Everything was going great for “Parenthood,” the hour-long NBC dramedy based on the 1998 hit movie. It had a great pedigree. Writer/executive producer Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights) came up with a great concept and script that was heartwarming and truthful without going over the line to too cute for words. And, perhaps most important, NBC loved the show and placed it on its fall line-up.
Then last summer, one of the its stars, Maura Tierney, underwent breast surgery and a couple of months later withdrew from the program. It was devastating on many levels.
