Jon Stewart tussles with Bill O'Reilly on Fox News (Video!)

Tonight, Jon Stewart told Bill O’Reilly that the “no spin zone” ringleader had become the voice of sanity on the Fox News Channel, although “that’s like being the thinnest kid at fat camp.”

The host of “The Daily Show” and Fox’s kingpin exchanged some good-natured shots Wednesday during Stewart’s appearance on a network he relishes mocking. Stewart tossed off jokes but also criticized Fox for being a “cyclonic perpetual motion machine” opposing President Barack Obama.

“They have taken reasonable concerns about this president and this economy and turned it into a full-fledged panic attack about the next coming of Chairman Mao,” Stewart said.

I don’t think Stewart’s an idiot, but I also don’t think he’s really bright either. He’s really not capable of putting things together in a bigger picture.

As Ms Lagarde explains how the socialist government of France took majority ownership of the banks, then fired executives, Stewart never bats an eye. Not a moment’s doubt that this is “brilliant” policy from the guy liberals thinks is so bright. Take a moment to think back…hmmm. Governments having a majority stake in corporations… running those businesses…gosh, but why does the memory of National Socialism and Nazi Germany come to mind? That was, by its very nature, the definition of FASCISM. Look up and compare the definitions of Fascism and Socialism. Very similar. Primary difference: in fascism there remains a semblance of private ownership and profit earning with government control. Isn’t that what Stewart seems to be promoting?

“’In your opinion, which country is more socialist, France or America? On a scale of 1 to Che Guevara, what do you think?” I hardly even think this is amusing, yet his audience of liberal robots seem to think it was funny.

Now, when Lagarde talks about all those social programs that have helped to “mitigate” the crisis, it never occurs to Stewart to wonder how much of the economic crisis has been caused by social policies that helped to create the problem in the first place. No, all he sees is that there are programs to help people when the economy crashes, and he doesn’t care that liberal socialist policies played a major role in the collapse, especially with regard to the housing sector.

I could go on, there are many other examples from his show, this is one that sticks out. Honestly, I think O’Reilly went really easy on him to try to ease the ongoing perceived battle between the two. I was more impressed with O’Reilly’s magnanimity than Stewart’s humor or intelligence.

    • To see two people of opposing political views exchange thoughts is great. Jon was a great debater as well as Bill, but I feel that at times Bill was a bit condescending especially when he accused Daily Show viewers of being "stoners who love Obama." (a comment that was wholly unnecessary) I do agree that O'Reilly is the sanest man at Fox News, but I think that it's absurd that he believes Fox News is a real "news organization." At least The Daily Show explicitly calls itself the "most trusted name in fake news", but Fox doesn't label any of its programming as opinion shows, a fact that they leave to the American people to infer and assume.

And if Glenn Beck was an everyman, I would be in Canada by now.

Wait a minute...'O'Reilly is the sanest man at Fox news'? Wow.

      Dickipedia:

-In 2003, O’Reilly called for a boycott of French products in retaliation for French President Jacques Chirac’s stance on the Iraq war, later citing a non-existent publication as proof of the boycott’s success.

-During his show of September 19, 2007, O’Reilly expressed surprise at the fact that the primarily black patrons at a Harlem restaurant were quiet and well-behaved, comments that shocked and outraged anyone who’s never gone to see a movie above 86th Street.

-Though O'Reilly regularly smears people and often says things that anyone with a dial-up modem and 15 minutes could prove false, it was not until 2009 that someone died.

In May 2009, Dr. George Tiller, a medical doctor who performed late-term abortions, was murdered outside of his church. Many critics argue that O'Reilly's frequent use of the term "Tiller the Baby Killer" precipitated the killing. This theory could be described as merely a post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy, but, more importantly, it removes too much of the blame from some of the lunatics (or luna-dicks) who watch The Factor.

-According to a complaint leveled by Andrea Mackris, a former producer, O’Reilly subjected her to a series of his carnal fantasies, including one involving Mackris’ “spectacular boobs” and the sexual use of a loofah, which O’Reilly later, inexplicably referred to as “falafel.”

So lets sum up: he is a xenophphobe, a sexual predator, incites violence and hatred, and he is openly racist, yet he is one of the sanest men at Fox news....

Didn't say he was the sanest and most reasonable man on EARTH, but the sanest man on FOX NEWS. Yes, he is a dick. But everyone on Fox News is a dick. O'Reilly is simply the most tame anchor on the network, compared to his cohorts (ex. Sean Hannity or Glenn Beck). I find the majority of Fox News programming to be insufferable, but if I had to pick ONE man who is the most bearable and the one who is *relatively* reasonable in comparison to his coworkers and in regards to their anchorship, it would be O'Reilly. In other words, he is "the thinnest kid at fat camp" but he is still indeed, a fat kid. That is what my comment was referring to, and that is what Jon Stewart is trying to convey.

