Five Reasons Why Fox News Dominated Ratings In 2009

Image
KSirys
What we’ve known since about March is about to come true – Fox News is headed for its best ratings of all time this year.

As their competitors in cable news fall far behind, FNC looks toward the rest of the cable universe as its new competition – it finished in the top five on all of cable in prime time and total day. What was the reason for FNC’s success? Heres’ five reasons.

1: Glenn Beck: Beck’s enormous success during his first year has helped FNC tremendously. His 5pmET show is up 96% in total viewers and a whooping 148% in the demo from what was in its place last year. But the most important factor for FNC as a whole is Beck’s timeslot. By having the show on at 5pm, the network gets another hour of prime time-like ratings while still keeping its three prime time programs in place. It’s a win-win – and as Beck continues his 100-year plan in 2010, it’s a strategy that will likely continue to pay dividends.

2: Bill O’Reilly: The O’Reilly Factor has been the #1 show on all of cable news for 10 years now, in the demo and in total viewers. Year-to-year, O’Reilly improved as well – up 14% in total viewers and 29% in the demo. While FNC’s all-star continues having his best year, their 9pmET host, Sean Hannity, has enjoyed his best year ever, going solo for the first time.

3: Pres. Barack Obama: FNC has, without a doubt, benefited greatly in the ratings from the election of Pres. Obama. It’s hard to imagine how their ratings would look if Sen. John McCain was elected, but it’s likely they wouldn’t be nearly as strong. By playing the voice of opposition, FNC will continue their ratings success for the next three years – at least. But all of their programs were up in both categories, including their hard news shows at 3, 6 and 7pmET. While their opinion hosts drive the ratings, their viewers are interested in the news product as well.

4: Tea Parties: While the summer months generally see lower ratings, FNC was strongly helped – as their competitors, to some degree – by the tea parties that took place. It didn’t just benefit the tea parties biggest drivers, Beck and Hannity, but from all the news coverage that came from the admittedly great media moments at the parties. Politicians and citizens fighting? Great TV, especially for the FNC audience. The FOX Report, Studio B and Special Report all had their best years ever in total viewers.

5: Stronger Weekends: The one area FNC was not the strongest network in the past was on the weekends, where CNN did news and MSNBC did doc block – to big ratings. With the addition of Mike Huckabee and the continued success of Geraldo Rivera (and Hannity/Beck repeats), the weekends have thrived as well.

    • Well I guess you and the other 8 liberals left in America know something that the rest of us don't. Could you just keep it to yourself? Or go to the young turds website and rant instead?

    • nursediesel - Here's some truth for you from Politico: In a powerful speech from the Senate floor Sunday, Sheldon Whitehouse (RI-D), took his Republican colleagues to task for their "no-holds barred mission of propaganda, obstruction and fear." Whitehouse concluded: "There will be a reckoning. There will come a day of judgment about who was telling the truth.""[Republicans have engaged in] a campaign of falsehood about death panels and cuts to Medicare benefits and benefits for illegal aliens and bureaucrats to be parachuted in between you and your doctor. Our colleagues terrify the public with this parade of imagined horrors. They whip up concerns and anxiety about socialized medicine and careening deficits and then they tell use the public is concerned about the bill.""Vindictive passions often arise, [Hofstadter] points out, when an aggrieved minority believes that America has been taken away from them their kind, though they are determined to try to repossess it and to prevent the final destructive act of subversion. Does that sound familiar . . . in this health debate? . . . [Hofstadter] wrote of the dangers of an aggrieved right-wing minority with the power to create what he called a political climate in which the rational pursuit of our well-being and safety would become impossible."Our colleagues are behaving in this way – unprecedented, malignant and vindictive – because they are desperate to avoid that day of judgment, frantic and desperate now and willing to strange and unprecedented things, willing to do anything, even throw our troops at war in the way of that day of reckoning. If they can cause this bill to fail, the truth will never stand up as a living reproach to the lies that have been told. . . . But when the bill passes and this program actually comes to life . . . there will come a day of judgment, and our Republican friends know that. That, Mr. President, is why they are terrified.”

