George Carlin on Rights and Privileges [video]

GrrlScientist
Rights are cute ideas. Rights aren't rights at all if someone can take them away. 'God-given rights' are due to the god excuse: if god really gave you rights, he would have given you the right to have food every day and a roof over your head. But god is not (obviously!) taking care of you at all.

    • I think he's an idiot. his whole point on the Japanese internment and the governmetn "being able to take away your rights" while mocking the idea that they are "God given rights" reveals what I mean. The European constitutions, especially the British rights, are granted by the government. they can be taken away by the government. "God-given rights" means even if a government attempts to take away the rights, the people will know that it is in the wrong, and in fact THIS was the impetus behind passing the XIV amendment to ensure that the Bill of Rights was NOT interpreted to mean only "white men", and why the government evetually had to release the Japanese and why that policy will never be revisited--such as in the case of Muslims in America right now.

    • Carlin may be abrasive for some, however, what this guy consistently highlighted throughout his career was that there exists alternate ways of thinking- which is qualitatively different than acquiring new tidbits of information or "facts."
