Bill Maher, hero defending us regarding 'discussion' of vaccines, predictably called Scientologist.

When the American Sickness, Death and Media Conglomeration (Fox, CNN and yes, MSNBC) doesn't have answers, they call you names.

They say you are a Scientologist, libtard or a left wing nut extremist, to discredit what you say.

My hope lies with the majority of people polled on HBO site and our college students, who are not getting vaccines and not going along with the meme, that it is safe and effective. We know this is put out by groups who are profiting from conjuring sickness and fear. They are getting away with this, to a degree.

Maybe some kind of "Natural" Selection will favor rational, scientific people, after all, in a passive manner.

As theirs are falling over, before our eyes, on the way to Mall Buffets, with walkers and five to ten types of medication. That segment of our species are less healthy, the more they listen to Fox and other media "noise." They get fatter and fatter and more and more medications, operations, allergies, walkers and ailments.

These direct-to-consumer drug ads are shameful and only allowed in the USA and New Zealand. Our family can hardly stand to watch any of the stations except a periodic check with the sound down to see the ticker tape. Our "news" system is nothing more than informercials for drugs that are often deathly dangerous. I often will put on Progressive Radio while I have the TV on mute.

Our family does watch MSNC as well as regional NECN and enjoy much of the quality broadcasting but wince when we are bombarded with drug information and ads from Dr. Nancy and so take everything with a grain of salt. This should not be an issue in an open society. 'True News' should be strictly regulated to ban these types of sponsorships that warp our perspective. Fox and friends and Glenn Beck should not be called 'True News' because impressionable people believe this.

Keep those health workers with their flu shots away.

    • i wasnt going to get the vaccine for my kids, but when kids became the number one dying from swine flu, I caved. Whether it is true or not, I dont know. But I do know that my babies come before my silly media fears, and i also know that I did not have to pay one penny for the vaccine for my kids, because they are at risk. If I were to get it, i would have to pay. But not for kids. TO anyone paying for this shit: There is undoubtedly somewhere you can go to get it for free. Now the evil capitalistic conglomerates are profiting not on fear, but laziness. Do the research! Find the free vaccine!

"Bill has a great show on which he raises issues that i may or may not agree...but he makes me think."

this is the MOST important sentence in this whole thread, because Maher is a Messenger, don't kill the messenger, he makes you THINK. remember critical thinking in school?

If some of you ignorant haters realized that you're lucky enough to have a bright person show you another angle on things, a devil's advocate, you'd appreciate him for the genius he is, you don't have to agree w/ him ON EVERY TOPIC, but don't hate him personally.

You can dislike someone's opinion, but don't hate them, unless their last name is Bush or Cheney.

my biggest disappointment was watching his season finale with Baldwin and Belzer, who i reallly want to hear from, and instead he gives so much air time to Garry Shandling, while up on things, had to be totatally 'impaired', one way or the other, but Maher still time which should have been given to Baldwin, Belzer.
i think a lousy way to end the season.

