Sky News is reporting on this disturbing new tend in South Africa. Police are refusing to prosecute the crime and many in the community believe corrective rape is an acceptable means to "teach them a lesson".

Reading this has appauled and horrified me. It would seem almost impossible for anyone with a different sexual orientation to stay anywhere in south africa without feeling isolated, dehumanized and living in constant fear. After watching "missionaries fo hate" it is clear the problem is growing increasingly worse, especially in ares which are highly populated with vulnerable brainwashed christian followers!!!

JAJ,
I concur that it is abhorrent. But, as so often happens, people are twisting Jesus' message into something utterly foreign to his teachings. The article says at its end: "Once again Christianity is at the bottom of that which is despicable." No.
People are using the Bible as an excuse without reading its language or even seeking to understand its intent. Jesus' message was one of tolerance and open-mindedness. I cannot believe that the man who would dine with lepers, prostitutes and (shudder) tax collectors would reject lesbians.
In fact, if you know anything about him and his life, I think you would agree that he would be horrified at what many organized religions have done -- and continue to do -- in his name. They have taken "Christ" out of "Christianity." I am appalled and angered at this outrage. But Jesus would have felt the same...and with greater intensity.

This is truly abhorring. It's so disgusting what people can do when they simply don't understand something, and in turn fear it. I can't stand ignorance or turning to religion for all of your life's solutions, and when those are combined it's not surprising that people think "corrective rape" is an okay thing to do.

I'm also wondering why this is listed under Comedy. Can someone fix that? It's clearly not appropriate.

Completely unacceptable. These criminals are the ones that need to be taught a lesson!
Personally, it gives me the shivers to hear this referred to as a "trend." When I hear that word, I think of Twitter or Ugg boots... not rape.

Africa as a nation has many problems, so does the rest of the world, however while we in 'developed' countries are still repressed, these repressions dont manifest themselves in the forms of female circumcision or rape that goes unpunished.
This is due to people in africa and (i'm not singling people out here so dont get offended!!) basically the middle east, muslim countries where women come second and this is what most of these people are taught by birth.
However if our countries are to be something for them to look to for ways to treat their women, then our women should stop dressing like prostitutes, including christian celebrities like beyonce who bounce around on stage wearing nothing. - 2 years ago

HAHAHAHA, I'm sorry, but that's just to funny. Teach them a lesson, hahaha. This really made my day. I'm sorry if any of you guys are offended by this, but seriously, who had the bright idea to take someone who doesn't like men normally, and then have them be attack sexed by some dude. Can someone please buy Africa the book of common sense so we can all move on?

A report by the international NGO ActionAid, backed by the South African Human Rights Commission, said the horrific crimes against lesbians were going unrecognised by the state and unpunished by the legal system.

The government in South Africa is the one to blame for not tackling the actions of idiots, bigots and cowards quickly and harshly! It's time the so called leaders in South Africa, step down, face the women that are being attacked and be arrested for allowing these atrocities!!!

Now wait a minute, S. Yes, this conduct is unbelievably cruel and inhuman...but I wonder if the core philosophy might have broader applications.
They are trying to make these women change their very nature by forcing them to engage in an activity that is abhorrent to them, right?
Do you suppose if we forced Conservatives to be compassionate, non-judgemental and broad-minded, it would turn them into human beings?
Just sayin'
