The creators of the Simpsons often use the chalkboard scene that opens the show's opening sequence to poke jokes or make subtle political commentary.
This week's US episode opened with what could be argued a simple show of support.
"SOUTH PARK - WE'D STAND BESIDE YOU IF WE WEREN'T SO SCARED"

People claim to see the image of Jesus in random inanimate objects everyday, like the grilled cheese lady for example. What happens if a person claims to see the image of Muhammad on say a Pop-Tart? Do the radical Muslims have to kill the finder or the factory that made the Pop-Tart in question?

I sent an email to that radical muslim site responsible for the threats. I told them that people like them, whether Christian or Muslim, are what's wrong with this world. I said that all they do is incite violence and hatred, and that their views are barbaric.

Abu al-Zarqawi died and George Washington met him at the Pearly Gates. He slapped him across the face and yelled, "How dare you try to destroy the nation I helped conceive!" Patrick Henry approached, punched him in the nose and shouted, "You wanted to end our liberties but you failed!" James Madison followed, kicked him in the groin and said, "This is why I allowed our government to provide for the common defense!" Thomas Jefferson was next, beat al-Zarqawi with a long cane and snarled "It was Evil men like you who inspired me to write the Declaration of Independence ." The beatings and thrashings continued as George Mason, James Monroe and 66 other early Americans unleashed their anger on the terrorist Leader. As al-Zarqawi lay bleeding and in pain, an Angel appeared. Al- Zarqawi wept and said, "This is not what you promised me." The Angel replied, "I told you there would be 72 Virginians waiting for you in Heaven. What did you think I said?

I love the irony of Current recently.
There is a post about how Obama is a socialist because he knows the CEO of Acorn or maybe signed an autograph for her somewhere along the way--which is taken super seriously and posters started fighting over how socialism is the root of all evil and capitalism is the economic savior--and then there's a post about some creepy 40 year game show host from the 70's and 80's kissing little girls and everybody is all about oh well that was the times man, no big deal, or well since the parents and audiences didn't object then maybe they might suddenly decide to object now...and now this post which the Simpson's creators meant as pure sarcasm and irony--and by the way Matt and Trey meant their depiction of Muhammad to be taken that way as well--since it was in their 200th episode and they pretty much have insulted every possible group within that 200 episode run--and once again posters are on here calling each other names over who has the "bigger" right to free speech.

We are AMERICANS of the United States and have never bowed to threats or overwhelming forces. As a people with no standing army we came together to defeat the first superpower, England, when she threatened our liberties; we came together to save the world from the agressors of both world wars. We have stood strong for hundreds of years, together.
because of our ideals and belief in inalienable rights bestowed by our GOD, we have overcome all odds to become the world's only superpower.
muslim extremists are scorned even by the true believers of Islam. as once said by one of our leaders, 'the only thing we have to fear, is fear itself!"
let us unite, in control of our fears and stand together to laugh in the face of those who wish us harm.
be strong comedy central, if it must be so, we shall make our last stand in SOUTH PARK!

Just to be clear- this isn't about free speech.
This is about South Park creating controversy by basically poking a stick at a mad dog behind a fence. In what way is it honorable to risk your life and the lives of others by making fun of a religion? What is to be gained, what progress is being made by antagonizing Islam?
Now, if the episode exposed the injustices and inhumanities of some Islamic nations, that would be something to stand behind and defend. But, this is just media whoring.

I wrote a long post about how the censoring made it about freedom of speech. i also wrote about how the episode touched on how we shouldn't be intimidated by and we should stand up against them when they use fear tactics to submit us into what they want us to do. I wrote about how south park knows no boundaries and they make fun of everyone equally, until now.
You asked if this episode exposed the injustices and inhumanities of some islamic nations, that would be something to stand behind and defend. Freedom of speech, People using scare tactics and death threats and bomb threats to get their way, "Terrorism" isn't worth standing for?
All I thought in the end was this, Do you even watch South Park or do you have a blinded opinion on it because it made fun of something you care dearly about.
I made an account just to address your ignorant attempt at bashing south park. I don't watch south park that often, so I wouldn't call myself a fanboy. What I would say is that the creators south park have every single right to express themselves.

First of all, Freedom of Speech rights do not apply to private industries. Comedy Central has a legal right to censor anything they want. Ultimately, they're just a corporation whose bottom line is making money. If content they are airing is causing death threats, that's a liability for them. So from a legal standpoint, their completely justified in censoring the episode if they choose to.
Secondly, all Trey and Matt are doing is making fun of Islam. It's nothing constructive. They aren't championing any cause worth fighting for.
Let me make an analogy. Imagine South Park wanted to make fun of Black slavery. The episode would have rape, whippings, hangings, all of those horrible things, just for the purpose of laughing at them. This cartoon would be rejected and denounced by most Americans- because making fun of Black slavery is taboo in the mainstream media- it's off limits. Just like images of Mohamed are off limits in some Muslim communities. Should we make fun of Black Slavery just because free speech allows us to? Of course not, some things, you just don't make fun of because it's in incredibly bad taste.
Sorry to be a buzz kill, but there are a lot of people who are just romanticizing this issue. South Park probably has some of the best social commentary of TV, but they also have a habit of causing controversy purely for the sake of controversy.

