May 20: Everybody Draw Mohammed Day

Image

The paintbrush/pen/pencil/crayon is mightier than the sword. Or hey, even needlepoint if you're up for it. The possibilities are endless. "Seattle cartoonist launches 'Everybody Draw Mohammed Day'," by Jamie Griswold for the Associated Press, April 23:

After Comedy Central cut a portion of a South Park episode following a death threat from a radical Muslim group, Seattle cartoonist Molly Norris wanted to counter the fear. She has declared May 20th "Everybody Draw Mohammed Day."

Norris told KIRO Radio's Dave Ross that cartoonists are meant to challenge the lines of political correctness. "That's a cartoonist's job, to be non-PC."

Producers of South Park said Thursday that Comedy Central removed a speech about intimidation and fear from their show after a radical Muslim group warned that they could be killed for insulting the Prophet Muhammad.

The group said it wasn't threatening South Park producers Trey Parker and Matt Stone, but it included a gruesome picture of Theo Van Gogh, a Dutch filmmaker killed by a Muslim extremist in 2004, and said the producers could meet the same fate. The website posted the addresses of Comedy Central's New York office and the California production studio where South Park is made.

"As a cartoonist I just felt so much passion about what had happened I wanted to kind of counter Comedy Central's message they sent about feeling afraid," Norris said.

Norris has asked other artists to submit drawings of any religious figure to be posted as part of Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor (CACAH) on May 20th.

But drawings of one "religious figure" in particular will provoke death threats and accusations of hatred and racism.

On her website Norris explains this is not meant to disrespect any religion, but rather meant to protect people's right to express themselves.

    • It has always been such an amazing admission of lack of power of prophets and deities that they can be so easily offended by a depiction or the use of its name in vain. It is such stupidity on so many levels and totally betrays the insecurity of any belief system. It just amazes me that anyone would subscribe to such a silly notion without questioning why.

1-we have highways that connect the entire country aswell without having topple an entire civilization.
2-im pretty sure contemperary germanic success is a result of us and the soviets being as thier entire society was rebuilt from the ground up by us.nazism dragged them lower then any other entity in thier history
3-i have not even a clue as to how the vatican wich existed before and after them would be a result of nazism
4-everything good (im assuming you nean technological advances) was a result of massive war not nazis it could have just as easily been a result of any country threatening another.nazis, communists, monarchists, socialists, and democrats have equal claim to this.
5-the holocaust sadly isnt a new bar, its been happening to people for as long as civilization has existed, and i dont believe human beings behaiving at thier lowest capabilities is a good thing.the good thing is the survivors (for once) making a point to learn from it.

      3) muslini handed over the land to the church during the war to overlook the mass murder thing the Vatican as a state didn't exist before then
      4) Germans did it best
      5) that's more the point that I was looking for there will never be a war of such scale again

1-i guess i just cant see the auto bahn so much as nazi progress as germans using paved roads (as all modern civilizations do)
2-and the nazi reaction was to the jewish question so why not say the jews created these benefits or the romans,or persians,or assyrians,or babylonians did by exiling the jews from israel to europe?
3-rome throughout the majority of the last two thousand years was recognized the world over as the home of the vatican/catholic church.for a short while it was france but other than that rome was catholacisms home.its like saying the kkk was good cuz they protected the cotton industry.
4-have you been watching too many sham wow commercials?yes the germans make great stuff but in the end the germans didnt do it the best or they would have won.we did it the best.we split the atom.it was our technology that overcame the panzer tank technology the germans stole from the cheks.our flying fortresses defeated were superior to thier luftwaffa.the japanese gave us a harder time then the germans did.
5-you are right thier will never be a war on a battlefield like that again cuz we all have weapons that make such warfare mute but thier will be(and is)war greater than that happening now.
israeli-palastinian conflict going on for over 60 yrs now whos death toll has accualy exceeded the nazis

oh i hope you aren't comparing Nazi's to Muslims.... the two are so damn far apart its not even funny.

