Why it’s NOT necessary to wear a bra

Image
espl4
According to the survey, over 90% of North American women wear a bra, many without ever asking why. While some believe they do it for their breasts’ sake, other do it simply because of cultural reasons as going braless (or bra free) is often considered inappropriate or kind of breaking the social rules of dress code.

    • I happen to love my bra, especially my padded bra. I just think it's no one business but my own for people to know I am cold or turned on.

    • Hey, take a look at pictures of women from the early 1900's. Look at them at twenty, thirty, forty years old . then tell me why I shouldn't wear a bra.
At 30 years old those ladies breasts are sagging down to their waists. No way I'm I letting that happen.
You find yourself a good looking but supportive bra and you'll look good for a long time.
Olga used to make great minimizers in a lot of odd sizes, with excellent support yet looked great under a nice t-shirt. If you were born wiyh nice breasts take care of them and you and your significant other will be glad you did.

I understand where you're coming from, however the argument for going braless is a lot more complex than "oh noes saggy boobs! Woe is me!". I don't mean to mock you but it really goes beyond esthetics.

If you are talking about size and/or heavy breasts(fibrocystic disease) I'm well aware of the need for multiple reasons.
I wore a 32 D or DD when I was younger. No none knew what fibrocystic breast disease was. I knew, just didn't know the name or the cause.
Those things were like carrying two newborns around.
A very good support, underwire minimizer was a must. I still have indentations in my shoulders from carrying those around! I can't imagine why females want to increase breast size because they cause multiple problems. If I could have I would have happily given some away to a less endowed female.
When FCBD was discovered: I ask the breast doctor where to get a good bra that would stop my breasts from bouncing up and hitting me in the face if I walked at a fast pace!!!!LOL.He was speechless. At that time all the stores sold those see-thru french bras that didn't do the job.
The density is what caused the weight of my breasts.
I am happily in a 32C minimizer support bra.(much easier but still hard to find.) I feel so much more balanced, with less back strain!

    • I wear a bra for the same reason why guys generally wear underwear when wearing jeans...things rub, not in a good way.....and friction is often not a good thing outside of the bedroom.

    • I think that if you have a "C" or bigger your have to wear a bra. Women with big boobs get horrible back pains if they are wearing a bra that doesn't fit right. Imagine if they weren't wearing a bra at all.

    • Actually , it has been my experience that if you have a "C" or above , gravity will eventually prevail . Breast feeding is also a big factor . In many cultures this is expected , and seen as life as it should be . In this culture we are pressured to look unnatural and fake . Not unlike the twisted perception of the anorexic who sees herself as fat , however thin she is . I do not believe it is good for the circulation . Although I have found a little support during athletic endeavors to be helpful . Sports bras are not so bad .

    • The idea that brassieres are some kind of oppressive device is idiotic. The more bra knowledge, the better and breast-able the world will be. Far too few women, for instance, seem to be aware of sports bras...one of the supreme 20th century inventions. They're only oppressive if it's a bad fit.

    • So guys have been labeled sexist all this time for wanting to get women out of their clothing and now the truth comes out: guys were just trying to prevent breast cancer. Something in our primitive man-brains just intuitively knew that bras are unnatural.

      Seriously, though:
Civilizations all over the world lasted a long time before the bra, I wonder how they managed. Its good to see that women have options. Women should do as they please with their bodies, and ta-ta's, and everything else that is theirs and nobody else's.

I'll let cracked.com take care of this one.

      "Mary Phelps Jacob (1892-1970)

      Invented:

      The bra.

      Lived to See:

"Bra-burning" feminists calling it a symbol of oppression.

      EUREKA!

In 1910, Mary Phelps Jacob was struggling with her outfit, specifically with the whalebone corset that was showing through her sheer evening gown and out over the neckline. Picture a life jacket under a one-piece bathing suit and you can see just how not hot this must have been.

