Maybe. I just like the idea of a giant Bible robot fighting Travolta and his cohorts until they obliterate each other.
But I digress: According to Australian news outlet ABC News, the Faith Comes By Hearing organization has sent 600 of these Bibles already, which will spread the Holy Word speaking in Haitian Creole. They claim that they are helping Haitians by "providing faith, hope and love through God's word in audio". The first part is good, especially if you accompany that with food, water, medicines, and shelter. The second part, however, may not be that useful at this point.
They claim that "the Proclaimer is self-powered and can play the Bible in the jungle, desert or... even on the moon!" I'm sure that it would be more helpful in the moon than it could be in Haiti. Because I imagine that, in Haiti, a solar-powered Bible would be as helpful as the Genesis according to Eddie Izzard.

This is how the Ayatollah Khomeini brought the uneducated and illiterates of Iran to make him the ruler of Iran after the revolution.
He sent out cassettes with his preaches that told people that they do not have to work and if he is ruler they will get checks from the Iranian oil industry every month.
Creepy.

Thanks for your spirited dialog about the solar powered audio Bibles. Even if you are a person of faith or not, we all agree that food, water, medical supplies, doctors, nurses, etc., are first priority.
First things first, these audio Bibles are NOT and HAVE NOT displaced, delayed or denied ANY essential aid to these people who have suffered so much.
These devices are still in the states enroute to dozens of relief groups who have called ASKING for them. The Haitians have been preyed upon for a long-time by those interested in exploiting their natural resources and impoverishing their people.
Our non-profit believes the people of Haiti are that nation’s most precious resource, and we desire to empower them with the Scriptures (in which they believe) in a format they can use. Roughly half the nation is unable to read, so giving them the Bible in a format they can use–audio, is completely reasonable.
To illustrate, if I may, a Haitian man outside of Port au Prince emailed me with his location and said please send Audio Bibles because he and others would love to hear the words of God in their own language during this crisis. All the other Haitians we've communicated with have simply said, "Thank you, send more."
We are responding to THEIR needs and desire. The Haitians' well-being is in our best interest. That's why we are sending these down with other groups who have room for them and will use them.
In fact, more than 25 groups are now taking solar powered Audio Bibles to Haiti. From well-drilling teams to medical specialists and doctors to water purification experts, etc. The Christian world knows that the Haitian people can not survive at all without faith, hope and love.
Regardless, some will see our actions as useless, wasteful and opportunistic. There is much misinformation out there, and if anyone really wanted to know more they could just visit our website.
The Haitians will have to deal with the loss of loved ones, the memories of what they’ve experienced and lived through, and a long reconstruction process. They know they need religion, comfort and direction in this time. To deny them that emotional and spiritual support would be inhumane, irresponsible, and inappropriate.
Another blogger had the same reaction with similiar posts, then he posted this apology...http://stationarypilgrim.wordpress.com/2010/01/30/open-your-mouth-and-show-your-...

The Haitians are very religious and spiritual people - what bothers you and your ilk is that they do not share your particular brand of religion, hence the wasteful dropping of your "bibles" upon the Haitian people - the resources you wasted dumping these useless audio "bibles" would have been better used supplying what the Haitian people really need.

Wait, I have it! What the Christians are trying to do is send Haitians devices that they can take apart and jerry rig into fully functional solar panels that will provide areas of Haiti that need power with electricity. The reason why Christians are doing this in such a round about way is because their faith demands that they be humble, so rather than look like they're making a fairly significant contribution, they are looking like a bunch of asses who care more about converting others to their faith BEFORE helping them!
That or these particular Christians are a bunch of asses who care more about converting others to their faith before actually helping them.

I doubt that this bibles will be used to try to convert or be forced upon those who don't want them. Haiti has a large Catholic population, but also a large illiterate population. These bibles are probably going to be use to provide spiritual comfort. A lot of you guys are arguing that that need food, shelter and medical care more, and i agree, but somewhere along the line a lot of them are going to need some comforting words. Maybe chaplains might have been a better idea.
Embedded is a link to an Anderson Cooper story of a 70 year old woman pull from the wreckage a cathedral. She appears to be devoutly religious and probably willing to talk to a chaplain then a grief counselor or psychologist. I'm pretty sure that if she asked for a bible, she should get one.

It is impossible to give explanation to such a natural tragedy, and a way to heal positively is the trust in the light that must be found in the darkness of darkness. Whatever religion, technology, or science that encourages Haiti survivors with positive energy and love, should be accepted in whatever language it may come. Even if it comes in the form of a dog or a cat.

