At a news conference, Sheriff Jim Alderden said: "They put on a very good show for us, and we bought it."
The balloon would not have been able to carry the weight of six-year-old Falcon Heener, he added.
Sheriff Alerden has already said Richard Heene and his wife will face charges.

another interesting fact is that if the boy was in fact in the balloon he would be dead. With the balloon being filled with helium and being in the air for over an hour, the boys lungs would've been filled with helium and they would've found a dead body inside

I am not convinced they are guilty. I want to see real evidence. Kids say many things and innocent lives may suffer if the only evidence is the choice of words by a 6 year old taken out of context.

Personally I would call 911 but under the stress I have no idea what I would really do. May be they where thinking that the better response would be tv station with the access to the helicopter and with a quick response to sensation there may be more attention to find their son quicker.
Now in regards to “elaborate deceptions”… Exactly the point a 6 year old can not handle lies… If this family is guilty of desire for publicity why would they share that with a 6 year old? On the other hand, young children are very susceptible to power of suggestion and these techniques are often employed by prosecution.