    • Half of GPs refuse swine flu vaccine over testing fears | Mail OnlineUp to half of family doctors do not want to be vaccinated against swine flu.
GPs will be first in the line for the jabs when they become available but many will decline, even though they will be offering the vaccine to their patients.
More than two thirds of those who will turn the jab down believe it has not been tested enough. Most also believe the flu has turned out to be so mild in the vast majority of cases that the vaccine is not needed.
Last night Government experts criticised GPs who decide not to have the jab, saying they will put vulnerable patients needlessly at risk.
A week ago, a poll of nurses showed that a third would turn down the opportunity of being vaccinated against swine flu.
News that medics are unconvinced by the need for a vaccine will cause grave concern to patients who will be invited for the jab over the next few months.
A poll of doctors for Pulse magazine found that 49 per cent would reject the vaccine with 9 per cent undecided.
A separate survey for GP magazine found that 29 per cent would definitely opt out of having the jab, while a further 29 per cent were unsure. Just 41 per cent said they would definitely have the jab.
Of those who said they did not want to jab, 71 per cent said it was because of safety concerns.
Richard Hoey, editor of Pulse, said: 'The medical profession has yet to be convinced by the Government's whole approach to swine flu, with most GPs now feeling that the Department of Health overreacted in its policy on blanket use of Tamiflu.
'Inevitably, that has coloured feelings about the planned immunisation campaign.
'The view among many doctors is that the Government hasn't yet made its case for why such a huge vaccination programme needs to be rushed in for what seems to be an unusually mild illness.'
But Professor David Salisbury, the Department of Health's director of immunisation, told GP magazine that frontline health workers had a duty to themselves regarding vaccination.
'They have a duty to their patients not to infect their patients and they have a duty to their families,' he said.
The Pulse survey questioned 15 doctors, while GP spoke to 216.
The poll raised further questions over the Government's planned mass vaccination programme. The jab, currently being processed, will be fast tracked and will not be fully tested before it is administered to patients.
There are also concerns the jab can spark cases of Guillain Barre Syndrome, which can lead to paralysis and even death.
A mass swine flu vaccination programme in the U.S. in 1976 caused far more deaths than the disease it was designed to combat, and the Health Protection Agency watchdog has asked doctors to look out for cases of GBS when the vaccinations begin.
Earlier this month, Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson announced that the jab will be given to people in high-risk groups, such as those with asthma or diabetes, as well as health workers such as GPs and nurses.
Some 14million people will be covered by the first wave of the vaccination programme, with everyone else following over the next few months.
The BMA is still negotiating with doctors over how they should be paid to give out the jabs. The union is demanding £7 for every injection.
A spokesman for the BMA said: 'The new vaccine has been thoroughly tested and we believe it should provide good protection against swine flu.
'It is important that doctors are among the first to be offered the vaccine as it will not only protect them but the patients they care for.
However, doctors like all individuals have the right to decide whether they are vaccinated or not.'

    • people, this is america. our economy is fueled by greed. if you believe what you see on tv, your dumb. if your not going to be cautious and constantly skeptical of corporations(even healthcare) then you need to move to another country...canada perhaps. you cant hate a company for trying to make money....legally. greed is the king of all motivators, and is the reason america is the largest economy in the world. let corporations be greedy...legally. dont buy their product if you dont like them, get your friends to not to buy their product by educating them, and then the corporation will starve to death....stop complaining about capitolism...its the best system in the world, even though it sucks.

He's one of most intelligent, honest, truthful, and brave people on TV or in this country, hands down. For having the balls to challenge anyone one, or anything, NOT for the goal of challenging, but in the pursuit of facts of the truth.

Of course I disagree with him sometimes, or he may take it too far, but that's only about 5%, he's 95% pure, ya'll douche bags have nothing on him. He's a warrior of truth.

If you don't appreciate his clear acumen, then you must be undereducated, uneducated, unintelligent, ignorant, and/or a pure hater!

Bill Maher is unique and a brave truth spitter!

most vaccines are needed and cause little if any dangerous side-effects.....the daily drugs we take are much more an issue.

    • Here is an idea. Stop spewing this anti scientific bullshit. It was wrong when it came from the right. It is more wrong and harmful coming from the left. This is already at a pandemic state. It and the seasonal flu are dangerous enough more than 30,000 people die of influenza every year. Perhaps this generation is more jaded but thank God we have the privilege of that skepticism. Those that lived before the time of Salk and the amazing progress that has followed did not and they had the specter of disease hovering about them like an omnipresent grim reaper. This vaccine is safe. The government is not out to kill you, you know what is? A virus that has claimed hundreds of lives and has the potential to claim scores of thousands more.

-perhaps this virus would not exist if a)there weren't so many damn humans on this beautiful planet b)we didn't abuse/kill/enslave livestock like "swine"
-perhaps we deserve it for our ignorance and imbalance of nature and this planet.

what part of that is wrong? noooooooooooone!

