Sarah Silverman: Sell the Vatican-feed the world! (Video)

locutus
Sell the Vatican-feed the world! Sarah Silverman makes a powerful proposal to end world hunger by selling the Vatican. Silverman, estimating the Vatican's worth at 500 billion dollars, makes a powerful argument for the Pope to become a caped crusader. By selling the Vatican, and using the profits to feed the poor, the Pope could be a hero. As a bonus, Silverman promises the Pope that "any involvement in the Holocaust—bygones."

What a deal! How could the Pope refuse?

Catholics are the ones who claim to be about helping the meek and poor.( or did you forget jesus' teaching)
She's only making a joke because everyone knows that the pope would never give up his castle to feed starving children. That would be something a holy person would do.

      And you know this;it is why your mad;
you know jesus WOULD sell his city sized mansion for diseased kids.

    • Jesus did say that "a rich man would have a harder time finding his way into heaven than a camel finding a needle in the desert".

    • The Vatican and its absurd opulence is what turned me off from Catholicism. I had been raised Catholic but when I went to the Vatican I was disgusted. The amount of priceless art that they house and own is disturbing. It is not a tourist destination it is an indictment of the corruption of medieval Catholicism and how the rich (in indulgences) and the poor were forced to pay for the art and luxuries of corrupt bishops and popes. And an indictment of the current state of the religion.

Vow of poverty my ass. I also hear that the nuns are expected to do all the housework while the religious men do their holy work. Vomit in my mouth.

Organized religion usually sucks the big one. If you actually care about your neighbour, get involved with an organization actually doing something to help people. Catholicism aggravates the problem of poverty by its stance against family planning and contraception. I have seen churches doing some good work, but its rare and far between. Most are too concerned with whether their youth are having sex.

And your first response is violence , torture , killing...and even worst, asking other people to do it,all because of a diffrence of opinion! So sad. I, for my part, wish you well .

    • Nice work Sarah. Though 90% of the world would likely support the idea, that remaining 10% of crazy Bible Tumpin cannot come up with a single creative thought "because it's not in the bible" wackos would never even entertain the idea. Unforutunately they are the dipshits who have scared, terrorized, killed, bribed, lied and have broken every commandment there is to win their way into our political systems and have themselves become the #1 roadblock for world progress.

    • Freecrack - The Vatican or $500 Billion Dollar Resource" is already feeding hungry people. Aid to Palestine is being controlled and limited by Israel. There is so much in the World that can help people, if it were not for oppressive people in power preventing the aid from getting to where it needs to go.

    • we could also feed people if we stopped aid to palastine too
      or decreased our military
being that the vaticans worth is 500 billion why would she mention anything about 3 billion?
if you see a problem that requires financing to fix wouldnt the 500 dollar resource matter more and be more usefull than a 3 dollar one?

    • The Catholic Church feeds more people and has done more to end World Hunger than Sarah Silverman could ever hope to. There is plenty of food this planet and we are capable of easily feeding a Global Population double the current size. The way to end world hunger is to get rid of all of the Dictatorships and replace them with Representative Governments. If you want to look at who is feeding the starving people, look at Religios Organizations. Many people starve because of the actions of Dictators. Stalin created a massive famine in the Ukraine. Chairman Mao killed more people than Hitler and Stalin combined by starvation. It baffles me how anyone could take what Sarah Silverman had said seriously. I wonder why she didn't say "We can feed starving people instead of giving over 3 Billion Dollars a year to Israel."

    • Who the fuck really cares if organized religions exist or not? They bother nobody and for the most part do good for everyone else. Hell even scientology does good. Yes there are negatives as well but for the most part religion benefits more people than it hurts.

    • I have never been a supporter of organized religion in general they are into power over those they have brainwashed.Religion has directly caused many of our wars.you can be spritual without the organization and brainwashing. The catholic chruch is one of the worst and all the plunder in vatican hands, and its buildings together are worth more like a trillion dollars! I agree with susan lets seize and sell but all the churches and church buildings, and use all that lovely money to take care of people! Throw the pope and the cardinals out in the street! Without organized religion we'd be a lot better off!

christian invasion is a crusade but saddam hussien was a despot. its alot easier to take negativety from within, from outside it makes people defensive.

    • She was obviously TRYING to be hypocritical. She was using satire and sarcasm. It was on purpose.
The only reason she chose the Christian religion, is because its the most wide spread, and thus relatable to the majority of the population. She could have easily chosen Judism, Islam, or Hinduism, but the point of her
"announcement" was to convey how hypocritical the human race is... specifically in regards to religion.
For an example of what she was trying to construe...
      Just read the other comments....

    • the point wich sarah understands but doesnt fully get is all religion is riddled with the same hypocracy. having a member of one faith point it out in another only seves to create division instead of resolution.
jews spent more on the creation of israel and its grand architecture then helping people
christians will spend millions of dollars fighting science instead of providing charity
better a mosk be gold plated than people having water.
the catholics are cut from the same hypocritical clothe.

btw google how much charity comes from hollywood and then check how many donors(what percentage) are from jews. you like spreading racial hate so much that even when the facts contradict you still make hatefull claims?

    • Guess what happens when all of the $500 billion is eaten? You then have more poor people needing twice as much because they refuse to practice moderation and birth control while being being fed. Even China understands this basic concept.
Otherwise, I say sell the Vatican and good riddance.

    • Great... the hypocrisy of the gold gilded Vatican certainly would feed many... But when you're done with that Ms. Silverman, go after all the other religions including your own taking advantage of people and you may look credible here instead of just using starving people to appease your own biases.

2 sets of questions for you 'JanforGore':

      1) Are you suggesting that Sarah is taking advantage of people? If so, then how?

      2) What biases do you believe that Sarah has? How do you know that she has them? How is she appeasing them?

I'm not sure what the purpose of your comments were. However, I'm pretty sure that they don't serve the purpose of directly objecting to her idea.

Answer to question one: Yes. If you can't see how you don't want to.

Answer to question two: This video. Or are you telling me this was all for fun?
As for the purpose of my comment it was to give feedback like everyone else. What was the purpose of yours?
The food crisis taking place on our planet is serious business to me. So sorry if her mockery of it regarding the starving people "she wants out of her apartment" for laughs didn't impress me.

I like her idea but why stop at the Vatican? Why not all the religions in the world? I know several multimillion dollar televangelists who rake in some serious dough that could be liquidated to feed the world.

And while we are on this fire sale of religious artifacts, buildings, ranches, shopping centers, and various other wholely owned corporate entities belonging to religions, lets start taxing them too, all their contributions are income and should be taxed to pay for the charity work they should be doing on their own. God knows the corruption that exists in many of these religions that people go on and on about, the excesses, the private jets, the mansions, the jewelry that these profiteers of faith indulge in.