and i agree with sidewaysclyde. i dont agree with everything that Islam does, but i will respect their religion, because i know what the religion is truly about. and to blatantly disregard and disrespect an entire religion because of the actions of so few is ludicrous.

now i will agree the things "some" Muslims do is bad, but lets not attack or blame a religion for the actions of man. blame the men and women who make those bad choices, what happened to people taking responsibility for their own actions?.. even if they do it in the name of Islam, Islam is a religion of peace and preservation of life. but "MAN"(women included) takes the teachings within the book out of context and uses the words as an reason or excuse for their actions, as is the same with just about every religion or anything... where ever theres a good thing, there will always be those who will take advantage of it.

true Muslims hate these people who take their religion out of context and use it for their own purpose. so dont attack the religion... how about you attack the people "responsible" instead.

The Koran is like Mein Kampf....full of hatred and violence towards Jews mainly. It is a disgusting book. Hitler and the Nazis admired the cruelty of Islam and Al Husseini, the Mufti of Jerusalem and leader of the 'palestinians and uncle of Arafart, was a close associate of the Nazis, a friend of Eichmann's and one of the architects of the Holocaust. Arab countries welcomed Nazi war criminals who helped build Egypt's, Syria's and Jordan's military with the purpose of annihilating the jews in Israel. So don't give me this bullshit that islam is a religion of peace. It is a fascist, totalitarian supremacist ideology and a vile mix of racism, jew hatred, misogyny and homophobia. It is evil.

A Muslim dies and finds himself before the Pearly Gates.

He is very excited, as all his life he has longed to meet the Prophet Muhammad. Having arrived at the Gates of Heaven, he meets a man with a beard.

      'Are you Muhammad?' he asks.

'No, my son. I am Peter. Muhammad is higher up.

And he points to a ladder that rises into the clouds.

Delighted that Muhammad should be higher than Peter.

he climbs the ladder in great strides,

climbs through the clouds coming to a room where he meets another bearded man.

He asks again, 'Are you Muhammad?

'No, I am Moses. Muhammad is higher still.

Exhausted, but with a heart full of joy.

he continues to climb the ladder and, yet again,

he discovers an even larger room

where he meets another man with a beard.

Full of hope, he asks again, 'Are you Muhammad?

'No, I am Jesus...You will find Muhammad higher up.

Muhammad higher than Jesus! The poor man can hardly contain his delight and climbs and climbs, ever higher. Once again, he reaches a larger room where he meets a man with a beard and repeats his question:

      'Are you Muhammad?' he gasps,

as he is, by now, totally out of breath from all his climbing.

'No, my son...I am God. But you look exhausted.

      Would you like a coffee?'

      'Yes, please, my Lord'

God looks behind him, claps his hands and calls out:

      'Hey, Muhammad, two coffees!'

please dont try to school me on my own religion. i may still be learning, but i know good n damn well who is who and whats going on.

just a quick question... whats your religion? if you have one... by your name im thinking Judaism, but i could just be mistaken in my assumption.

Then you are sadly misinformed like the rest of Babylon. Christianity is not what you think it is. Your doctrine is based on the Holy Roman Empire's creation of the New Testament. This was an aberration of the truth as given by Jesus.

If you doubt who Jehovah really is, then you need to read about who he is in Jesus own words...read John Chapter 8...Jesus clearly tells the Jewish leaders that the God whose law they have been following is the Devil. Devil means "one who opposes God."

      The Children of the Devil
42Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. 43Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. 45Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! 46Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? 47He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God."

    • "To make enemies by unnecessary and willful incivility, is just as insane a proceeding as to set your house on fire. " - Shopenhauer

While I agree that any person ought to be able to draw or do what they want, it doesn't always mean they should. As an American visiting a Muslim country (Saudi Arabia) I find it disturbing and scary that people willfully go out their way to try to enrage Muslims. What if Americans or other innocents are killed in riots or from misplaced anti-American rage as a result of your actions, actions you commited designed to anger?

