The move from the world's biggest coffee chain comes as some McDonald's restaurants around the United States continue to offer 32-ounce sweet tea for $1 in a bid to draw customers to stores.

Way to vote up your own comment there. I went ahead and took care of that for you.
Look, let them do whatever they please if there's a market for it. Who cares, right?
Of course, that doesn't mean that people who hear this news at home should be called over sexed whiners just because they make a comment on the social implications that a 31 ounce sweet caffeinated drink has for the United States.
Not everything needs to be a partisan issue, by the way. You're part of the biggest bunch of whiners out there (that is, the idiots who think that slapping a pro-life bumper sticker on their car and complaining about "liberals" all day puts them on the "good" side of some righteous battle). The truth is, nobody really cares what you think, or what I think, for that matter, and by screaming your opinion at people all you've done is taken what could have been a discussion and turned it into a shouting match.
Forget the fact that it's exactly this kind of thing that is destroying democracy, and just try to judge it objectively. It's just not constructive, and it kind of makes you look like a jerk.

How crazy is that! Aren't we FAT enough already? I insist that all these companies that look to shove more and more food into our already overstuffed bellies NEED TO PAY for the added cost of healthcare! It's their fault we're sickly due to all the obesity that's going around and that they help create!

First of all.... ew. Second of all... go to Pete's coffee instead. Starbucks gives money to support marijuana prohibition... helping to keep our country in our financial rut, and helping to disallow the use of a powerful medicine, fuel, fiber, and all around awesome plant.

I was about to make a comment about "Trenta" being very close to the word "treinta" (thirty in Spanish), but good old randallr01 reminded us all that its even closer to Italian, because it actually means "thirty" in Italian.
Its awesome how similar Romance languages are. There's a constructed language known as Interlingua that is supposed to be mutually understandable to anyone who speaks a Romance language. Check this out:
The same in English:
Interlingua has detached itself from the movement for the development and introduction of a universal language for all humanity. Whether or not one believes that a language for all humanity is possible, whether or not one believes that Interlingua will become such a language is totally irrelevant from the point of view of Interlingua itself. The only fact that matters (from the point of view of Interlingua itself) is that Interlingua, thanks to its ambition of reflecting the cultural and thus linguistic homogeneity of the West, is capable of rendering tangible services at this precise moment in the history of the world. It is by its present contributions and not by the promises of its adherents that Interlingua wishes to be judged.

...Since Italians are world-renowned coffee snobs, Starbucks uses Italian for whatever it can get away with.
Venti = 20 = 20oz

They don't bother noticing I am not wearing a hat, nor is there anything in the store that has a green mermaid. They even hand me gift cards and get upset when we say they wont work with us. Spanish isn't the only romantic language in this world.
"Trenta" is actually the *Italian* word for 30. Just as "Venti," their 20-ounce cup, means 20 in *Italian.*
Other Italian words used at Starbucks:
• Breve
• Espresso
• Caffé Latte = coffee w/ milk
• Cappuccino
• Macchiato
• Caffé Americano

My ignorance about what, exactly? You think I didn't know that Spanish isn't the only romance language? Or that the words used at Starbucks are based on the Italian language - I do and it doesn't matter. I simply made a comment about my point of view coming from someone that speaks Spanish and you decided to try to show everyone how much you know about Italy b/c you lived there for a summer. Whoopee. And you did it in such a way to try and make it seem like I'm the one that's self-absorbed.

It reminds me of the time I met a woman named Stella. I told her that her name means 'star.' She grimaced, and then said rudely, "No, that's estrella," emphasizing the accent of the Spanish word. I then happily informed her that 'stella' is Italian. Ironically, she had thought I was the ignorant white boy.... but didn't I show her up!!

Ok I don't like coffee all that much, but once in a blue moon, I'll go to Starbucks; where as, I would never go to McDonalds, not ever. To suggest Starbucks customers compare to the heavy set the type McDonalds gets is, in my opinion, very incorrect. Consider the price of items and the purchasing power of the customers, there is a much larger portion that are willing to pay for those artificial-flavored burgers and fries then there are that can afford Starbucks so habitually. However, my information is mostly based off observation and not actual research. So it might just come down to it being relative to regional socio-economics. In Florida, there are definitely not as many over-weight people taking trips to Starbucks, as there are going to McDonalds.
