I don't think they are inherently less funny...they just appreciate a different kind of funny; which tends to be more sophisticated and adventurous in scope for the most part. This idea is generally reflected in the comedies they have produced post-Python, like Faulty Towers, Are You Being Served, Father Ted, Black Adder, The Young Ones and so on.

Indeed, there's been a long history of ground breaking comedies in the UK that has strongly influenced writers, actors, and producers in the US and Canada. If it wasn't for Peter Cook's and Dudley Moore's Over The Edge (...which cracked open the door), or Python (...which kicked it right down), organizations like The Second City or, by extension SNL would've had a much tougher time finding their respective voices.

Then there is the enigma that is Benny Hill, but that's a debate for a later time...

    • You know, I just realized the classic "Dead Parrot Sketch" is still roughly one-hundred times more interesting than what is on CNN right now (...I'm watching, against my will, a recap of the whole "Balloon Boy" fiasco).

That says something about where we're going as a society.

    • This thread is officially Not Funny. Here I've come to expect some pithy and clever comments and whatnot, and so far I've been mostly disappointed. So far this is just been Too Silly.

      Start over.

“And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it.”

Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our *four*...no... *Amongst* our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again.

      :D