A wise man, upon finding out I was not Muslim, told my Islamic friend, "The way to convert him [to Islam] is not through books or speech, but through actions." I think this goes both ways. If you really want Muslims to stop hating America or even give up Islam all together, you have to show them what a peacful and accepting country America is. Antagonizing Muslims for no reason is not helping.

and you dont understand Humans. Humans in general want happiness, and a long life. people will give up things they lived their whole life with just to attain those things(life and happiness). to say that someone wont give up their religion because of the history of that religion just means you dont know humans.

a religion is nothing without humans, but humans are still humans without religion. Many times humans are happier without the religion than they were with it, and vice versa.

look ultimately it all comes down to people being responsible for their own actions, because i dont see every Muslim bombing buildings and threatening to kill people. many right now are at work, or taking care of their business without doing any harm to anyone else, just living a peaceful happy life(as much as they can).

"The only thing we have to fear..." An update on this story. "Cartoonist Molly Norris Erases 'Draw Muhammad' Gag," from MyFox9, April 26 :

(CANVAS STAFF REPORTS) - In more fallout around the decision by Comedy Central to censor an episode of "South Park" that contained comedic depictions of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a cartoonist has now censored herself .

Seattle artist Molly Norris originally posted on her website a cartoon showing many different objects - including a purse, a domino, a coffee cup and a spool of thread - claiming to be a likeness of Muhammad.

Norris said that May 20 would be the first annual "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" and created a fictional group, Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor, to sponsor the event. She dedicated the illustration to Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the creators of "South Park."

She sent the illustration to some bloggers and talked to a local radio host, saying "it's a cartoonist's job to be non-PC."

Now Norris has backed off from that position. She no longer has the illustration on her website and she claims responses to the idea were overwhelming. Instead she has a drawing of herself, with various word balloons containing her feelings about the incident, including "I said that I wanted to counter fear and then I got afraid."

Too late: the paints and brushes await:

But she may have started something she can't stop. Others have taken up the cause of "Everybody Draw Muhammed Day."

Reason.com's blogger Michael C. Moynihan says he will be contributing artwork and will post fans' work on his site as well. The fictional group Citizens Against Citizens Against Humor now has its own site that already contains some irreverent illustrations of Muhammad.

A Facebook page devoted to "Draw Muhammad Day" has followed Norris's lead and backed away from the idea, but fans on the site are still arguing about it.

A rival Facebook page, Ban Draw Muhammad Day , also contains ongoing arguments on both sides of the issue.

On Sunday night's episode of "The Simpsons", the "South Park" issue was mentioned in the opening credits when Bart writes on the chalkboard in school. The chalkboard scrawl reads: "South Park - We'd stand beside you if we weren't so scared."

In the words of Homer himself: "[You] found my one weakness: that I'm weak! "

    • Abu al-Zarqawi died and George Washington met him at the Pearly Gates. He slapped him across the face and yelled, "How dare you try to destroy the nation I helped conceive!" Patrick Henry approached, punched him in the nose and shouted, "You wanted to end our liberties but you failed!" James Madison followed, kicked him in the groin and said, "This is why I allowed our government to provide for the common defense!" Thomas Jefferson was next, beat al-Zarqawi with a long cane and snarled "It was Evil men like you who inspired me to write the Declaration of Independence ." The beatings and thrashings continued as George Mason, James Monroe and 66 other early Americans unleashed their anger on the terrorist Leader. As al-Zarqawi lay bleeding and in pain, an Angel appeared. Al- Zarqawi wept and said, "This is not what you promised me." The Angel replied, "I told you there would be 72 Virginians waiting for you in Heaven. What did you think I said?