Displaying oodles of pluck and daring that's even more exciting once we realize she was probably topless at this point, Jacob refused to wear the corset, demanded that her chaperon bring her two handkerchiefs, a needle and some thread, and stitched together what she would call the "backless brassiere." Her friends gathered around her, inquiring excitedly about the new accessory, and soon all the ladies were back in the dressing room, giggling, tearing off their corsets and... oh, wait, that was actually a scene from Naughty Debutantes on Cinemax. Sorry.

In 1914, after years of selling the garments to her circle of friends, Jacob applied for and received the first-ever patent in the newly created category of "brassieres." The way women's boobs dressed changed forever.

Considering how incredibly freeing the brassiere she created was in comparison with the corset, Jacob must have been shocked that, by the time of her death in 1970, it was seen by feminists as a symbol of oppression, with a burning bra the classic image of women's liberation protests (and it was just an image, the actual burning of the bras never happened).

Even without the actual flames, the bra itself was socially charged, with the choice of whether to wear one being one of the simplest and most visible ways (well, depending on the temperature) that a woman could display her political views.

Knowing Mary Phelps Jacob (who lived one of the most interesting lives ever) been born 60 years later, there is no doubt that she would have gone braless. Hell, she most likely considered it back in 1910, except that it was probably a capital offense at that point."

Here's the article if you want to read it.

    • thank goodness my bra was starting to chafe... and people were looking at me funny.

we need to find away to lessen this stigma of bra free and female toplessness... they are boobies!... not something disgusting to be scoffed at or arrested for showing.

You started out just fine but as far as I'm concerned I don't want other women's tits showed in my face especially first thing in the morning. & look at the gals that have to breast feed in public. They simply cant throw an item of cloathing over themselves.

I agree with Darevalo, they're just boobs! I've seen this debate many times over, especially concerning women who beast-feed in public, so I'm not gonna get into it, but I definetly think that boobs shouldn't be treated like some kind of handicap or birth defect.

How come men don't cover their chests? What's so awful about mammary glands? It's not like they're THAT delicate. Just sayin'...

    • "...often considered inappropriate or kind of breaking the social rules of dress code. "

In other words it makes strange men stare and grin vacantly. Personally I view this as a good thing, but I am a strange man.

This article is full of other stupid science too.

It makes some other stupid points. Bras that fit badly cause discomfort for one (duh). But the big one and what seems to e the impetus for the article is a study that states that women who wear bras 24 hours a day have a higher breast cancer rate. What it does not say is that women who wear bras 24 hours a day generally do so because they have much larger than average breasts to the point they need to keep their doggies corralled at all times. That a woman with more breast tissue would have a higher probability of cancer is completely reasonable.

This is an all around bad article.

somehow I'm not surprised after you described yourself a strange man. I'm not sure about breast size & cancer incidence. They even report men with breast cancer. They do link dietery intake of fat though. You really should look up Carolyn Gillis if you want your response not to sound stupid.

If you find a man wearing a bra 24 hours a day he's likely to have other problems. My thought was that if I didn't want my response to sound stupid I wouldn't have made the strange man boob joke. I'm only talking about the article itself, not the study as a whole. My problem isn't with the study it's with the assumptions the article is making which seem like over reaching to me.

    • Underclothes help to keep over-clothes sweat and body-odour free. One of the main reasons for a bra in clothing is to make a woman's figure look a certain way. In reality ALL clothes are unnecessary, but if you ARE going to wear them there's no reason you should be a stupid blob about it. This article is pointless.

    • Its not necessary to always wear a bra, but it is necessary to wear a bra most of the time or else you will have ridiculously saggy boobs before you are 30. I know this from several saggy boobed "always braless" friends.

    • thecoyote23:

Actually, studies show that women who wear bras are no less prone to sagging than women who don't. In fact, some studies indicate that wearing a bra could cause sagging.

But if you really think that some cloth and elastic and an underwire could be just the tool we need to fight gravity....

Aside from that, some of us girls who are 'blessed' with larger than average breasts will just NEVER have perky boobs no matter what we do.

I have worn a bra every day since I developed breasts, and when I take it off, they point nearly to the floor. That's the curse of having DD's.