    • Of course people are corrupt and the US is making money off of these vaccines because they know we are scared. People die from the flu every year just the same they die from the H1N1 and the media is feeding our fear just like they have always done before. I know all this flu talk has been made way bigger than it actually is and as an individual, I trust my body enough to fight off different kinds of viruses and don't necessarily feel the need to get myself vaccinated. BUT as a pregnant woman, mother of a two year old, and wife, I cannot afford to take that chance. So, I guess the US gets their money.

    • Ashley_Rainsbarger:

These vaccines are being distributed in most areas free of charge. When there is a charge it is a nominal administrative fee. Hospitals are currently experiencing a volume of about 300 to 400 percent more than average in several states due to this pandemic and the government is trying to stem that tide. If there are people manipulating fear for political gain here, it is libretarians and people on the far left not anyone in the center just trying to do their job so more people aren't affected. If we get the vaccine and nip this in the bud so no more pregnant women or children die from the disease than it is money well spent and that fear is nothing compared to the grief of losing a child or mother and you know that. I'm not trying to be insensitive or mean. I just think you've made the right decision and I don't think you need to feel guilty or skeptical about it.

Are you a physician. Have you been trained in medicine? Are you an epidemiologist. No? Than please shut the fuck up and leave your decision as a personal one rather than a public display of ignorance that might contribute to someone else contracting H1n1. Those at risk or with those most at risk within their home should almost certainly be inoculated. Its clear science and its the humane and practical thing to do. Urging otherwise is irresponsible.

Ocanada, Chill out and STOP assuming things! the person is simply stating that due to a "natural" and nutrtious diet, they have been healthy, they didn't say "don't take the vaccine". and they are just making you ? things, like vaccine and medical safety. so are you a fucking doctor or epidemiologist, no, so YOU shut the fuck up, same argument can be made for yourself. See how easy that is, but you bring up a good point, that the vaccine could be safe, and might be needed to combat this, i don't know, like i said, i'm neutral on it.

I think if you DON'T believe in evolution, you should NOT be able to take the vaccine, cause both are science, and you're either w/ science, or NOT. Don't like 50% of America disbelief Evolution, instead they go w/ the invisible guy in the sky who never shows up? Ya, we're a brilliant country?!

Look, its my opinion which I have the right to as much as Bill Maher. I can say something inflammatory if it serves my purposes the same way he can. He cares more about ratings and opinions than facts so to me he's as milder version of media potentates like Hannity or O'Riley. Maher is the type who simply discounts others opinions wholesale on his show and I have the right to deem that offputting and because of the manner it is often done disingenuous. On this issue he is just as guilty of the thing he derided the most on the right, anti scientific thought based on fear and misunderstanding of a complex life or death policy matter.

OCanada, ya, you're entitled to you're opinion.

He's for the truth and plays devil's advocate, what' wrong w/ that. He don't care about rating, he's on HBO. He's a deep and complex thinker, who goes against the main stream. He deserves gallons of credit.

Although on this issue, I think he may be wrong (he's human, he's not perfect), I'm neutral on it. But he DOES have a point, that if you eat healthy, and take care of yourself, you will not be as sick and have a stronger immune system, what part of that is wrong? 2 different issues.

Bill Maher is a fucking genius who has the balls to question the establishment and tell it like it is. There fore he's a noble citizen. I've watched about 100 of his shows, and he's 90% right on things. People just hate him cause he's? Cocky? I don't know.

"if you eat healthy, and take care of yourself, you will not be as sick and have a stronger immune system, what part of that is wrong?"

several things are wrong with that.

      1. we live in an age of rampant pollution, our air, our water, our food is all being polluted, so eating healthy isn't enough, or as much of an option for those who are surviving on minimum wage. It helps, but it is no panacea for what ails us.

      2. pesky little thing called genetic predisposition, and again, research is pinpointing the genes that play a direct role in disease, and aberrant genes more often than not are also a result of pollution, air, water, food.

The Baby Teeth Study, at the link, is a good case in point.