To quote from the article : "On her website Norris explains this is not meant to disrespect any religion, but rather meant to protect people's right to express themselves." Sadly, the artist is not only expressing their viewpoint, but they are also completely disrespecting a particular religion and then calling it art.

People from all over the world has made cartoons and or characters bashing on religion, political figures, sex, war and about a zillion other things yet this is the best the radical muslims can come up with is to threat the creators of south park and also anyone who tries to poke at or make fun of a religion or culture. I understand and respect culture but its just a cartoon character or tv show lighten up a bit.

You say that islam respects other religions? Bullshit and lies. here's why:

Qur'an 9:71 "O Prophet, strive hard [fighting] against the unbelievers and the Hypocrites, and be harsh with them. Their abode is Hell, an evil refuge indeed."
Qur'an 8:59 "The infidels should not think that they can get away from us. Prepare against them whatever arms and weaponry you can muster so that you may terrorize them."
Qur'an 4:168 "Those who reject [Islamic] Faith, Allah will not forgive them nor guide them to any path except the way to Hell, to dwell therein forever. And this to Allah is easy."
Qur'an 4:114 "He who disobeys the Apostle after guidance has been revealed will burn in Hell."
Ishaq:344 "We smote them and they scattered. The impious met death. They became fuel for Hell. All who aren't Muslims must go there. It will consume them while the Stoker [Allah] increases the heat. They had called Allah's Apostle a liar. They claimed, 'You are nothing but a sorcerer.' So Allah destroyed them."
Qur'an 33:60 "Truly, if the Hypocrites stir up sedition, if the agitators in the City do not desist, We shall urge you to go against them and set you over them. They shall have a curse on them. Whenever they are found, they shall be seized and slain without mercy - a fierce slaughter - murdered, a horrible murdering."
Qur'an 33:64 "Verily Allah has cursed the Unbelievers [whom he defines as Christians in the 5th surah] and has prepared for them a Blazing Fire to dwell in forever. No protector will they find, nor savior. That Day their faces will be turned upside down in the Fire. They will say: 'Woe to us! We should have obeyed Allah and obeyed the Messenger!' 'Our Lord! Give them double torment and curse them with a very great Curse!'"
Qur'an 5:10 "Those who reject, disbelieve and deny Our signs, proofs and verses will be companions of Hell-Fire."
Qur'an 88:1 "Has the narration reached you of the overwhelming (calamity)? Some faces (all disbelievers, Jews and Christians) that Day, will be humiliated, downcast, scorched by the burning fire, while they are made to drink from a boiling hot spring."

The Mufti of Jerusalem, Al Husseni: “The Arabs were Germany’s natural friends… They were therefore prepared to cooperate with Germany with all their hearts and stood ready to participate in a war, not only negatively by the commission of acts of sabotage and the instigation of revolutions, but also positively by the formation of an Arab Legion. In this struggle, the Arabs were striving for the independence and the unity of Palestine, Syria and Iraq….
Hitler: “Germany was resolved, step by step, to ask one European nation after the other to solve its Jewish problem, and at the proper time direct a similar appeal to non-European nations as well. Hitler. Germany’s objective would then be solely the destruction of the Jewish element residing in the Arab sphere under the protection of British power. The moment that Germany’s tank divisions and air squadrons had made their appearance south of the Caucasus, the public appeal requested by the Grand Mufti could go out to the Arab world.”

It is fair to conclude that the official leader of the Muslims in Palestine, Haj Amin al-Husseini, was a full fledged Nazi war criminal and he was so declared at Nuremberg and sought by Yugoslavia as a war criminal after the war. He escaped to Egypt where he was given asylum and helped to organize many former Nazis and Nazi sympathizers against Israel.
It is also fair to say that Husseini’s pro-Nazi sympathies and support were widespread among his Palestinian followers, who regarded him as a hero even after the war and the disclosure of his role in Nazi atrocities.

