That's the risk since there is a certain percentage that would hate it and a certain percentage that would like it and the rest wouldn't care either way.
I guess you could say that it might act as a filter, if the guy who doesn't know the gal well enough to be reasonalby sure which percentage she falls in then he doesn't really deserve to have his proposal acepted.
That prevents more failed marriages than there are already. Maybe there should be a lot more filters to weed out the unworthy?

You have to be careful with grandstanding like that because it's a huge risk.
The gal can be embarassed by the attention, consider it selfish that he sprung it on her so he cared more for be flashy than for her feelings and feel pressured into making a decision that she wasn't ready for.
Having those possible strikes against her accepting the proposal the guy better be a lot more certain that she would say yes.
I guess that guy didn't know her as well as he thought.