Next time read the comment within the scope of the argument rather than selectively choose a part of it and take it outside of its context.

Wikipedia-The original Al Jazeera channel was started in 1996 by an emiri decree with a loan of 500 million Qatari riyals (US$137 million) from the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa[2][3]. By its funding through loans or grants rather than direct government subsidies, the channel maintains independence of its editorial policy[4][5]. The channel began broadcasting in late 1996, with many staff joining from the BBC World Service's Saudi-co-owned Arabic language TV station, which had shut down in April 1996 after two years of operation because of censorship demands by the Saudi Arabian government.[6]

Following the initial US$ 137 million grant from the Emir of Qatar, Al Jazeera had aimed to become self-sufficient through advertising by 2001, but when this failed to occur, the Emir agreed to several consecutive loans[7] on a year-by-year basis (US$30 million in 2004,[8] according to Arnaud de Borchgrave). Other major sources of income include advertising, cable subscription fees, broadcasting deals with other companies, and sale of footage.[9] In 2000, advertising accounted for 40% of the station's revenue.[10]

    • Jon Stewart might consider himself a comedian and many people might see him as just that, but the man knows what he is talking about.

    • What Bill O' Reilly does best is cut the mike os people on his show and scream at the top of his lungs using terms like "pin head." Debating facts does not work with Fascists. Bill is just a brown shirt working for the corporate man.
He has phone sex too, but with people who don't want it. lol

    • It is very difficult to discuss an issue when one side of the arguement is operating from a base of misinformation and omittion. Stewarts points are deeply rooted in facts, logic and common sense.

    • Jon Stewart is a brilliant anti-propagandist, and with Colbert are the most effective voices against Fox, Limbaugh, and the rest of the right wing screech machine. Conservative pundits try to belittle him as "only a comedian" and yet forget the tremendous power satire has had on politics for centuries. Perhaps they haven't forgotten, and their attempts to diminish him should be viewed as fear of him.

My political views align more with Jon Stewart than any tool I have seen on Fox, but I am not going to fool myself into believing that his show doesn't have an agenda. Jon Stewart is a propaganda machine in himself. He is in fact way better at it than Fox news, because if propaganda is done correctly you won't even realize it is propaganda. I have heard him label himself as a mere comedian with a comedy show more than any conservative pundit and that is how he wants to be viewed. He is creating a non-threatening atmosphere to subtly affect the views of his show's demographic while playing the comedian card so he doesn't have to be held accountable for his words.

The issue is not whether he has problem with taking responsibility but the fact that, being a "comedian," he is above responsibility, so to speak. His followers often time mindlessly believe his stories and are persuaded by his antics, while those who disagree (followers or not) brush him off as a comic. Even when Bill O'Rielly was asking him serious questions in their 2004 interview Stewart retorted he was a comedy show and did not have to be held accountable at the same level as "The Factor."

Just so you know, I am a big Daily Show fan and Bill O'Rielly infuriates me just as much as he does you.

"However the idea that he is merely a comedian is a bit of a stretch, he certainly blurs the line between reporting, satire and comedy."
That is why I put the quotations around "comedian," I view him as an information source that is often times funny and all the time satirical. Also I wanted to clarify that my statements encompass "The Daily Show" as a whole and not just Jon Stewart.

    • O'Reilly yet again proved that he is fair and was very respectful of Stewart, even as they sparred good-naturedly. In fact, I think O'Reilly is far more fair to Stewart than vice versa.

What both of these men have in common is their willingness to attack either party for their stupidity, and that neither is perfect. They've both made and acknowledged mistakes.

I can't believe you can watch this and say O'Reilly is respectful.

"do you realize the implications of you being important in any context?" "Do you realize your audience is a bunch of stoned slackers who like obama?"

O'Reilly is the antithesis of a fair and respectful host, and is a disgrace to news. Childish finger pointing(LITERALLY this time) along with loaded questions and statements, you learn the ethics of such tactics in Journalism 101.

You use the same tactics, excuse me while I roll another joint with other level headed individuals while you spout dishonest and slanted bullshit.

Edit: Oops, forgot the horribly hidden editing of stewarts responses

I think your assessment is fair. It seems that people have preconceived notions of Mr. O'Reilly and refuse to admit that just because he holds different views that he can't be respectable or even nice. Dondonyen criticized him for calling Jon's audience stoners, though I have heard Jon refer to them that way many times. I did notice the sharp edits in the interview, but I cannot judge how biased it was without seeing what the factor cut out. In all honesty I do feel a little insulted when Jon claims that I cannot tell the difference between opinion and news. As well, I don't like how Bill O'Reilly defends Fox on every point as if they were infallible. I feel Jon could have tore him down about Fox cutting the Sate of the Union short, simply by stating that in Fox's eyes the Republican Speakers Fox did not cut short have opinions more valuable than the President.