    • Glenn Beck: Media Matters' 2009 Misinformer of the Year . . .

Glenn Beck's well of ridiculous was deep and poisonous before he launched his Fox News show, but the inauguration of the 44th president of the United States -- and the permissive cheerleading of his Fox News honchos -- uncorked the former Morning Zoo shock jock's unique brand of vitriol, stage theatrics, and hyperbolic fright, making him an easy choice for Media Matters' 2009 Misinformer of the Year.

Beck closeted? That could explain the wild mood swings and paranoia! I think you are on to something. He needs to exorcise those demons and let his freak flag fly and he won't be so wound up all the time. :D

What is really funny about Beck is the basic ignorance of the Democratic agenda that provides fodder for his cannon. Do not blame him, you are feeding him the ammunition!

He had a good point to make and decided to go a tad overboard. By his logic, non-blacks should never comment on anything that has to do with black people, because it violates their 'self-sufficiency'.

I'm sure there's a middle-aged white non-college educated blue collar person out there that supports Obama and watches MSNBC and CNN (I don't care for MSNBC, Fox or CNN. I don't get why this comparison matters.) but that doesn't change the characteristics of majority.

I don't agree with them, or MSNBC. But just like you shove the fact that you somehow fandangled an idiot into the oval office in peoples faces, this story should be shoved in your face. That was to you, typical left wing faux-intellectual current news commentator.

Actually, I don't think that he will fundamentally change this country and I do not think that is a good thing. Change is what is needed and what I am seeing is business as usual. I would like to see some reform. I would like to see some decisive action about outdated and unfair policies. It has only been a year and Obama inherited probably the worst mess that any other President had to deal with, so I will cut the President some slack. The wars that we are caught up in are bankrupting us, our freedoms are being curtailed in the name of security and our representatives are simply mascots for their lord and master lobbyists. As far as I am concerned, we not only let the terrorist win, our government aided and abetted them.

Oooh, we changed our original comment, didn't we?

It is very funny to anyone that has a good sense of humor and is paying attention to the world around them. They do not have to be fair because it is a comedy show which allows for truths or lies that can not be uttered by news organizations that actually value their journalistic integrity.

Its purpose is to entertain and inform in that order. It serves its purpose quite admirably when you consider how many time sensitive shows they have to put out. Sometimes it is hit or miss, but it is mostly hit. I think it is a very important program because I do believe more people get their news from it than probably should. :)

it's funny that you're comparing Fox with a comedy show, as if they SHOULD be equal. The Daily Show is self-titled FAKE NEWS. Do you really want to willingly make that comparison?

Also, the funniness of the Daily Show is an opinion, and doesn't relate to its political leaning. It's not like it hasn't made jabs at Obama, or pointed out his hypocrisy as well. Does Fox do the same with their heroes?

That's exactly what MSNBC does, except of course they only have so much air time to devote too it.

I don't believe they tell blatant lies and they make corrections when the are mistaken. Fox has been caught in a number of blatant lies. I challenge anyone to show me where MSNBC is telling lies. Talk is cheap. Back it up.

no one thinks msnbc is perfect. no one ever, EVER said they were. but no one has listed a single lie of msnbc, either, or of more left-wing media in general. but i'm really curious about it, since more conservative commentators are quick to say fox and msnbc are par, but have not shown any evidence for it. and until they do, it would be nice for them to stop talking in inflammatory and useless generalizations. though everyone should stop.

      ***

LOL. I'm sure someone is working on it...

BTW, you exhibit a propensity to projecting yourself on others by putting words in in their mouths as you displayed again here today ("...since some people think they are perfect.")

Your arguments personify the 'straw man'.

      For your edification:
      The straw man argument

A: "Those of our people who are forced by circumstances beyond their control to rely on Social Security and government support such as Aid to Dependent Children, Food Stamps, etc. - these victims of an anarchistic economy are now faced with a second threat to their very existence: their already minimal benefits are now being reduced by inflation.