i think you miss the point entirely. freedom of speech IS listening to the shit that is shit just to be shit... YOU! as a viewer have the option of turning to any of the other 500 channels to watch something else if its offensive.
the fact that anyone could FORCE a person to hold back on their own speech is in affect an infringement to that individuals freedom of speech... especially when that pressure comes from an organization completely based on the censorship of things for reasons no one cares about any more... except parents that dont watch what their kids do...its not like i(or most of you) didnt understand anything they said until the last 5 minute long beep...
it reinforces the profanity attached to a word, or any negative connotation... when a word (or image) becomes taboo... its ridiculous.nigger is another one of those things
like you say... slavery runs deep... but we dont always censor it. - 2 years ago

I don't think it's worth deeply offending someone just because you want to exercise your right to free speech purely for the sake of exercising it.
It's difficult for a lot of people to understand, but images of Mohamed are extremely offensive to some Muslims. If something is extremely offensive to someone else, yet not really important to you, why would you go there? It's just a joke to Trey and Matt, but it's a religion to a lot of Muslims. OK, so they're defending their right to free speech, but free speech to what? To offend people for the sake of making a joke? And not just offend, but religiously offend people to the point to where they send death threats. And this is all just for a joke. Of course, they're entitled to their right to free speech, but they're using it for a pretty stupid reason- to offend people. There's nothing heroic or noble about what they're doing.
And for the record, Trey and Matt didn't have any of their free speech rights infringed upon. Comedy Central is a private corporation, they can legally censor anything they want. Now, if the government were to censor that episode, that would be a problem.

When there is a history of allowing South Park to go where they wanted to go, to censor NOW (and over what they did) is disingenuous and disappointing, to say the least. Do you think there were Catholics that were "deeply offended" over the "bleeding out her butt Virgin Mary" episode a few seasons back? I'll bet there were, but none of them tried to bully Comedy Central into censoring the episode.
As a people, we should not be cowed by a religious belief, especially someone else's. If Muslims are offended by an image of Mohammad, then they shouldn't tune in. Our right to free speech is not dictated by someone's morality or how someone "feels" about what is being said. In the United States, I can say that the pope is a Nazi who approved of, and perhaps encouraged, pedophilia. That may or may not be an outrageous statement and there may or may not be consequences for saying it, but I can still say it.
It seems as though from your posts that you would prefer that no one even ATTEMPT saying anything that "might" offend someone else or especially someone's religious beliefs or exercising their free speech right for a "stupid reason". You don't get to make those judgments -- of course, you can react to someone's speech; my reaction to Comedy Central's censorship is to stop watching their channel until I hear that episode 201 has been rebroadcast as uncensored as it was meant to be and I wrote them and told them that. Unimportant in the entire scheme of things as they are, those are MY consequences to Comedy Central for their censorship of South Park's right to free speech. Going with your argument that Comedy Central is a corporation and react only to their bottom line, I guess if enough people do that, the episode will be rebroadcast, but I doubt it.
The biggest issue in this is that Comedy Central didn't censor due to money or offensiveness, they did it due to fear and intimidation of a fringe group that also has their right to free speech. I think it's unfortunate that this group has their right to free speech and I'm offended by their tactics in their use of it, but that's too bad, they still do. Again, free speech is free speech.

(and nothing happened)and that in many episodes he appears in the opening credits.
also that they gave him the ability to control fire.
any joke on any subject, is a joke, and should be treated as such... either you laugh or say its not funny. but you dont go and say you have no right to say such things because these people dont like it.
(i know jews dont like it every time i ask them how many jews can fit in a VW bug.
but they still laugh and the horrible answer i give them..
and some dont, and i apologize if it offends and let them know its just a joke.)when thousands have been mad for similar reasons before, the only difference is that this time, the idiots want to use bombs... and you say that matt and trey are the bad guys?
religion based in peace somehow leads to killing others who dont believe in what you believe for words and pictures... in a similar style to any other subject matter that has been made fun of.

it's actually about how the American public is being scared into giving up their right to free speech through death threats from Islamic extremists. In this country I have the right to free speech and when someone threatens me for being me then I'm going to fight back and hit them with what they hate the most to make my point that they CANNOT control my actions through fear. South Park pushes the limits of what we define as acceptable in culture, always has. But its either ok to make fun of everyone or you can't make fun of anyone at all.

@steve, dare, reed, sokka
This doesn't have anything to do with free speech. Matt and Trey have all the free speech they want. It's completely within their rights to make fun of Mohamed.
However, this is about Comedy Central not wanting to be involved with Trey and Matt inciting death threats over a joke- which is completely understandable.Imagine you're at a restaurant with a business associate. Your associate starts loudly insulting the Muslims sitting next to you. It's really funny, but it's getting them agitated and it looks like they want to fight. Now, it's completely within your associates rights to make fun of these guys, but it's also completely understandable if you want to just leave the restaurant- why get into a fight over a stupid joke?
That's basically what Comedy Central is doing. It's reasonable to assume that the death threats would start getting sent directly to Comedy Central as well. They'd rather not get into death threats over a joke. What's the point, what's to be gained? Suppose Trey and Matt get blown up over this. Would it be worth it? Or worse, say a Comedy Central mailboy gets blown up over this. There's a difference between defending free speech and just being needlessly reckless. That's why I don't blame Comedy Central.

I don't see Christians terrorizing people for blasphemy against their religion. Of course they already have murdered hundreds of millions in the name of Jesus already.
