Liberty University: Students Flock To School To Study Creationism

An Agence France-Press report estimates that some 40 percent of the United States believe in creationism, which holds that the Earth was created by God only several thousand years ago. Students are flocking to Liberty University to study this literal interpretation of the Bible, much to the dismay of scientists.

Liberty University was founded by the late and very controversial Rev. Jerry Falwell.

    • my parents live in france, so now once a year i have to go there and convince the casual intellectuals I engage that america really has people with brains. I hope this story doesn't spread over there, but knowing the french sense of humor they might find this sort of thing too hard to resist.

    • I had a Liberty University Alumn as a grad teacher at Western Michigan. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt but she was the WORST instructor I have ever had. How the hell this is a accredited institution is a mystery to me. It's an insult to my pursuit of higher education.

    • A "literal" interpretation of the Bible doesn't mean believing that God made the universe and earth 6,000 years ago. In the Bible it says God is completely outside of time. A day is a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is a day.

    • I wonder if in their history classes they say that the Earth is 6000 years old. I certainly hope not, because if they don't the university is contradicting itself by teaching creationism and teaching history that doesn't begin in 4004 BC.

      How do these people teach immunology in their medical courses without talking about how viruses and bacteria evolve?

      I wonder who would ever accept a degree from Liberty University.

      What I wonder about it when do they begin their history classes. Do they teach that the Earth is 6000 years old? Because creationism teaches that.

      If they don't then the university contradicts itself. And if they do, then I feel sorry for anyone that is learning history from such a phony college.

      I cannot even begin to picture a biology class that doesn't mention the impact of Charles Darwin in modern biology. That goes without mentioning their entire Medical program.

      Yes we should be open minded and accepting towards everything. "Schools" that "teach" creationism, sure why not. Executing the mentally handicapped, sure bring it on. Hell while we're at it lets just legalize ritual murder and rape. I mean, blindly accepting everything no matter the harm is what having an open mind means right?

    • Liberty University lives up to its name by imposing a variety of restrictions on the students' liberty to live their lives as they see fit.

      The code of conduct includes possible reprimands and, later, fines, for such activities as attending dances, violating curfew, viewing R-rated movies, drinking, smoking, viewing sexually explicit material, entering the bedroom of a member of the opposite sex, having an abortion, and participating in unauthorized petitions.

      The best thing I have ever seen is when Richard Dawkins went to speak at Randolph-Macon Women's College after publishing his book "The God Delusion." He gave a long lecture about his book and then had a question and answer session... a bunch of students from nearby Liberty University came by to visit and ask questions.

      He kicks ass.

    • What about the US Attorney General's office getting filled up with morons from Pat Robertsons's 4th tier legal school Trinity University under President Bush II. People with degrees from Harvard and Yale were denied over graduates from a school that is a converted TV studio.

      Well the obvious problem Religion has always had with Science is demoting Planet Earth and Humans from being all that special. Just look at every theory that threatened to have its developers' head chopped off, from Galileo's concept that The Sun and all other objects in the space did not revolve around the Earth, instead the Sun was the center of our 'solar' system. The problem with Evolution is that it explains that the Universe had been active, and there had been life way before humans even showed up-- meaning everything was not created for just us, and that even though everything that has beginning must have an ending, humans might all die but it might not be the actual end of time for the entire Universe- with all the other planets, solar systems, and galaxies out there. I wonder if they even teach Astronomy in these "special" universities. How do Creationists explain mixed-breed dogs and other animals- are those not examples of selecting certain traits to breed? So what's to say nature can't do it on its own?

      If and when we discover life on other planets, even if its some type simple cellular organism or fish, then these Creationists might need to explain whether those animals get to go to Heaven. If they want to take the old books literally, then explain why if God made us in His own image that He would make life on another planet? For our consumption and make pets out of? God could have made us in his own image, but that could breakdown to the matter of space. You can believe in God and understand the facts of Evolution, through the theory of Intelligent Design. The idea is that nature had a helping through out the steps of Evolution. This is more of a spiritual understanding of the universe, though the Pope publicly accepted Intelligent Design over Creationism on October 22, 1996. It seems a portion U.S. citizens that take up belief in Creationism are unaware of the alternative, which would allow them to keep their faith, without constricting their ability to learn about the Universe we live in.

    • I just cannot believe a story that was written by a man thousands of years ago, that has been alterd by the "leaders" through out history. It is still altered today, compare a Catholic bible from the 1800s to a bible of today.
      You'll notice different books missing, and sentences have been altered.

      well i guess god isn't real because he can do tons of other shit (create the world in a week, flood it, turn people into pillars of salt, destroy towns, create all things in his image and likeness....) and he cant communicate effectively? he is a failure of a god or he isn't there, i'm guessing he isn't there.       LOL- I have to agree but it's probably because my earliest exposure to the german language was seeing videos of hitler giving his overzealous speeches... that created a negative association with german language.

      OK I can accept that. but let me ask you this: if love = god living in you and hate = the devil living in you.....why can't you just believe that love exists, and hate exists, and leave it at that? there's no need for gods or devils if we just understand that love and hate are innate in the human mind.

      I think he would be more obvious about it.. In all truth I'm a deist. I don't believe when someone comes to me and says "God told me this is wrong." Yes there are a lot of things in religion that are obvious, for instance killing, stealing, and lying are bad. But there is a lot written, in all religions out there, because of the opinion of the writer. Just look at the Quran.

      The "true" religion distinguishable? ROFL! There are many religions in the world with many millions of followers just as convinced as you are that their particular pet religion is the "true" religion.

      Which one is the right one? None of them is real, they are all just myths people believe. Your're an atheist just like me ibrake, I just believe in one LESS religion than you do.