If we are morally committed to supporting these people in the first place, then we must support them consistently: either we approve the proposed increase in Social Security and government support - or we simply turn our backs on those who are unable to help themselves."

B: "A represents naive liberals who only steal the taxpayer's hard-earned money - and throw it away on the idle. This is robbery - and I oppose it.

A: It's not fair that when doing the same work and with the same qualifications, women are paid only $ .70 for every $1.00 that men are paid.

Isn't it reasonable to expect that in equivalent jobs, with equivalent work experience and education, that your sex should have no impact on your salary?

B: Of course not! Everyone knows that bosses go easier on women and what they do. Besides girls are physically smaller and weaker than men, so they need to be protected from the real world.

A: ...I don't believe they (MSNBC) tell blatant lies and they make corrections when the are mistaken.

B: Looks like someone's going to have to post the lies of MSNBC since some people think they are perfect.

Are you paying attention, i hate all the malls?

    • I find often when someone posts an article from a political blog rather than a news source there turns out to be an actual news source from which the piece was taken and merely spun to the advantage of the blog. Such is the case here as well.

The original data comes form here
      http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/440766-Cable_News_Ratings_Fox_News_Has_...

Tea parties are not mentioned. Obama is not mentioned. Those two points appear to be pure assumption.

Another point of spin is that the blog article fails to mention that FOX News has held this spot for eight consecutive years. There's no giant change there. What is interesting is that while it is growing slowly with only one exception all the other networks are shrinking quite quickly. The one that is not is HLN(CNN2), which specializes in sound bite news.

Keep in mind, this is not fox network this is fox news. The news only cable program. They do have a big advantage. Most people get their news from the web these days. I haven't so much as turned on my TV in months.

Most of fox news viewers though don't watch because they want to but because they are told to by their ministers. They don't use the internet.

The whole of cable news channels is in the dumps except for fox. It's not their fine programming it's their captive Luddite viewership.

Two basic emotions fear and hate , focused into tall tales . That is about all some people can handle . If people had easy access to real , comprehensive , in depth news , things might be different . That is becoming more and more a memory . Many work to seek it out . They value truth that much . There is lots of stuff in the water . It just hasn't gotten to everyone yet . It never will . people with weak minds will turn on you like snakes , simply for disagreeing , because they WANT to believe . Truth be damned . While they sit comfortable , it works for them . At the moment they are pawns to be harnessed for the price , of a transitory feeling of righteousness .

I though that everyone understood by now the czar simply means department head and that Nixon and Bush had thenm too. You're hung up on the fact that some Russian leaders were called czars but that was used with a different connotation. About when do you think the government is going to knock on your door and take you prisoner? That's pretty scary isn't it?

    • You folks crack me up. Theres what maybe 3 or 4 thousand people here on Current.

Your one of the biggest "hate groups" around. Maybe "hate group" is the wrong term. I should say "scared group" instead

If Fox news told half as many lies as you all claim the shitheads at msnbc would have an hour long show detailing the previous days shows on FOX NEWS and show each and every lie FOX NEWS said, then back it up with facts from legit sources proving they were telling lies instead of showing 15 second clips showing Glenn Beck crying or going crazy on air. You continue to watch the 15 second clips from shit for brains like John Stewart, or Chris mathews, or Keith Oberman or the goofy bitch rachel mad at the world maddow.

Maybe Current should do a show detailing every lie FOX NEWS tells. If you all are right they should be able to do a hour long show at least every day showing the lies and proving with facts that they are lies.

You know why no one does that....BECAUSE THEY DONT LIE.

The only time the WH ever called up to correct Glenn Beck was to correct him on Van Jones. They told him VJ was not a czar. They didnt deny what VJ said, only that he wasnt a czar.

No of you can prove there wont be death panels.

      and obama is a muslim.

Fox News most certainly does lie, and they all have the same memo to read from. Here is Outfoxed; a great documentary that was put together years ago, meaning before Beck joined on and Obama even came into the spotlight, yet it notes many trademark moves Fox still practices to this day.

