John Stewart: Obama is channeling Bush

bushama
he speech given by President Obama in which he ordered 30,000 troops to Afghanistan has faced much criticism from the media. What struck Jon Stewart was the manner in which Obama delivered the speech, pointing out that it greatly resembled Bush and his "grasp" of the English language.

After initially denying it, Stewart was terrified to find Obama channeling Bush in many ways. He then listed the warning signs: a 9/11 reference, dipping into Bush's "bucket of fear," and a reliance on absolutist rhetoric. But what sealed the deal was that the usually cool Obama even had a Freudian gaff when he stated that he was "bringing the Iraq War to an irresponsible end."

Stewart was also dumbfounded that both Presidents have made speeches ordering exactly 30,000 troops. Asked Stewart: "Is 30,000 troops the military equivalent of two Advil?"

    • I don't hate Obama, I HATE WAR. How convenient it must be to label anyone who wants peace and an end to the lies a hater... and how illogical. That was one reason why I didn't vote for Obama in the first place. I knew he would turn out just like Bush regarding this war. And I am not on the left or the right. Why does giving the opinion you are against this war make you a left or right person? That is one reason why this country is so torn apart: people constantly labeling everyone left, right, etc. When are we going to start being Americans first again and standing up for what is right regardless of the man in the White House and his party affiliation?

    • Honestly people still amaze me. The left hates Obama because he escalated the war in Afghanistan(like he campaigned he would) while the right uses any and every excuse they can get to badmouth him. It seems to me that people arent "waking up" to the similarities between Obama and Bush as much as people are unhappy that things havent been fixed in one day. Its like the South Park episode about the night after the election. Everybody went crazy thinking things had changed and would be perfect in the morning. Of course Obama isnt going to fix everything in a day. The damages caused by Bush run deep indeed and the economy is something that takes months and years to even see the effects of new policies. It hasnt been a year yet people speak of impeachment or even assassinating the president. WTF? Things arent that bad and although it may not seem like it yet things are better. Personally i think Obama has made a few unpopular but necessary decisions. Is he the best President ever? Hardly. But hey give the man some credit the country hasnt been in such bad shape since the great depression.

    • He was discussing the Afghan war not the Iraq war, which was the one he said he'd end. By the way, if we were expecting a different kind of leader why did we elect a member of one of the same two political parties we've had for God knows how long? And one more thing 9/11 was what the Afghan War was about in the first place!!!!!!

Remember Wolfowitz claiming that the war would pay for itself ?

Jon's words about the previous administration are also starting to sound eerie ;)

"The problem that I have with their administration, in terms of credibility; is that everything they say they are, is what they're not ! " - Jon Stewart / Daily Show

Now, anybody up for Iran ?

"Dictatorships start wars because they need external enemies to exert internal control over their own people." - Richard Perle

    • I'm a little surprised. It does indeed seem that Obama's support group is now fleeing in response to the Afghanistan War- but was anyone listening during the campaign? I'm pretty sure he talked at length about withdrawing out of Iraq and increasing troops in Afghanistan. He never claimed to be some kind of "anti-war" President... so I understand the general protest about the war, but it definitely should have been expected!

Ah. Well I think that he's newsworthy because he's challenging the standard role of the comedian in news and politics. There's always been political comedians, but Jon raised the standard as well as The Daily Show in general to a new place. Maybe comedy helps people take in bad news better, or helps them deal with it...

    • J_Jammer:

i feel the exact opposite way of everything mister J_Jammer just stated. I feel that it is sufficient enough to say, rather then go line by line. but for the sake of J_Jammer's relentless commenting, it is only understandable to set the record straight.

Jon Stewart does a better job of giving his audience real credible news then most news netwroks do themselves. I would like to give credit to his hard working writers too as well. This show is indeed meant for humor, and scripted as one. But it delivers the news, good and bad, with Jon and the writer's shared view points, all delivered with some great hilarity, yet driving the message across. The Daily Show is not seeking to distort what is being discussed for the sake ratings or promoting political ideals. That we leave up to MSNBC and FOX News. Indeed, the attempt is to better inform the people with a touch of humor, though at times, not so tastefully (which many viewers still enjoy). So don't sit there and accuse Jon Stewart of simply being interested in laughter or that he is trying to "herd people more than most."

There are so many more people to consider that clearly distort facts, manipulate stories, and driven to sway their viewers and followers. First and for most, Glenn Beck who openly admits to not even checking his facts, which The Daily Show points out, then provides its own credibility. Beck is a self proclaimed "rodeo clown" and "not a reporter, just a commentator", yet he is the one sitting on the FOX "News Channel". I think you might have a problem with Jon Stewart because you know he is right; also, why you might think he is trying to herd people, because he is making it difficult for you to continue to follow yours.

I think you need to lighten up. The Daily Show pieces may not be absolutely top news worthy, but it is relatable to the news when a popular liberal is able to analyze and criticize our current Democrat President.

He manipulates stories and facts with his opinion and what he wishes people to see. He is no better than any news agency...period. No matter how many words you string to gether you can't make him better just because your bias suggests it.

    • J_Jammer:

But he wasn't really a "news agency", he was a comedian- the point of the show is to give it a twist, to add his humorous opinion (whether or not you find it humorous is a different story.) That's what makes him newsworthy- he made a comedy show that was iffy at best (does anyone remember The Daily Show before Jon took over? That's why I said he raised it to a new standard!) and turned it into a real source for information. He's not supposed to be an unbiased reporter, he's supposed to be funny!

    • J_Jammer:

It's just a show. If he was really serious about what he was being critical about....then he should have showed that while Obama was running for President. A little too late....and therefore I don't believe he's being critical. He's just trying too hard.

    • Why are people so taken back by his decision? He said he was going to do this during his campaign. It was one of his major policy points and we voted him into office with this on the table. I do not nec like it, but he said he was going to do it so I can't cry now.

All the Republicans suck and about 50 percent of the Democrates suck. All the Republicans and corporatists and all the DLC Democrates are Republican trogan horses. Bill Clinton was one of the biggerst DINOs.
