane''...... the mere fact that we have to argue about religious beliefs is insane, that's my point, A plate of spaghetti and meat balls for everyone on the House! Current is paying for it LOL AHHAHHAHA

I think we should drop with the pretenses and start rounding up religious people and put them all in those nasty Halliburton FEMA camps. Believing in invisible entities is in the DSM-!V and is considered psychotic, its called schizophrenia. All these mentally ill people should be institutionalized so the rest of the people who aren't wasting their consciousnesses on unprovable dogmas, can get on with the business of cleaning up the planet and making this a peaceful place to live.