On this very article, there is a tag that reads "Fox News". Click it. You will find various articles that have been posted debunking the very lies Fox News sells to its audience. It does not have to be the current community that puts together these ways of hashing out the lies, this is our format of bringing it in from all the various other sources that have taken the time to do just that. From The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, crooks and liars site, media matters, politico, huffington post, msnbc; all these sources may scream liberal to you, but they also discuss the falsehoods of Fox News. They are not undermining the conservatives and manipulating the facts, because it is quite clear these sources are discussing what has been said, checking the facts, asking questions; which has integrity in doing so. Yes these people have a liberal bias, but at the end of the day, its the people that are reporting the facts that can be valued over those who tell stories to fit the context of their agenda and have their viewers mistake it for truth.

ok you should understand that ratings have very little to do with respect. That said, Fox may have the highest ratings, but close to the least amount of respect for the manner in which they behave. Jon Stewart has much more respect in the WORLD, compared to assholes like O'Reilly and Beck. You can't find me evidence that these 'liberal' sources have any where near as much falsehoods in their material as Fax News does. But you bet your ass that I can find an endless stream of material that catches Fax's dirty work.

Your comment about death panels not being able to disproven, even though they cant be proven to exist in the bill... um really? isn't that just going to be childish now?

If you had checked my link about Obama's Christian faith, you would have read about how he had been in search of a new Church to attend. Btw, have you ever looked into Rev. Wright? Have you ever watched the entire clip in which he says "God Damn America!" Well here is your chance. Try and understand the context in which he said such things. He seems to be damning the state in which America had gotten, damning the hatred, damning the war, damning the greed, damning inhumanity; all for the sake of addressing the problems we face with brute honesty, so that we can make it better.

"WE RULE THE WORLD and fuck anyone who doesnt like it."

That view is what hurts this country. The U.S. does not rule the world. At least not in the sense you would like to think it does. The U.S. rules the world through corporations that exploit other countries for their labor and resources, then protects these assets with help by the military. The view that the U.S. has been a force for good for the last few decades is false by most measures. The U.S. consumes 30% of the planets resources, yet it only has some where around 4% of the population. If every country consumed as much as the U.S. does, we would need 3 more planets. That info is from The Story of Stuff's videos. The U.S. will not be able to sustain its behaviors in the long run, so its best to start changing our ways. In 2010, 67% of U.S. taxes will be used for the Military and Defense budget, leaving 37% for everything else. Does that seem adequate to the needs of this country? Most would agree that it is not.

You can flaunt your "FUCK THE WORLD" tattoo as if it means much, but when the world decides to say "FUCK THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", then its going to matter, and your going to have to wish the leader of the country got on his hands and knees to beg for time and resources to help this little nation. Like it or not, you need the rest of the world more then they need you. Showing some respect is the least you could do.

Here you are, being arrogant, trying to defend the corporate news channel that has the largest case of misleading information, swaying it viewers, and getting in the way of progress. I even said that the liberal sources were openly bias, but being bias is not the equivalent of being manipulative. Fox News is bias, but it has been caught on numerous occasions of distorting stories and misleading its audience. You ask for evidence that Fox News is distorting stories, yet we all know there is tons of evidence right here on Current to find. All the while, you have never been able to point to a single case in which any of these liberal sources had done anything like Fox does. If Jon Stewart ever got caught distorting a story for the sake of his liberal bias, it would be head line news. Fox does it everyday and you want someone to take the time of compiling the evidence and present as some special? PuhLease...

@Ajil, 67% and 37% adds up to 104%. Back to school. My next point; Military and defense spemding provides jobs to tax paying citizens and corporations that pay taxes. When the net effect of military spending is adjusted for taxes remitted the 67% is likely rduced by at least 25%, around $50 million. Now the money spent on food stamps, section8 housing, aid to dependent children, and all of the other wasted money propping up a government dependent , democratic voting population is not taxed. So jump up my ass about military spending. At least it provides some respect for the workers.

