I have to disagree with you about Oliver North being a war criminal. He was acting under the orders of his direct command. Yes, he was supplying “terrorists” with arms and aiding them in their efforts to overthrow a legal democratic government. This was done to in an attempt to stop the growth of communism in South and Central America. Lies were told and deceit was practiced but war is dirty. As far as serving openly in the military is an extremely touchy subject for us already serving in the Military. Unit cohesion is imperative for the survival of our soldiers and success of our mission. You need total trust with you brother in arms and while I know gays already serve in the military, I am not sure what the effect on moral will be if gays serve openly. The reason I struggle with this is because I believe in equal rights for everyone. It’s the reason I have dedicated my life to the military. I would be a hypocrite if I wish for equal rights for everyone but to refuse gays Americans the privilege of serving their country and defending their rights.

Second of all, 18 as the age of manhood, is just an arbitrary designation given by U.S. society and hardly universal. In many African countries 12 is the age of manhood and a corresponding coming of age ceremony takes place along with other rites of passage. After these rituals a man can make love and be made love to. Thirdly, Who are you to quantify love based on what some think is taboo? You can’t chose who or what you love, it’s biologically pre-determined for you. You don’t think love can exist between a 16 year who is only two years from becoming what America deems as a Man, and a 21 years old?
