Against the juggernaut that is HBO, Showtime, premiere cable’s perpetual Avis, has always had to try harder. Of late it has cast much of its lot with troubled and/or flawed women. Oh, certainly, there are troubled and or flawed men, too, authors (“Californication”) for example, and troubled kings (“The Tudors”). But mostly its troubled women, two of whom return tonight:
First, there’s “Nurse Jackie” a dark comedy starring Edie Falco followed by Tara Gregson (Toni Collette) in “The United States of Tara” (review here).
Jackie Peyton is a senior trauma nurse at All Saint’s Hospital in New York City. She’s a knowledgeable, take-no-prisoners-or-BS manager who looks out for her patients and her subordinates. She’ll take on insurance companies and doctors who don’t show her colleagues the proper respect.
Jackie’s also a loving wife and mother, and it’s hard not to root for her despite some minor problems.
