John Oliver becomes the latest comedian to try to beat the comic odds with his new endeavor, John Oliver’s New York Stand-Up Show. Each episode, he corrals four of his favorite comedians and lets them loose in solo sets recorded at New York University. Judging by the initial episode, laughter will occur. But there’s no guarantee every performer will strike comedy gold – or even bronze.