And what makes you think they aren't spiritual? Because they don't bow down to your God? I believe in the teachings of Christ (the true Gnostic teachings denied by the church because they challenged their power and authority) and those teachings are about seeing the divine light in all of us. It is not about being judgmental and arrogant and seeking to diminish the spirit in anyone and control them simply because they don't follow it as you do. Those who warp the words of Christ simply to push their own agenda do not follow the true words of Christ. I am sure many Haitians follow their own faith and take comfort in that faith. It is not up to YOU to deny them that faith, spiritualism or whatever gives them hope. And please, "Born Again Christian? 3. Not willing to risk my eternal life on it. I was on a path to Hell until i repented and started living by the Word. I've seen where it leads you. but to each their own. I don't see any way of rectifying this issue without a hand-waivey, bare assertion fallacy, circular logic explanation. A faith is better served by admitting a foible than to claim infallibility. If there is an element that is of humanity, then it is prone to err. And that's okay. What's not okay is to lead a flock astray. - 2 years ago

2. Ridiculous argument.
3.Thats what religion preys on. Noone really knows what happens when you die. Christianity just offers up its own ideas on the afterlife. I mean cmon who doesnt want to live a life of bliss for eternity? Especially the poor, exploited classes who have really shitty lives to begin with. Whats more enticing to a medieval serf than life without pain and misery? Seems a little too perfect to me.Seems like people are skeptical about everything EXCEPT religion. Ok this is an open challenge to the "christians" out there. Just a few questions to 'test your faith'.
1. If Christianity is the Truth and the only Truth then shouldnt Christianity be the worlds first religion? I mean why wait 8000 years after the beginning of civilization to teach humans who their creator is?
2. If the Bible is the word of God then why was it written and rewritten and altered by humans? Look up the Council of Nicaea. Its when HUMANS decided what was "the word of God" and what wasnt.
3. Why is it so hard to believe that religion is a sham? Just take a close look at it. It keeps the poor people poor and elevates certain 'holy' people to a higher position. Churches own more land in the world than ANY company.

1. There was writting looooooooong before any of the apostles lived. Remember the Sumerian, Babylonian, Minoan, Phoenician, Egyptian, etc. civilizations? They used written languages in the form of cuneiform, hieroglyphics and the like.
2. Thats really what you take out of christianity? Not the caring about others, or the morals but the fact that Jesus turned into a zombie. Interesting...
3. Youre missing the whole point. Organized religion puts money and power in the hands of a chosen few. And trust me these people arent appointed by God. Unless God is cool with pedophilia that is...@Atlanda

I always crack up when a Christian athlete says how he prayed to make the play and does and how god made it happen. What about the guy on the other team that prayed that it didnt happen? WTF?

It actually makes me cringe. No faith in humanity itself, only in some inter-dimensional being.
And of course, a being so powerful wouldn't understand and thus condemn us for not believing.
If only they knew that the real power is in thoughtfulness, of self, and of others. It's just too bad we'll never see the look on their faces when they die and realize it was all a bunch of bullshit.

I've seen demons and I'm not referring to the ones found in any GOP rallies.I have yet to see an angel but I believe its safe to assuming that if one set exists so does the other.I have also seen miracles occur to people I know in person. Not just on t.v. performed by some televangelist.I have seen the prayers of the poor and suffering answered.I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that greater forces are at work here...positive and negative.I'm not calling everyone in this thread an idiot.Only the majority of them. The cap fits and they wear it with pride.

The majority of you people are idiots.Just because your hollow atheist minds are limited to the things of this life doesn't mean that every other persons mind is.The same people that are here bashing the hope that comes with the belief in a higher power are the same ones that will call out to God on the day that calamity overtakes them. That day the Lord will scoff at your pleas the same way as you scoff at the Grace that is the Word of God today.Don't worry...I'll pray for you.

Why do you insist that you are correct in your thinking? What makes you believe that any metaphysical argument you give will confirm the presence of a superior being, albeit Krishna, Jesus, etc? The funny thing about metaphysics is that you don't really KNOW. I'll admit that I know nothing in terms of whether a higher power exists but I refuse to acknowledge a higher power when nothing has been proven. Please prove anything to me and I will diligently read what you have to say. Please do not rely on "faith" in your argument because faith proves nothing.
Anywho, faith and prayer doesn't provide food, water, and shelter. It may provide a mental benefit but that is being generous. Theistic propaganda does nothing of real human value in these instances.

You don't need a bible to pray, but you need food and water to survive.
If that's idiocy, then I am proud to be a huge idiot.

By the way, because I missed it in the last comment, simply suggesting to a person that they switch religions is an insult on the religion they already have. It presumes that their religion is not good and that they are immoral by choosing to follow it.
And honestly, a lot of Christians do themselves no favors by insisting that the rest of us are going to hell or that we need to be saved or some such rubbish.

Antoine, a personal choice should stay that way. That's all. If they want to be Christians, nothing is stopping them. However, once they try to force that upon others, that's when the rest of us call them out on it.

It's amazing how quickly people rush to bash Christians and harshly criticize the deeply important and personal choice they have made in following Christ. You may not agree with the actions of every Christian in the world, as I do not, but insulting a person's religion, whether Christian, Muslims, or Hindu, is wrong in a thousand ways.

What an insult. Food, water, and basic medical supplies seem like they would be slightly more effective. Just a touch.

Haitians don't need help praying, they are among the most religious people is this hemisphere. Travolta the revolta he is a gross human being. There is no place for this kind of shit there now. John Revolta should get in his Boeing707 and fly down to Haiti and save some people, he can put them up in one of his many mansions.