Muslims were not and are not inspired by Hitler and the Nazis. Hitler and the Nazis were inspired by Islam – just as modern-day Muslims hate Jews because the Qur’an and Islam tell them to. Islamic scholar Robert Spencer explains:

There is a strong native strain of anti-Semitism in Islam, which is rooted in the Qur’an. The Muslim holy book contains a great deal of material that forms the foundation for a hatred of Jews that has perdured throughout Islamic history. It is virulent and hard to eradicate. The Qur’an portrays the Jews as the craftiest, most persistent, and most implacable enemies of the Muslims — and there is no Islamic authority that has moved to mitigate the most destructive interpretations of all this. The Qur’anic material on the Jews remains the prism through which far too many Muslims see the Israeli-Palestinian conflict–and Jews in general–to this day.

The Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin al-Husseini, was the Muslim Hitler. He continually coaxed, urged, and demanded Jewish annihilation. And it was not that he got with the Nazi program: he preceded it. He mentored it. His role is irrefutable, and is documented in thousands of pages of documents released after the war.

The Mufti, whom his nephew Yasser Arafat called “our hero,” was famous for his fanatical Jew-hatred. During World War II, he lived in Berlin, where he met Hitler and traveled in top Nazi circles (he even stayed in Hitler’s bunker toward the end of the war). Among his close friends was Adolf Eichmann, who is sometimes described as the “architect” of the Holocaust.

did lower ranking nazis find safe havens in the middle east of course, but that makes them no more nazi than the south american rat line countries. extradition policy is independant of these things.

It does seem that within the Muslim community, one who disgraces the Muslim family can be punished with the loss of their life. . . kind of puts a whole different twist on the meaning of family values. . . you think?

That was great. No one is exempt from humor.
No one is exempt from being made fun of at some point in their life.
What is really sad is that Comedy Central felt the need to censor South Park because of the violence it may invoke.
The radicals win, when people hide behind their doors, fearful of all they say and do.

    • Actually "free speech" is never entirely free, it is ALWAYS mediated, there are always compromises. There are many things you just can't do and say. All they're doing here is deliberitely offending a group that gets VERY dangerous when offended for no point other than to offend them. This isn't about freedom of expression because they don't even understand the concept.

    • If the large majority of Humans could get past wondering what Jesus...
Mohammed...(insert your favorite here).......and all other historical religious leaders looked like...
then the realization that they all espoused the same beautiful message
      could grab a tiny foothold...
why worship the messenger and the ground they walked on....good thing they did not travel far....worship the message....Universal Truth.....so on May 20...
or today.....imagine and then draw Peace....Love....Understanding and Compassion....something you would see in the eyes of anyone that has ever tried to pass on the Universal Truths to any one else on this Planet or any other Planet..
something so many have seen and known while so many others have never
      been lucky enough to Experience....
Golden Ruler...part of all Religions.....Johnnie Hargrave

What on earth does this rant - obviously written by JJammer whose obnoxious behaviour here was so tiresome to all - have to do with the topic of this submission and thread?

its just the internet is said as way of saying its informations relevance is subject to its author. just as the world is filled with people ranging from genius to jackass the internet is a place where that range of ideas are expressed.
      just as any tv network
      radio station or
      literary publisher
any website such as current has a right and a responsability to create and institute its own standards by wich it functions. if ya dont like it dont use it.bitching here about it is like protesting wallmart all day but taking your lunch break at thier deli counter.if you ceased using current and you are correct and they are a facist entity they will disolve as no one else will use them either.but aslong as you play along your just spouting to no end. y not create an open news source thats better than this?
why not read the terms of service before clicking on the accept box?
why not adhere to the terms of service when using someone elses service?
i dont like it either but its not my domain, and until i create one i no one else have forced me to tolerate currents rules.

out of a world filled with terrorist organizations, white power groups, and all other sorts of zealots proliferating bold faced lies on the internet you find the missinformation on current worthy of crusading against?