    • I'd say people watch their stuff because FOX is very good at grabbing ratings, speaking directly to their demographics and scare tactics. Not only that,... but ALOTTA people are full of prejudices, which FOX seems to cater to.
As a country,... we seem to be becoming even more politically split. And a bad economy has forced ALOTTA folks to think more selfishly and with more prejudices,... which are quite often a Republican trait.
I always tell my wife that if I ever start exhibiting right-wing, Republican, Conservative views to first kick my in the nards,... and then remind me of my youthful beliefs - beliefs of selflessness, tolerance, open-mindedness and coexistence.

Al Jazeera English has nothing to do with Muslims.

I can see easily how someone who is misinformed and both a willfully and spitefully ignorant asshole redneck would make such a grievous error, were that the case here.

Of course that could not be so since you are a clearly a scholar and a gentleman.

See what I just did there?

Al Jazeera tries to maintain higher standards of fact based reporting than Fox does. Just because a story seems pro-Palestinian does not mean that the stories are fabricated.

That is actually a bad comparison, my apologies, Al Jazeera. I am actually having a hard time thinking of a comparison because I think Fox may very well be the worst in history in regard to journalistic integrity.

    • One thing that seems certain is that Fox does not get high ratings from reporting the boring old TRUTH. After being caught several times lying about and staging "news" stories it is fairly obvious that Fox gets its ratings because so many bible thumpin self righteous Americans do not care about the news or the truth. They only want their beliefs supported and to be entertained in the process.

The birther lies. The kill grandma lies. The Obama is a Muslim lies. etc. etc. etc. These are obvious lies. The tactics the Republicans have used have been dirty destructive lies that tainted the health care debate and the Conservative talk show hosts backed them up and added too them. Those who keep referring too Democratic lies need to factually state exactly what lies they're talking about.

Once again, what Daily Show lies are you referring too? The show is primarily political satire about current events which sometimes include the Democrats and Obama. Yes he leans toward liberal and no ones saying he doesn't.

Here is the "Big Lie"! Obama is insisting that Universal Health Care is a mandate from the people, yet he has had to bribe Democrats to vote for his program. Mary Landrieu, D-Louisiana, even admitted that she received $300 million in "pork" for the state in return for her vote. This is just the tip of the iceberg! Who's $300 million is this retard spending? It is mine, yours, and ours; assuming that 50% of Democrats actually pay taxes.

As if Universal Healthcare is a bad spending idea but going to war with a country and completely destabilizing the region for money amounts that I can not even comprehend was an awesome idea. Oh yeah, and it was the wrong country to boot! If we didn't do that, we might actually be able to do something decent for our own population for a change.

@Sleep Dirt, your short term memory is failing you. You posted on Health Care, with a cartoon of Homer Simpson, the 7 th post out of 148 to date. I was just replying to your ill concieved initial foray. Typical liberal, living in a fantasy world.

You can't trust anyone anymore. Honesty in journalism is dead. It died with Walter Cronkite and again when Rather finally left CBS. Everything is biased, everyone has an opinion, and the Hollywood stars and what drug they overdosed on is the most important news story of the week (no disrespect to Brittany Murphy). Mainstream media murdered journalism, and all the major news stations have as much blood on their hands as Fox.

Do yourself a favor: turn off your TV, log off the computer, go outside, and do something important. Help your community. Teach a kid to read, to swim, to ice skate, or something, ANYTHING. Or go report news. REAL news. Or even make news.

That is the most absurd statement to date here on current. How could the weather be a lie. How could the report on market activity be a lie. Do they lie when the give the closing market numbers?

When someone makes a statement like you just did how could anyone take anything you say as serious.

Come on. We assume that you understand that we are not talking about the strictly news portion on daily events on Fox. Of course the weather is simply the weather. We know that. You know who we're talking about so why not be honest. Limbaugh, O'Rilley, Beck and the other commentators are who we speak of. Of course you know that and are just trying to cloud the issue.
